For those of us in New Jersey, the desire to trade the hustle and bustle of daily life for the tranquility of nature is a common one. Fortunately, our state boasts an incredible array of outdoor spaces, and nestled within the scenic Ramapo Mountains is a hidden gem that offers breathtaking views and a rewarding hiking experience: Ilgenstein Rock. Located in Mahwah, NJ, this destination is much more than just a rock; it's a vantage point that provides a unique perspective, including a distant yet clear view of the iconic New York City skyline.
Ilgenstein Rock is a highlight along a network of trails that offer an enjoyable outing for hikers of various skill levels. It's an "easy to mediocre trail," making it highly accessible for families, including those with kids, to explore the beauty of the New Jersey wilderness. While the primary draw is the panoramic view from the rock, the journey to get there is equally rewarding, taking you through diverse landscapes and well-marked paths. Whether you're seeking a leisurely stroll in nature, a moderate challenge to get your heart rate up, or simply a stunning vista to inspire, Ilgenstein Rock provides a perfect escape for New Jersey locals looking to connect with their natural surroundings.

It's advisable to research specific parking instructions for the closest access points or look for formal parking areas within the larger park system which then connect to the trails leading to Ilgenstein Rock. Be aware that conditions, especially with leaves, can make paths slippery, so appropriate footwear is always recommended.

Ilgenstein Rock Reviews
So we hiked as this rock was our destination. We couldnt see a parking spot hence parked aside the lake. Found a hidden way to catchup with a trail that is marked with red sign on the trees. There is also a motorable (rv types) trail crossing this red sign road. Then we took blue and then yellow signs to reach this rock. There we saw newyork skyline view. It was an easy to mediocre trail. When we went everything was covered with leaves so was a bit slippery. Good trail for family incl kids.
