Freshkills North Park Reviews
The park is newly finished 1st phase of Freshkills North Park comprising about 20 acres. While trails’ mileage is very modest at this point, park’s amenities are quite impressive. Specifically I liked bird tower’s construction and observation deck: gorgeous views even in rainy weather. There are restrooms at comfort station and picnic area, separate jogging and hiking paths, ample brand-new parking area off Wild Ave. Warning about current Google Maps directions: even pinpointing parking’s GPS location didn’t help with directions (app led to roads accessible only to authorized city vehicles). Best way is to enter 350 Wild Ave into Maps and turn into park’s parking lot at intersection of Wild Ave and E Service Rd.
Jan 14, 2024 · Mike ZI was looking for a 2 mile trail near my hotel and was referred here. It was well-paved and refreshing/relaxing with birds chirping and two viewpoints. Aside from steps to the bird tower, it seemed wheelchair friendly too. I started at the Wild Ave entrance and circled around through Schmul Park for close to 5K steps (2miles). There were benches, picnic tables, viewpoints near Wild Ave entrance and a playground, baseball field, basketball court near Schmul. I walked approx .3 miles along Wild Ave to complete the circle. Also saw a security vehicle monitoring the area near Wild Ave (I'm guessing this is due to its proximity to the "do not enter" fenced off sanitation grounds/ facilities). Definitely recommend the walk for fresh air and bird chirps.
Jul 30, 2024 · SA SAPhase 1 of Freshkills is now open. The park runs along the North Mound of the former landfill. There are 2 entrances, one behind Schmul Park/Playground, and the other at the end of Wild Avenue (this entrance has a parking lot and the bike repair stations). I did ride my bike to the park. Unfortunately there is no bike path connection from the Richmond Avenue bike path. So if going by bike you will have share the streets with cars (warning: some parts of Victory Blvd can get narrow). Although the park is bike friendly there is no loop open yet to ride laps around the mound. The path is divided into an asphalt side with painted travel arrows, and a crushed gravel side (I guess for easier walking? Or controlled water run off?). There is 1 eco friendly rest room, a few drinking fountains, and several benches to rest or nature watch. The park also features viewing platforms overlooking the Freshkills marshland. They are nicely located for bird watching (or disconecting from tech). Wildlife has returned, there are hawks and reptiles (native turtles and snakes) so keep an eye on your dog, and keep them on the leash please. One final note, the park is not flat, you will get a little leg workout in.
