Degnan Park Introduce
For residents across New Jersey, particularly those in the vibrant West Orange area, access to local green spaces is a cherished amenity. Degnan Park, situated at 650 Pleasant Valley Way, offers a unique blend of natural serenity and family-friendly recreation right within the community. While opinions on its scope may vary, this park provides a distinct experience for those seeking a quiet moment by the water or a safe place for children to play.
Degnan Park centers around a tranquil pond, providing a focal point for visitors who enjoy the calming presence of water. The park's design emphasizes passive recreation, making it an ideal spot for individuals looking for a gentle nature walk or a peaceful place to sit and relax. Despite its size, many find its well-maintained grounds and dedicated features offer a pleasant escape from the everyday hustle.
The park's proximity to a local school is a significant advantage, particularly for families. This strategic location means that the playground area often buzzes with the joyful energy of children, establishing Degnan Park as a popular spot for young families in the West Orange community. It serves as a convenient and accessible outdoor space where kids can burn off energy, and parents can socialize while enjoying the natural surroundings.
It’s important to note that like many urban and suburban green spaces, Degnan Park has its unique characteristics. While the pond offers a serene view and a pleasant walking loop for part of its perimeter, it's recognized that the full circumference of the pond isn't publicly accessible due to adjacent private properties. This, however, does not detract from the enjoyable experience of the available trails and the park's central amenities.
Ultimately, Degnan Park stands as a testament to the diverse range of green spaces available to New Jersey residents. It might not be a vast wilderness, but it offers a valuable and much-appreciated local resource for relaxation, gentle recreation, and family fun, right in the heart of West Orange.

Free Access to Recreation: The primary benefit is the availability of free outdoor space for walking, enjoying nature, and children's play, making it an accessible option for daily recreation without any cost.
Community Events (Potential): While not specific to Degnan Park, local municipal recreation departments often organize free community events in their parks. The "nature walk" aspect of Degnan Park makes it suitable for such programs.

Degnan Park Reviews
My review is only about the pond. I stopped here briefly and enjoyed the serenity of the water. The pond is shallow with a consistent depth of around 2.5 ft and a hard floor. The grounds appear very well maintained and almost entirely free of goose poop, which is always nice. There is also a trail loop around the pond which provides a quaint nature walk. In all, a nice experience.
Jul 30, 2024 · Dan HarcsztarkNot as beautiful as the pictures other people showed before. The pond is stinky and no full walkway to go around the lake. Only half of it, the other half is occupied by private property. It cannot count as a park, too small, and half of the area was owned by private property.Only because it is next to a school, the playground is popular for kids.
May 13, 2025 · Melody LeeBeautiful little park with a lake, lots of wildlife, a path that almost reaches around the lake, and a playground ideal for 3-10 year olds!
Aug 11, 2023 · Tzvi PittinskyLocal park, pretty well maintained, though the sidewalks desperately need to be repaired. Right next to West Orange high school, makes it convenient with ample parking. Small recreation center attached that can be rented for events and parties.
Nov 06, 2018 · Suranjan RayNice park for kids to play. New and updated equipment. Beautiful view of the pond.
