The name "Mount Eden Malls" refers to a series of traffic islands along Mount Eden Parkway, historically honoring Rachel Eden who acquired a significant portion of the land in the early 19th century. The term "malls" harks back to early European public spaces, long, narrow strips of grass originally used for a game called pall-mall, which were designed to offer a protected, leisurely environment amidst city streets. While not a traditional shopping mall as the name might suggest to some, Mount Eden Malls perfectly embodies its historical parkland definition – a linear, open space designed for public enjoyment and circulation, providing a refreshing contrast to the urban landscape around it. The park also has a history tied to local community efforts, having been named Chet Henderson Square for a period in honor of a World War II veteran active in improving Bronx parklands.
The environment at Mount Eden Malls is characteristic of an urban green space, providing a much-needed break from the surrounding concrete. It’s an “okay place to sit and relax and watch the hustle and bustle,” as noted by one visitor. While the overall impression is that people don't really bother you, reflecting a sense of peace amidst the city's energy, some reviews mention an occasional presence of garbage on the ground. However, other accounts describe it as "usually quiet and clean," suggesting that the cleanliness can vary but it generally offers a tranquil setting during daylight hours. The park features benches where visitors can sit and unwind, observing the daily life of the neighborhood. The presence of trees and green patches contributes to a more natural and inviting atmosphere, making it a pleasant spot for a brief escape or a moment of contemplation.
Mount Eden Malls provides several features and services that cater to the local community:
Farmers Market: A significant draw for the community is the farmers market. It operates on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 3 PM, offering fresh produce. While described by one reviewer as "very small" and primarily selling "vegetables," it provides a direct link for residents to access fresh, local goods, promoting healthy eating and supporting local vendors. This regular event transforms the park into a vibrant marketplace, adding a dynamic element to the otherwise serene environment.
Food Vendors: For those looking for a quick bite, the park often hosts food trucks and hot dog/grill vendors. One common offering is halal food, catering to diverse tastes and providing convenient meal options for park-goers. This makes it a practical spot for lunch or a snack, adding to its appeal as a convenient community gathering point.
Relaxation Areas: The park is equipped with benches, inviting visitors to sit, relax, and observe their surroundings. This simple amenity is crucial for an urban park, offering a space for rest, conversation, or simply enjoying the outdoors. The presence of an ice cream truck parked on the corner all day further enhances the leisurely atmosphere, especially during warmer months.
Wildlife Interaction: For those who enjoy connecting with nature, visitors have the option to feed the "lil birds," adding a small, charming interaction with local wildlife that can be particularly appealing for families or individuals seeking a moment of simple joy.
Beyond the basic amenities, Mount Eden Malls functions as a versatile public space. It's often described as a "family park," indicating its suitability for visitors of all ages. While it can get "very congested and noisy during holidays," which is common for popular public spaces, for the most part, it maintains a quiet and peaceful ambiance. Its location amidst the urban fabric makes it easily accessible for local residents, serving as an extension of their living space. The park's linear design, as a series of traffic islands, also contributes to its distinct character, offering pockets of green space along the parkway rather than a single expansive lawn. This layout can make it feel more integrated into the daily flow of the neighborhood, providing numerous entry points for casual visits.
As a "Scenic Spot" within the NYC Parks system, Mount Eden Malls primarily "provides corresponding services or goods for sale" through its regular farmers market and food vendors. This integration of commerce and leisure is a key aspect of its appeal, offering tangible benefits to the community beyond just green space. The park's promotional value lies in its direct service to the local population, fostering community interaction and providing convenient access to fresh food and prepared meals. It serves as a testament to how urban green spaces can be multi-functional, supporting local economies and community health simultaneously.
For those seeking a low-key outdoor experience in the Bronx, Mount Eden Malls presents itself as an accessible and practical option. It’s a place where one can unwind, grab a bite, pick up fresh vegetables, and simply be part of the vibrant Mount Eden community. Its offerings, though modest, meet essential local needs, making it a valuable asset in the neighborhood’s daily life. While not a destination for grand events or extensive recreational facilities, its consistent provision of a calm environment and practical services makes it a beloved, everyday scenic spot for those who call the Bronx home.

Mount Eden Malls Reviews
It's an okay place to sit and relax and watch the hustle and bustle People don't really bother you. But there is quite a bit of garbage on the ground. They have the farmers market down below on Tues and Thurs. Until 3pm. You can get something to eat at the food truck (halal) or the hot dog/grill vender. Can feed the lil birds if you like, but over all it's an okay spot.
