The Jane Hotel

113 Jane St, New York, NY 10014, USA

3.0
The Jane Hotel, with its beautifully designed wooden cabins, the old lobby and reception area, and the iconic carpeting, used to be one of my favorite places to stay in New York, located in the West Village. This used to be The Bowery’s little budget sister—a charming, affordable alternative with character and soul. The concept of an affordable hotel that still offered great service and charming design—clearly developed by people with taste and vision—now feels like a thing of the past.A few years ago, after The Jane was sold, it underwent renovation and major changes that compromised everything that once made it special. It’s essentially become a hostel, with a strangely designed reception area tucked away in the basement (which I believe used to be a staff entrance). The original lobby, café, and ballroom have been turned into a bizarrely styled private club for yuppies.Sadly, nothing was done to preserve the original interior. Apart from some superficial cosmetic updates, the bathrooms are still partly functional—some not at all—and those that do work have the charm of a Days Inn. The lighting is overly bright and unflattering, and the place doesn’t smell good. The new (and only) elevator is painfully slow, and I couldn’t even find a staircase. Even the lovely quilted cotton blankets were replaced with itchy polyester ones. There aren’t even water bottles in the rooms anymore. What a sad story. - V K
