Hotel Review - La Pirogue, A Sun Resort

La Pirogue, A Sun Resort is a much liked 4-star resort on the west coast of Mauritius. The resort is over 40 years old (don’t worry it has been recently renovated) and still going strong. This is my hotel review of La Pirogue.

Location

Situated along the white sand Flic en Flac Beach, La Pirogue is located just 4 km from Casela Bird Park and from Tamarina Golf Club. Cascavelle Shopping Mall is 5 km away and SSR International Airport is 50 km away.

Airport to La Pirogue

Hotel Overview

The resort resembles a traditional fishing village with each bungalow?s thatched roof reminiscent of the unfurled sail of a local fishing boat, from which the resort derives its name. It is set amongst a coconut grove and surrounded by lush gardens, this boho-chic hotel boasts a relaxed atmosphere that is still vibrant?perfect for both families and couples alike.

The resort does provide a shuttle service from the airport, however if you have rented a car there is free parking available.

There are separate swimming pools for kids and adults if you do not fancy the sea. Personally, I find swimming pools at beach resorts redundant as the whole point of staying near a beach is to swim or play in the sea.

For those who still want to maintain their fitness regime while on holiday, you have access to a Fitness center and a personal trainer. For those looking for a more laid-back approach, there are yoga classes (free) and massages (additional charges) you can go for.

Kids’ have both an outdoor and indoor play area to choose from. They also have access to books, DVDs, music and board games/puzzles. If the dad and mum want some alone time, there is babysitting/child services which has an additional charge.

For an additional cost, families are go snorkelling, diving, windsurfing, fishing or rent bicycles and visit nearby places.

Wifi is available everywhere around the resort.

The hotel does not allow any pets, so if you were considering on bringing yours, don’t!

Staff

The staff are helpful and friendly and speak both English & French. However, maybe due to the laid back approach of the resort & culture, some staff may come across as less attentive or unprofessional when compared to other international hotels in big cities. Just be patient and roll with it, afterall you are on holiday.

The Rooms

The resort has 248 rooms and they are all on the ground floor. Every room is in a lovely detached or semi-detached hatched roof bungalow and all  have a small private patio and overlook an amazing coconut grove. You can choose to either have the Indian Ocean in the background (what a view) or have closer access to the beach.

You have a few options when it comes to room types:

Premium Garden Bungalow

Dining and Service

They have 6 restaurants and bar outlets to choose from. Their main restaurant is The Wolmar, where they serve buffet breakfast and a different themed buffet in the evening. Once a week they do Mauritian buffet with BBQ in the gardens. Other restaurants are Van Der Stel Wine Bar, The Medine Bar, Le Morne Beach Bar, Magenta Seafood Restaurant and the Coconut Caf?. Guests from La Pirogue also have access to the restaurants located at the sister hotel, The Sugar Beach.

The Coconut Cafe at La Pirogue, A Sun Resort

Just a word of caution, the beverages are expensive at the restaurants. For example, the price for a local beer is 6 times the price in comparison to supermarket.

Also at the buffet, there is a lack of food for kids. Hotels of this standard usually have a kids corner where little ones have a selection of non-spicy food this is not the case. You may have to ask the staff to make something spiceless for the kids.

Please try and avoid Sugar Beach restaurant. Unfortunately, the service from the staff is terrible. They take a very long time to serve you and they clean your table as soon as you leave it, even if it is to go to the buffet for a second round!!

Overall, the food and drinks are truly excellent, from the coffee and freshly made pastries and pancakes at breakfast, to the local rum, to the main courses of the hot meals at most of the restaurants.

My Recommendation

Overall, this is a top of the line hotel in a beautiful location with some excellent facilities for kids. You will not find any resort that is perfect, but La Pirogue gets as close as possible to perfection with its rooms, its activities and its dinning.

If you are looking for that beach get away in paradise then this is the resort for you.

  1. Oooh I’ve always dreamed of going to Mauritius. The hotel sounds amazing, I love the idea of individual bungalows. I get people who prefer the sea if its there, but with kids a swimming pool is safer, its a smaller area to watch them. I also love it that they are so kid friendly, I have been to so many hotels which have nothing for kids and it makes it really hard to keep my kids occupied.

The place looks a dream! My main concern when I go to a hotel is the cleanliness, how clean is the hotel?

    • Hi Hollie,

Personally I like my hotels to be clean like hospital operating rooms but we rarely get that! This is clean as can be! It next to the beach so there maybe sand around the place thats blown in but in that case I recommend you close the doors and windows if it gets too windy…other than that the place is clean

  2. I like this hotel because of it’s thatched roof, gives a feel of the tropical Island. Good to know that is it kid friendly in terms of accommodation though you have mentioned they have not put into consideration kid friendly food. I have noted in most beach areas, the staff in beach resorts always have a laid back attitude and are never in a hurry even to serve you. I think this is something travelers should embrace.

    • Hi Anita,

I agree…most beach resorts tend to have a laid back attitude but it shouldnt affect the professionalism of the staff - after all they are not on holiday!

We should be tolerant to it but there is only so long a parent can wait before the child gets cranky cos they havent got any food.

  3. Great post and great info.

This hotel looks beautiful, and it isn’t so expensive for what it offers.

I love blue beaches, and this view is awesome, I see that Mauritius is a very nice island to go to, so I will discuss this with my wife, and I hope i can convince her to go.

Thanks a lot for sharing this, I really want to go.

  6. It is a pretty decent place to spend holiday with loved ones and even with friends. Whenever I intend on going on a holiday or vacation, there are somethings I must check off my list as being present on the place I intend to go to and it does seem that they are all present at the La Pirogue, A Sun Resort.

If I intend on going with my family then the place has to be kids friendly and it does seem that it is. It is pretty awesome and would put this into my list of places to visit.

I love the resemblance with a traditional fishing village with each bungalow’s thatched roof reminiscent of the unfurled sail of a local fishing boat. Sea has always brought good memories.

The pictures and review of this resort anticipate a wonderful family time for vacations! Facilities for kids make this resort an excellent choice.

  9. This is a great review Tarun!Your vivid description of the hotel, helps one in picturing the whole scene not to talk of the wonderful clear pictures. I particularly paid attention to their provisions for kids and must say that it is superb. The outdoor and indoor play areas for kids to choose from and having access to games/puzzles is enough conviction that my kids will love the place. And to cap it all, there is swimming pools for the kids and babysitting/child services just in case the needs arises.I am already thinking of vacating in this great hotel.

  10. Hi Tarun,

This is a learning experience for me, I have never heard of this paradise location before. The white sandy beaches look beautiful. Is this located on an Island in the Indian Ocean? I will definitely put this on my bucket list to visit. Thank you for the notice of the rude service at the Sugar Beach restaurant!

The 248 room resort sounds like the hotel is almost a small community. I sometime like to hit the pool around the beach, I eventually tire of battling with the waves! it is also nice to know that up to 2 Children, 12yrs old can stay free of charge. Is there any extra charge for additional bedding for the 12yr olds? My daughters will certainly be interested!

Thank you Tarun, I will have to come back soon to read more.

    • Hi Chas,

yes, Mauritius is located in the india ocean close to Africa.

Hopefully, by the time you get there the service would have improved at the Sugar beach.

The maximum number of children allowed in existing beds depends on the room you pick. Double-check your selected room for the maximum capacity. Unfortunately, No extra beds are available at the hotel.

Children above the age of 12 are charged $137 per which is not calculated in the price at booking. It will have to be paid separately.

  11. The view looks amazing. I never had an idea of such a wonderful beach in Africa. I like the idea of bungalows on the resort, I think it will help tourist get to know each other better. I’m in love with la pirogue and I hope some day I’ll be able to earn enough from blogging to enjoy this awesome experience.
