While it might not be the largest or most amenity-rich park in the city, its undeniable charm lies in its simplicity and accessibility, making it a valuable part of the local landscape for many residents. This article aims to provide a comprehensive guide to Bealin Square, outlining its location, how to get there, what you can expect to find, and why it remains a suitable spot for those seeking a moment of calm in our bustling borough.
In a city renowned for its iconic green spaces, local neighborhood parks often serve as the unsung heroes of urban living. Bealin Square is one such place. It’s a space that provides a much-needed breathing room, a place where you can simply sit, observe, and enjoy the shade of mature trees. For those who live and work in the 11214 zip code, it offers a convenient and accessible option for a quick break from their daily routines. We understand that not every park needs to be a sprawling destination; sometimes, the best parks are the ones that are right around the corner, ready to offer a moment of peace whenever it's needed. This guide will help you understand the unique appeal of Bealin Square and how it fits into the rhythm of Bensonhurst life.
Bealin Square is conveniently located at the crossroads of Bay Parkway and Stillwell Avenue in Brooklyn, NY. Its precise address is Bay Parkway & Stillwell Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11214, USA. This prominent intersection places it at a highly accessible point within the Bensonhurst community, making it a familiar landmark for residents and visitors alike. It's nestled in a busy commercial and residential area, surrounded by local businesses and residential buildings, ensuring it's never far from where you might be in this part of Brooklyn.
One of Bealin Square’s strongest attributes is its excellent accessibility, particularly for those utilizing New York City’s extensive public transportation network. The park is virtually adjacent to major transit hubs, making it an incredibly convenient stop for commuters and locals. For subway riders, the D train serves the Bay Parkway station, which is just a short walk from Bealin Square. This provides a direct and efficient link to Manhattan and other parts of Brooklyn. Additionally, the N and Q lines also have stations relatively close by, further enhancing subway access.
When it comes to bus service, Bealin Square is exceptionally well-served. The B6, B82, and B82-SBS bus lines all have stops directly at or very close to the park's perimeter, making it an ideal location for those who rely on bus travel. This extensive network of public transit options ensures that residents from various parts of Bensonhurst and beyond can reach Bealin Square with ease, whether they are commuting to work, running errands, or simply looking for a pleasant outdoor space. For those who prefer to walk or bike, the surrounding neighborhood is highly walkable with a "Walker's Paradise" Walk Score® of 92/100 and "Bikeable" Bike Score® of 61/100, featuring sidewalks and relatively flat terrain. While official parking facilities are not a primary feature of such a neighborhood square, street parking is available in the surrounding area, though it can be competitive during peak hours.
Services Offered:
- Public Benches: Bealin Square is well-equipped with numerous benches, providing ample seating for visitors. These benches are strategically placed to offer spots of rest, whether you're waiting for a bus, enjoying a quick break, or simply taking in the surroundings.
- Tree-Lined Shade: The square is characterized by its mature trees, which provide significant shade, particularly on sunny days. This natural canopy creates a cooler, more comfortable environment, making it an inviting spot to escape the sun's glare.
- Wheelchair Accessible: As noted in customer reviews, Bealin Square is wheelchair accessible, ensuring that individuals with mobility challenges can navigate and enjoy the space comfortably. This inclusivity is a crucial aspect of public park design.
- Bus Stop Proximity: A key functional service of Bealin Square is its direct proximity to major bus stops. This makes it an ideal waiting area for public transit users, combining convenience with a pleasant outdoor setting.
Features / Highlights:
- Quiet Respite: Despite its location at a busy intersection, Bealin Square offers a surprising degree of quiet. It's a space where you can find a moment of peace, ideal for reading, light conversation, or simply observing the world go by without feeling overwhelmed by urban noise.
- Strategic Location: Its position at Bay Parkway and Stillwell Avenue makes it a central meeting point and a convenient stop for locals. This strategic placement integrates it seamlessly into the daily routines of the neighborhood.
- Air Quality: As one satisfied local noted, "the air is so clean there." While this is a subjective observation, it highlights the perception that the greenery contributes to a more refreshing environment, a valuable quality in any urban park.
- Historical Context (as part of Seth Low Playground complex): Bealin Square is historically linked to the larger Seth Low Playground complex, which honors Seth Low, a former Mayor of New York City and President of Columbia University. Bealin Square itself is named after Sgt. James J. Bealin, the first Bensonhurst resident killed in the First World War. This historical connection adds a layer of depth to the park, acknowledging its place in the community's past and present.
As a public park managed by NYC Parks, Bealin Square does not typically offer commercial promotions or special offers in the traditional sense. Its primary "promotion" is its free and open access to all members of the public, providing a valuable community resource without any cost. However, the NYC Parks department and local community organizations occasionally host free events, clean-up initiatives, or small community gatherings within parks like Bealin Square or the larger Seth Low Playground complex to which it belongs. We recommend checking the official NYC Parks website or local community boards for any upcoming free events or programs that might take place in or around Bealin Square, which would serve as community-focused "special offers."
Contact Information:

- Phone: (212) 639-9675 (This number is typically for general NYC Parks inquiries or a specific park's administration, rather than a direct line to Bealin Square itself. For general inquiries about NYC Parks facilities, 311 is also a key resource for New Yorkers.)
Bealin Square, while humble in its offerings, is remarkably suitable for locals in the Bensonhurst area for several compelling reasons. Its fundamental role as a tranquil, tree-lined spot to sit and relax cannot be overstated in a densely populated urban environment. For many New Yorkers, a convenient place to catch a moment of quiet, read a book, or simply enjoy the fresh air is incredibly valuable. Its numerous benches provide essential seating, catering to individuals of all ages who might need a rest or a place to simply be.
The park's strategic location at a major intersection and its exceptional accessibility via multiple subway lines (D, N, Q) and numerous bus routes (B6, B82, B82-SBS) make it an incredibly practical destination. This ensures that it is easily reachable for those relying on public transportation, whether they are commuting, running errands, or meeting friends. For bus users, it serves as an ideal waiting area, transforming what could be a mundane wait into a more pleasant outdoor experience. The wheelchair accessibility further enhances its suitability, ensuring it is a welcoming space for everyone in the community.
While a review noted that it has "little else" beyond benches and shade compared to the larger Seth Low Park across the street, this very simplicity can be its strength. Not every park needs elaborate playgrounds or extensive sports facilities. Bealin Square excels as a neighborhood square, providing exactly what many busy New Yorkers need: a straightforward, accessible, and peaceful spot for short breaks and relaxation. It's a reminder that even small green spaces play a crucial role in enhancing urban quality of life, offering an immediate escape from the concrete jungle. For anyone living or passing through the 11214 zip code, Bealin Square stands as a reliable, calm, and convenient local amenity, contributing to the overall well-being and pedestrian-friendly nature of Bensonhurst.

Bealin Square Reviews
A tree lined, shady spot to sit and relax or wait for the bus. A lot of benches, but little else. Accessible ♿️. Not very clean, with an occasional person sleeping on a bench. Other than the bus stop, I don’t know why anyone would choose this place over Seth Low park, directly across the street.
