Houser's Hotel Introduce
Houser's Hotel, located at 785 Evergreen Walk, Ocean Beach, NY 11770, USA, presents a unique and often debated accommodation experience on Fire Island. While categorized as a 'Scenic Spot' on a platform, it functions primarily as a hotel with an integrated bar, offering a specific type of lodging that caters to a particular clientele seeking an authentic, no-frills Fire Island adventure. Its telephone contacts are (631) 583-8900 and +1 631-583-8900.
The environment of Houser's Hotel is deeply intertwined with its Fire Island location. Ocean Beach is a charming, car-free village, which immediately sets a relaxed and pedestrian-friendly tone. Houser's Hotel itself is positioned to offer "gorgeous" views of the bay, providing a picturesque backdrop for guests. This waterfront setting is a significant environmental draw, allowing guests to enjoy stunning sunrises or sunsets over the Great South Bay. The immediate surroundings of the hotel likely feature the quaint, narrow boardwalks and unique architecture characteristic of Fire Island's villages. Being on a barrier island, the air is fresh and salty, and the pace of life is notably slower than on the mainland. However, it is also important to acknowledge that, as an older establishment on a unique island, the interior environment of the hotel, specifically concerning old carpeting and potential odors, has been noted by some guests. Despite this, the overall appeal of its prime location on Fire Island, offering those coveted bay views, often outweighs these internal considerations for its target demographic.
The services offered at Houser's Hotel reflect its functional identity as a budget-conscious option on Fire Island, with a strong emphasis on its bar operations. While phone communication can be challenging due to staffing prioritization of the bar, guests have noted workarounds such as contacting the bar directly. For those who manage to get in touch or arrive in person, the hotel offers notably flexible check-in and check-out services. Guests have experienced "super early" check-in and "super late" check-out, which is a significant convenience given the ferry schedules to Fire Island. Additionally, the staff have been accommodating in allowing guests to "keep our bags there for the day after checking out," providing valuable baggage storage. While traditional hotel amenities like in-room televisions are absent, and showers are located outside the rooms, these are considered trade-offs for a more economical stay in a highly desirable location. The staff are generally described as "friendly," contributing positively to the guest experience despite any logistical challenges. The primary service, therefore, is the provision of an accessible, budget-friendly room on Fire Island, complemented by the social atmosphere of its bar and the flexibility afforded by its staff.
The features of Houser's Hotel are distinct and appeal to a specific type of traveler. The most outstanding feature, as consistently highlighted by guests, is the "gorgeous" views of the bay from the rooms. This panoramic vista can be a powerful draw for visitors seeking a scenic escape. Another significant feature is its affordability relative to other Fire Island accommodations, making it a "budget option for Fire Island." This positions it as an accessible choice for those who want to experience the island without a prohibitive cost. The flexibility with "super early" check-in and "super late" check-out, along with baggage storage, are invaluable practical features that greatly enhance the convenience for travelers navigating ferry schedules. The presence of an air conditioning unit in the rooms, even if its primary function is to "drown out external sounds," is still a comfort feature, particularly during warm summer nights. However, it's also important to objectively note features that might be considered downsides by some guests: the lack of an in-room television, shared showers located outside the room, "microscopic" room sizes, and concerns about the condition of the carpeting and potential odors. Despite these, for a certain demographic, these are simply part of the "it is what it is" charm of a rustic Fire Island experience. The friendly staff also contributes to the overall positive features, as good service can significantly elevate a stay.
For promotional purposes, Houser's Hotel should lean heavily into its unique selling propositions as a 'Scenic Spot' and a value-driven Fire Island stay. Marketing should prominently feature the "gorgeous bay views," showcasing them through high-quality photography, as this is a key differentiator. It should be positioned as the "budget option for Fire Island," appealing to younger travelers, groups of friends, and those who prioritize location and an authentic island experience over luxury amenities. Promotional materials could highlight the convenience of "super early check-in" and "super late check-out," emphasizing the flexibility it offers for maximizing time on the island. While acknowledging the rustic nature (e.g., shared showers, no TV), these aspects can be framed as part of the unique, laid-back Fire Island charm, rather than drawbacks. The presence of the bar should be promoted as a lively social hub, making it attractive to guests who enjoy a vibrant nightlife scene. Promotional messaging could target specific demographics, perhaps with slogans like "If you're young, without kids, and drunk, it's fine," as suggested by a candid review, or more broadly, "Your authentic, budget-friendly Fire Island escape with stunning bay views." Collaborating with local Fire Island businesses or ferry services could also be a promotional avenue. Ultimately, the promotion should aim to attract guests who understand and appreciate the hotel's character, focusing on the unbeatable location, the stunning views, and the value it offers within the unique Fire Island context. The hotel's phone numbers, (631) 583-8900 and +1 631-583-8900, should be clearly displayed for inquiries.

Houser's Hotel Reviews
I wanted to leave a review because of all of the negative reviews. They don't pick up their phones because they're mainly a bar and there's typically 1 or 2 staff who are working the hotel but sometimes the bar becomes understaffed and there is no one to answer the phones, so maybe contact housers bar and ask for hotel staff if you need to get in contact with someone. Our room was clean and the views of the bay was gorgeous. We have stayed in most of the fire island hotels and have to say this one was our favorite. We were able to check in super early and check out super late. Staff let us keep our bags there for the day after checking out as well. The downsides are that there is no TV and showers are outside of the room, but in my opinion the view made up for all of that. The AC drowned out external sounds. Staff is friendly and if this is the budget option for fire island, it's truly not too shabby.
Jul 29, 2024 · Juli MarinaceIt is what it is because of the location and lack of affordable options, but compared to any other place I've ever slept, it's easily the worst. It stunk of sewage, the whole place is all old carpet. Rooms microscopic with zero amenities. Keys open any door. Gets the job done though and I didn't return home with bed bugs or anything...Tldr; If you're young, without kids, and drunk, it's fine. All others should probably take the last ferry back.
Aug 31, 2024 · Mike SweeneyRacist establishment! I visited on 7/3/2022 and waited in line for drinks for 45+ minutes without ever being served. I had the bartenders ignore me multiple times. One white lady wanted to help me order drinks and the bartender told her no and only gave her the drinks she ordered for herself. Afterwards, my friend and I were told to go somewhere else and f off! I wanted to cry! I’ve never felt racism like that in my life and i felt so unwelcome. Luckily, I had two girls who wanted to help me order drinks and it only took them 10 minutes to get us the drinks and the bartenders were so friendly with them. I wouldn’t recommend visiting this place unless you’re white.
Jul 04, 2022 · Kimberly DyceI have stayed here 4 times now. I love this hotel, BUT it's not for everyone. Look, here's the deal: this is a budget hotel. It is literally the cheapest hotel on the island, and yes, I've checked. This is where you stay if you are 1) young and broke and here to party, or 2) you love this island so much that you are willing to sacrifice creature comforts so you can be here for as long as possible on a limited budget. YES, it's true that no one will ever, EVER answer the phone or call you back if you leave a message. Literally not ever. IDK if they even check the messages, so God help you if you need to change your reservation. And YES, the bar stays open late and the music is clearly audible from your room, especially if you have a room that "faces town." But the staff are really kind and friendly if you need something (again, you will have to physically find someone, because no one will ever, EVER answer the phone), the rooms are clean and air-conditioned, and the food is great. The lobster rolls especially are the best I've ever had in my life. OMG the food is so good. I bring silicone earplugs to sleep with, and flip-flops for the communal showers. If you want fresh towels, you will need to find a staff member and ask for them. This is a super-relaxed, super-casual place. If you just need a place to sleep and take a shower as you explore the magical paradise that is Fire Island, then this place is the best. If you want a real hotel experience with maids and room service and fresh towels every day, then look elsewhere. This is a casual place for casual people -- but IMO that's the spirit of Fire Island. People go barefoot here for a reason. I do wish they would answer the phone sometimes though.
Oct 05, 2021 · L JMy daughter and I use to go for a weekend every year and eat at their restaurant which is not cheap. It’s not even that they have such nice accommodations, on the contrary…but rather the nostalgia that brought us back again and again. This year I called and left several messages and no one returned my call/s. It’s simple courtesy unless no one speaks English there which is why they don’t return calls?? Anyway, we stayed at Cleggs and it is much nicer. They know how to run a business in a professional and welcoming way. Thank you Cleggs, we will see you next year 🌞
