Very pretty lighthouse at the end of the island. Unfortunately it closes quite early so I didn’t get a chance to go up to the top.Enjoyed the views though, and the beach.Parking lot can be a bit confusing, had to google what the vehicle use fees meant. Still confused, but looks like they are only charged during certain hours. - S. Z. (GreenRR)

Whether you're an avid hiker, a keen angler, a history buff, or simply seeking a tranquil spot to soak in panoramic views, Montauk Point State Park holds something special for everyone.

The park is more than just a picturesque locale; it’s an active and vibrant natural space offering a wide array of activities that cater to all ages and interests. Its distinct geographical position makes it a prime spot for observing migrating birds, spotting seals basking on offshore rocks during the cooler months, and witnessing the fascinating "race" where two major bodies of water converge. We're here to guide you through everything Montauk Point State Park has to offer, ensuring you make the most of your visit to this spectacular New York gem.

Montauk Point State Park is situated at 2000 Old Montauk Hwy, Montauk, NY 11954, USA. Its location at the easternmost tip of Long Island makes it a definitive landmark and a journey to the very end of the island. While it feels wonderfully remote, it's highly accessible by car. The drive out to Montauk is an experience in itself, winding through charming Hamptons towns and picturesque landscapes.

Once you arrive, parking is readily available, though it’s worth noting that vehicle use fees apply during certain hours and seasons. The parking lot can be a bit busy, especially during peak times, but offers convenient access to the park's main attractions, including the Montauk Point Lighthouse and the various trailheads. The park is generally open year-round from sunrise to sunset, allowing ample time to explore its vast offerings. While the lighthouse itself has separate operating hours and admission, the park grounds remain accessible for visitors to enjoy the stunning coastal scenery and natural surroundings.

Services Offered:

  • Parking facilities (vehicle entrance fees apply during specified hours/seasons).
  • Restrooms available near the main parking area and lighthouse.
  • Picnic areas with tables, perfect for a packed lunch amidst stunning views.
  • Gift shop near the lighthouse (privately operated).
  • Food concessions (privately operated, typically seasonal).
  • Accessible fishing opportunities.

Features / Highlights:

  • The iconic Montauk Point Lighthouse: New York's oldest lighthouse, commissioned by President George Washington in 1792. While part of the adjacent Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum (which has its own admission fees), it’s an undeniable centerpiece of the park’s views and a must-see historical landmark. Visitors can climb its 137 steps for unparalleled panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Block Island Sound.
  • Panoramic Ocean Views: Experience breathtaking vistas where the Atlantic Ocean and Block Island Sound meet, often creating a visible "race" of converging tides when the water is calm. Block Island can be seen in the distance on clear days.
  • Extensive Hiking Trails: The park offers a variety of nature trails suitable for different skill levels. These trails wind through diverse landscapes, including rugged coastline, wooded areas, and bluffs, providing opportunities for scenic walks and invigorating hikes. Popular trails offer views of the ocean, the lighthouse, and the unique coastal ecosystem.
  • Wildlife Observation: A prime location for birdwatching, with many migratory species passing through. During the winter months (typically November to April), visitors can often spot seals sunning themselves on the rocks offshore.
  • Fishing: Montauk Point is renowned for its excellent surfcasting, especially when striped bass are running. Both saltwater fishing and sport fishing are popular activities, with permits often required for certain types of fishing or for night fishing and beach vehicle access.
  • Surfing and Windsurfing: The park's coastline offers opportunities for surfing, particularly from December 15th through March 31st. Stand-up paddleboarding is also permitted.
  • Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing: In the winter, the park's trails transform into a serene landscape ideal for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, offering a unique way to experience its beauty.
  • Historical Significance: Beyond the lighthouse, the area has historical connections, including remnants of WWII coastal defense structures nearby in Camp Hero State Park, adding another layer of interest for explorers.

While Montauk Point State Park itself doesn't typically run direct promotions or special offers in the traditional sense, there are ways to enhance your visit and potentially save on admission. New York State Parks offer the Empire Pass, an annual pass that provides unlimited day-use vehicle entry to most facilities operated by State Parks and the State Department of Environmental Conservation, including forests, beaches, and trails. This can be a great value for frequent visitors to state parks across New York.

Additionally, for Suffolk County residents, a Green Key card offers reduced fees for park activities and parking. Various classifications of the Green Key card exist, including discounted options for active military, seniors (62 and older with a NYS Driver's License often get free parking on weekdays), individuals with disabilities, and veterans, among others. These programs are designed to make New York's natural treasures more accessible to its residents. It's always a good idea to check the New York State Parks website or contact the park directly for the most current information on fees, permits, and any available discount programs.
