The Large Dog Area focuses on providing a fundamental and effective space for off-leash play. Its core services and facilities are designed to meet the primary needs of large dog owners and their pets:
Dedicated Large Dog Space: The park is specifically designated for large dogs, ensuring that bigger breeds have ample room to run, play, and socialize without overwhelming smaller companions. This dedicated space helps in maintaining a safer and more enjoyable environment for all users.
Well-Kept Grounds: Reviews consistently note that the park is well-kept, which suggests regular maintenance to ensure cleanliness and a pleasant environment for dogs and their owners.
Spacious Off-Leash Area: The park is large enough to accommodate plenty of dogs at once, providing sufficient room for them to exercise freely, chase balls, and engage in vigorous play.
Double-Gated Entry System: A crucial safety feature, the double-gated entrance helps prevent dogs from accidentally escaping and ensures that only authorized dogs enter or exit the park, adding a layer of security for pet owners.
Open for Public Use: As part of the Essex County Dog Park system within the South Mountain Reservation, it is open to the public, providing a free recreational resource for local dog owners.
The Large Dog Area, while straightforward in its design, offers several key features and highlights that contribute to its effectiveness and popularity among New Jersey dog owners:
Generous Size: One of the most significant highlights is its ample size, which allows large dogs to truly stretch their legs and engage in high-energy play. This expansive space is crucial for the physical and mental well-being of larger breeds, giving them the freedom to run and explore safely off-leash.
Secure Fencing: The presence of a double-gated entrance and well-maintained fencing is a critical safety feature. This design minimizes the risk of dogs escaping and helps ensure that only appropriate dogs enter the off-leash area, contributing to a secure environment for all.
Dedicated to Large Dogs: The park's specific focus on large dogs is a major benefit. It means that dog owners can bring their bigger pets without worrying about interactions with smaller dogs that might be intimidated or accidentally injured during energetic play.
Community of Large Dog Owners: The park naturally draws owners of large dogs, fostering a community where like-minded individuals can connect, share tips, and build camaraderie. This social aspect extends to the dogs themselves, who benefit from interacting with peers of similar size and energy levels.
Part of South Mountain Reservation: Being located within the South Mountain Reservation adds to its appeal. Visitors can often combine a trip to the dog park with a walk on the reservation's many trails (with dogs on leash outside the designated dog park), offering a more comprehensive outdoor experience.
Emphasis on Owner Responsibility: While some amenities like poop bags may sometimes be available, the park subtly encourages owners to be prepared with their own, reinforcing a culture of responsibility and cleanliness that benefits all users.
As a public dog park managed by the Essex County Parks system, the Large Dog Area does not typically offer traditional "promotions" or "special offers" in the commercial sense. Its primary value is the free and accessible space it provides for off-leash dog exercise.
However, the "special offer" here is the ongoing commitment to providing a well-maintained and spacious environment for large dogs, which is a significant benefit to local residents. The park's existence itself is a valuable community service.
Occasionally, the Essex County Parks system or local dog advocacy groups might host community events, responsible dog ownership clinics, or meet-ups at or near the dog park. These events, while not "promotions" in the commercial sense, serve as special opportunities for engagement and learning for dog owners. We encourage interested individuals to check the official Essex County Parks website or local community boards and social media groups dedicated to dog owners in Short Hills and surrounding areas for announcements about any such special gatherings or initiatives that might enhance your experience at the Large Dog Area. These informal offerings contribute to the park's role as a vibrant community hub for dog lovers.

Large Dog Area Reviews
Great dog park for large dogs. Well kept and large enough for plenty of dogs.
Jun 25, 2023 · Hector GWhen going in or out of the double gates, please ensure that the gate, behind you gets latched closed before entering or exiting the second gate. Also, please make sure it's only your dog(s) going through to make sure none others get away.Although they sometimes have poopie bags, it's best if you carry your own to pick up after your dog.
Aug 28, 2022 · David RShaded big area for the large dogs. My biggest problem is that the whole area is dirt and rocks. So your dog is going to be dirty in some capacity after
May 09, 2023 · Stephen VennemanI wish we lived closer to this park because we only get here on the weekend. There is an annoying dog here and there but overall a wonderful experience with responsible (and nice!) owners
