I love coming here to trail run when I want do do a shorter 3.5 mile loop. I run the orange trail with my furry baby, and when I want to push to 4 miles, I'll run an additional 2 loops on the orange/white trail. I usually come as soon as the sun is up because I enjoy the solitude. My only complaint, nothing to do with the trail itself, are folks who have their dogs off leash. Otherwise I love the trail because there are aren't any serious elevation changes. It is rocky in lots of sections, which I usually feel afterwards (I use barefoot trail running sneakers), but all of the leaves that have fallen provide some cushion and my favorite part is running along the stream. The trail is pretty well marked although, I must have not been paying attention today because I found myself on the blue trail somehow. I run these trails often, so it wasn't hard to find my way back to the orange trail without having to backtrack, but on a beautiful day, like today, I don't mind getting a little lost and spending extra time out here. - kiina dordoni

Its positioning makes it easily accessible for residents across West Orange, Livingston, Millburn, Maplewood, and other surrounding communities in Northern New Jersey.

Driving to the Turtle Back Rock Picnic Area is generally straightforward, with ample parking typically available on-site or in designated areas nearby. The address is clearly marked, and most GPS systems will guide you directly to the entrance. The park's trails are generally well-maintained, though, as one reviewer noted, they can be rocky in sections. This adds to the natural appeal and provides a good workout for trail runners and hikers. The presence of fallen leaves often provides a natural cushion, adding to the comfort of the trails. While some trails are well-marked with color blazes (like the popular orange trail), it’s always a good idea to pay attention to markers, as even seasoned visitors can sometimes find themselves on an unexpected path – though often, getting a little "lost" here can lead to delightful discoveries. The ease of access combined with the feeling of being truly immersed in nature makes Turtle Back Rock Picnic Area a highly desirable destination for anyone looking for a quick yet profound outdoor escape in the heart of New Jersey.
