Townsend Manor Inn Introduce
Nestled in the picturesque village of Greenport, on Long Island's enchanting North Fork, Townsend Manor Inn stands as a property with a rich history and a prominent presence. While specific details about its current operational focus are not extensively detailed in all public domains, its long-standing status in Greenport suggests it aims to provide a unique lodging experience for visitors exploring this charming maritime community. Greenport is renowned for its vibrant downtown, historic architecture, and as a gateway to the North Fork's acclaimed wineries, farm stands, and scenic beauty.
As an establishment that carries the "Inn" designation, Townsend Manor Inn typically implies a more intimate and personalized stay compared to larger, more standardized hotels. Historically, inns like Townsend Manor often offer a blend of accommodation and dining services, aiming to create a comprehensive experience for their guests. Given its location, one might anticipate a focus on the relaxed, coastal charm that defines the North Fork.
However, it's important for prospective visitors to note that recent customer feedback indicates areas where the guest experience, particularly concerning the on-site restaurant and property maintenance, may fall short of expectations. Reviews highlight challenges with staff responsiveness, particularly in the dining area, and concerns about the physical condition of the property and rooms, along with unusual payment policies for beverages. While the historical allure and prime location in Greenport remain, potential guests are advised to manage their expectations regarding service and amenities based on these recent insights. This review will aim to provide a balanced overview, drawing on available public information to help locals and visitors make informed decisions about their stay in Greenport.
Townsend Manor Inn boasts a prime location at 714 Main Street, Greenport, NY 11944, USA. This address places it squarely in the heart of Greenport Village, a highly desirable and scenic destination on Long Island's North Fork. The inn's position on Main Street suggests easy access to many of Greenport's most cherished attractions and local amenities.
For visitors arriving by car, Greenport is accessible via New York State Route 25 (Main Road), which runs the length of the North Fork. The inn's address on Main Street means it's generally straightforward to locate upon entering the village. Parking availability at the inn or nearby would be a key consideration for guests, typical of a historic village setting.
One of Greenport's significant advantages for accessibility is its robust public transportation options, particularly for those traveling from New York City. The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) provides direct train service to Greenport, making it an excellent choice for a car-free getaway. The Greenport LIRR station is typically within walking or a short taxi distance of the village center, and thus, likely close to Townsend Manor Inn.
Additionally, the Hampton Jitney and Hampton Ambassador bus services offer comfortable and convenient transportation from various points in New York City directly to Greenport. These services often have stops centrally located within the village, making the inn easily reachable for guests utilizing these options.
The inn's proximity to Greenport Harbor also implies potential access to ferry services. The Shelter Island Ferry, for instance, departs from Greenport, connecting visitors to Shelter Island. This multi-modal accessibility makes Townsend Manor Inn's location highly convenient for a wide range of travelers, allowing them to explore Greenport's shops, restaurants, galleries, and waterfront activities with ease. While the location itself is a definite strong point, prospective guests should still consider transportation specifics based on their personal travel plans.
Based on the general understanding of a historic inn and available public feedback, Townsend Manor Inn aims to provide various services, primarily focusing on accommodation and on-site dining, though the quality of these services, particularly dining, has received mixed reviews.
Guest Accommodation: The primary service offered is lodging, with individual rooms available for overnight stays. The quality of these rooms, however, has been noted in reviews as potentially requiring maintenance.
On-Site Restaurant/Dining: The inn operates a restaurant, which is open for dinner (and potentially other meals depending on operational hours). Customer reviews indicate that reservations are taken, and a variety of table types (e.g., high tops, low tops) are available.
Bar Service: The restaurant likely includes a bar area where beverages are served. However, a significant point of customer feedback indicates that beverages are required to be paid for with cash only, which could be an inconvenience for guests accustomed to credit card payments.
Guest Service/Front Desk: Like any accommodation, guests would expect front desk services for check-in, check-out, and general inquiries. Customer reviews suggest varying experiences with staff politeness and problem resolution, especially in the dining area.
Event Hosting (Implied): Given its nature as an inn and its location in a popular area, Townsend Manor Inn might historically have hosted small events or gatherings, though current confirmation would be needed.
Parking: While not explicitly detailed, it's customary for inns of this type to offer some form of guest parking, which would be crucial given the Greenport village setting.
It is important to reiterate that while these services are typically offered by an establishment of this type, recent customer reviews indicate that the execution and quality of service, particularly concerning the restaurant experience and property maintenance, may not consistently meet guest expectations. Therefore, prospective guests should make inquiries directly to confirm specific service details and manage their expectations accordingly.
Townsend Manor Inn, as a historic establishment in Greenport, possesses inherent features and characteristics that might appeal to certain visitors, though recent customer feedback also points to aspects that could be considered less positive.
Historic Charm and Character: As implied by its name and long-standing presence in Greenport, the inn likely boasts a rich history and unique architectural elements. For visitors who appreciate properties with a sense of the past and a distinct character that differentiates them from modern chain hotels, the inn's historical essence could be a significant draw.
Prime Greenport Village Location: Its address on Main Street places it in the heart of Greenport, a highly walkable and vibrant village. This allows guests easy access to the waterfront, boutique shops, art galleries, local restaurants, and the village's lively maritime atmosphere without needing to drive.
Potential for Waterfront Views/Access: Given Greenport's nature and the inn's location, there is a strong possibility that some areas of the property or certain rooms might offer views of the harbor or provide relatively easy access to the waterfront, which is a major highlight of staying in Greenport.
Intimate Setting: As an "inn" rather than a large hotel, Townsend Manor Inn likely offers a more intimate and personal atmosphere. For guests seeking a quieter retreat and a less bustling environment, this could be a distinct advantage.
On-Site Dining Convenience: The presence of an on-site restaurant provides convenience for guests, offering dining options without having to leave the premises. While reviews indicate mixed experiences, the availability of this amenity can still be a positive for some.
It is crucial, however, to contextualize these potential highlights with recent customer reviews. Feedback mentions "not in good condition inside and out," "lots of deferred maintenance," and an "individual room that we were provided was not in good shape." Additionally, the "cash only" policy for beverages in the restaurant and challenging interactions with dining staff regarding table seating and a child's injury have been cited as significant negative experiences. Therefore, while the historical appeal and location are strong features, potential guests should be aware of these reported conditions and service issues to set appropriate expectations.
As a historic inn, Townsend Manor Inn's approach to "promotions" or "special offers" might differ from larger hotel chains. Specific, publicly advertised discounts or packages are not readily available in the provided information or common review formats. However, establishments of this type often offer value in less conventional ways or through direct inquiry.
Generally, inns might consider:
Off-Season Rates: Greenport, like many popular coastal destinations, experiences peak and off-peak seasons. The inn might offer more competitive rates or special packages during the quieter months (e.g., late fall, winter, early spring, excluding major holidays) to attract guests.
Mid-Week Discounts: Stays from Sunday through Thursday often come at a lower price point compared to weekend rates, which could be a form of unadvertised promotion for travelers with flexible schedules.
Long-Stay Packages: For guests planning an extended visit to the North Fork, the inn might offer reduced per-night rates for stays of, for example, three or more nights.
Direct Booking Incentives: To encourage guests to book directly through their website or phone, inns sometimes provide exclusive benefits that are not available through online travel agencies. This could include a small discount, a welcome amenity, or more flexible cancellation policies.
Event-Specific Offers: If the inn caters to local events or festivals in Greenport (e.g., maritime festivals, wine events), they might offer special packages tied to these occasions.
Given the customer feedback regarding operational aspects, including the restaurant's policies and general maintenance, any potential "special offers" should be weighed against these considerations. Prospective guests are strongly advised to contact Townsend Manor Inn directly via phone or their official website (if available) to inquire about current rates, any seasonal packages, or unadvertised specials. This direct communication would also provide an opportunity to ask specific questions about the property's current condition and the dining experience to ensure it aligns with their expectations.

While a specific website URL was not provided in the prompt, for the most comprehensive and up-to-date information, including photos, room descriptions, and booking capabilities, it is highly recommended to search online for "Townsend Manor Inn Greenport" to locate their official website. Direct contact via phone is often the best way to discuss specific needs, clarify policies (such as the cash-only beverage policy), or address any concerns before making a reservation, especially given the diverse customer feedback.
For locals in the New York region, particularly those looking for a charming escape to Long Island's North Fork, Townsend Manor Inn in Greenport presents itself as a potential destination, primarily due to its enviable location and historical character. New Yorkers often seek unique experiences that offer a break from the city's hustle, and Greenport itself, with its maritime history, vibrant village life, and proximity to wineries, is a perennial favorite for weekend getaways or longer stays.
The inn's prime address on Main Street is a significant draw for locals. It means guests are within easy walking distance of Greenport's quaint shops, diverse restaurants, art galleries, and the picturesque waterfront. This accessibility allows New Yorkers to fully immerse themselves in the village's ambiance without needing a car once they've arrived, a welcome change for those accustomed to urban commuting. Being close to the LIRR station and Hampton Jitney stops further enhances its appeal for those preferring public transport for their escape.
The historical nature of Townsend Manor Inn could also be a major draw for locals who appreciate properties with character and a story, offering a distinctly different experience from a modern hotel. The intimate setting of an inn often provides a more personal and quieter retreat, appealing to those looking to truly relax and disconnect.
However, it's crucial for local New Yorkers to consider recent customer feedback when evaluating Townsend Manor Inn's suitability. Reviews highlighting issues with staff professionalism in the restaurant, a cash-only policy for beverages, and concerns about property maintenance indicate that the guest experience may not always align with the premium expectations often associated with Hamptons-area inns. For locals prioritizing seamless service and well-maintained modern facilities above historical charm, these points warrant careful consideration.
Despite these reported shortcomings, for those who value a prime Greenport location, a historic ambiance, and are willing to manage expectations around service and specific operational quirks (like the cash-only policy), Townsend Manor Inn could still be a suitable choice for a North Fork getaway. It offers a portal to the authentic Greenport experience, making it a viable option for New Yorkers seeking a quaint and conveniently located retreat.

Townsend Manor Inn Reviews
I'm writing solely on our experience in the restaurant. We made reservations for a 4 top, myself, my husband and our two children, ages 7 and 10. We were given a high top and when requesting a regular low top the waitress told us flat out "no, the bigger table was to seat larger groups in case they come in." And it wasn't in a nice way. Just real jerky about it. Meanwhile, they also had an available hightop that would sit a larger group. Additionally, the larger low top were two smaller tables put together and could have easily been separated. There were also two other low tops that could have been put together once the two other tables left. These two tables were almost finished with their meals. If we were a walk in I understand putting us at a high top, but we actually made a reservation. The waitress is not exactly friendly or willing to offer any other options. She basically told us that this is just how it is.The real problem was that after appetizers, my 7 year old's chair fell back and if another diner from the neighboring table didn't catch her she would have hit her head as the chair fell from it's high position. She did hurt her leg as it was caught in the chair. I took my girls to the bathroom and my husband told the waitress what happened. Rather than apologize and ask how our child was, she went into how we should have requested a low top when calling for our reservation and this was the policy. My husband got really annoyed at her and told her that this policy was bs. The table with the regular height chairs that we requested and were denied remained empty for the duration of our dining experience. By the time my husband had complained the two other 4 tops at regular height were empty and already reset. But this waitress just didn't offer any resolution to try to make this right. At no point did a manager or owner come out to apologize or see if our child was okay. When I paid the bill, giving her a standard 20% tip, she gave me the same reason she gave my husband, to call and request a low top with the reservation. I responded that my child could have really gotten hurt and they need to do better. Her response, "I know, but I've seated a that table before and then a 6 or 8 top would come in and couldn't get seated."If we were all adults, I get to keep us seated at a high top, but we had two small children and as mentioned above there were other options she could have given us or a larger group if they had come in (never did!) This is the third and final year we will ever come to this restaurant.
Aug 19, 2024 · Christine BrigantiThe property was not in good condition inside and out. Lots of deferred maintenance. The individual room that we were provided was not in good shape. It was odd that they require for you to pay for beverages with cash only. I don’t know if they are trying to avoid paying taxes, but it made the experience not enjoyable. Why would you not accept credit card? It’s 2024.
May 27, 2024 · James RippeonI went here as part of a group trip. We stopped here for lunch. I was not impressed at all with the food. The chicken was a low grade quality. It had a chewy texture like it had fat in it and there were some hard things in it. I had to spit it out. The salmon was so so. Kind of mushy I dont know if it was because it was a buffet or what. I'd like to try the dining experience as a guest. Maybe the food is better off the menu. I feel they would try to impress a group of 50 people that were 1st timers but they didn't.
Sep 13, 2023 · sharon butlerWe rented a room in this hotel just a few days before our trip. It was the only reasonable priced hotel in the area. The hotel is clearly undergoing some renovations and the building we stayed in, Gingerbread, recently had its exterior painted. The inside was very clean and spacious but decor was outdated. Everything worked well in the room but the beds could definitely need an upgrade as they have been well worn over the years. The location is absolutely perfect, just a short walk to the main streets and town of Greenport. The staff working at the hotel were so kind and friendly. They offered free parking with your stay on site which was great and their pool looked lovely. Overall, we got what we paid for and would go back with the hopes that they upgrade the beds in the near future. 😊
Aug 18, 2022 · Dee CiaccioWe stayed here in July. Our room smelled so terribly of mold and mildew I really considered sleeping in the car. I understand these are old historic buildings, and they are beautiful, but the air quality in our room was so bad it was unhealthy. When I went to the desk to ask about it, they gave me a can of glade. So after spraying the glade, the room smelled like a musty toilet bowl. I called again after that didn't work and was basically told too bad. Nice that you didn't care or offer any apology. The main house didn't smell. For $400 a night it would have been nice to not go to bed and wake up with a headache because you refuse to fix this issue that seems to have been a problem for some years based on these other reviews. I would have kept the windows open all night if it wasn't 90 degrees out. Might be time to invest and make repairs so your guests can breathe clean air. It really is a shame because the location is perfect, the pool is very nice, and the place has so much charm. It's probably just an issue with the last small building but it has to be fixed- either the carpets need to be replaced or the walls, something to make it livable for your paying guests.
