Montauk County Park Introduce
For New Yorkers dreaming of a truly immersive coastal escape, far from the typical crowded beach scenes, Montauk County Park stands out as a premier destination. More than just a park, it's a sprawling natural preserve offering a distinctive blend of raw Montauk beauty, unparalleled outdoor recreation, and a unique opportunity for beachfront camping. If you’re seeking a place where you can truly unwind, wake up to stunning water views, and enjoy a sense of space that’s increasingly rare on Long Island, Montauk County Park beckons. It's an ideal spot for those with a sense of adventure, particularly those equipped for 4x4 beach access and self-contained camping, promising a memorable and relaxing retreat.
Montauk County Park, sometimes also referred to as Theodore Roosevelt County Park, is a vast and varied landscape that encompasses woods, beachfront, and significant historical sites. It’s celebrated by locals for its ability to offer a "relaxing day, weekend or even a week," often being "never packed," which is a huge draw in the popular Montauk area. One of its most distinctive features is the opportunity for outer beach access, allowing vehicles with a Suffolk County beach pass to drive directly onto the sand – a thrilling experience for 4x4 enthusiasts. Imagine waking up to the sounds of the waves, with your camping setup right on the water's edge, creating "a beautiful view" right outside your camper.
This park caters specifically to those with self-contained camping units, meaning campers must have a built-in flushable toilet with a holding tank. This ensures a more responsible and environmentally conscious camping experience on the pristine shoreline. Visitors often highlight the ease of "on and off the beach in 4x4" as long as tires are aired down appropriately, and the convenience of a "dump station and air fill on the way out," making the logistics of camping much smoother. Beyond the unique camping, the park offers traditional park amenities like hiking and opportunities for freshwater and saltwater fishing, inviting visitors to explore its diverse ecosystems. The blend of adventure, tranquility, and natural beauty makes Montauk County Park a truly special place on Long Island's East End.
Montauk County Park is conveniently located at 527 E Lake Dr, Montauk, NY 11954, USA. This address places it on the scenic East Lake Drive, which runs along the shore of Lake Montauk, offering picturesque views even before you enter the park itself. Montauk, often called "The End," is the easternmost point of Long Island, renowned for its rugged coastline, fishing industry, and laid-back yet vibrant atmosphere.
Accessibility from New York City to Montauk County Park is primarily by car. The drive out to Montauk is a well-traveled route, typically taking a few hours from Manhattan, offering a gradual transition from urban sprawl to charming towns and finally to the wild beauty of the East End. Once in Montauk, the park is easy to locate off East Lake Drive. A significant aspect of accessibility for many visitors to Montauk County Park is the requirement for a Suffolk County beach pass for 4x4 beach access and outer beach camping. This permit is crucial for those planning to drive onto the beach and set up their self-contained campers. For day-trippers not planning to drive on the sand, standard parking may be available, though it’s always wise to check local regulations, especially during peak season.
While a car is highly recommended for exploring Montauk and accessing the park, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) provides train service directly to Montauk. From the train station, taxis or ride-shares are available to take you the short distance to Montauk County Park. The park's location is also praised for its proximity to town, being "less than a 5 min drive" to Montauk village, where you can find "ice cream before heading home," restaurants, and other amenities, balancing seclusion with convenience. This excellent accessibility makes Montauk County Park a feasible and attractive destination for New Yorkers seeking an outdoor adventure.

As a Suffolk County Park, Montauk County Park operates under a fee and permit system rather than offering traditional "promotions or special offers" in the commercial sense. The primary "offers" relate to access and usage fees.
Suffolk County Green Key Card: While not a discount, obtaining a Green Key Card is essential for Suffolk County residents to access discounted rates on various park services, including camping and certain permits. Non-residents can also purchase Green Key Cards, but at a higher rate.
Suffolk County 4x4 Outer Beach Permit: This is a key requirement for those wanting to drive onto the beach for day use or outer beach camping. It allows access to designated beach areas and includes night fishing in designated parks. This permit must be purchased annually and requires specific documentation (Green Key Card, vehicle registration, driver's license). Information on purchasing can be found on the Suffolk County Parks website.
Camping Fees: Fees for self-contained camping at Montauk County Park are charged per night. These rates vary for residents (with Green Key) and non-residents. Reservations for these highly sought-after spots must be made far in advance, often opening early in the year.
Day-Use Parking: For "day trippers" not utilizing the 4x4 beach access for camping, standard parking fees may apply at designated lots. Check with the park or Suffolk County Parks website for current daily parking rates.
There are no "buy one get one free" deals or seasonal discount codes; the "promotion" for Montauk County Park is its unique set of offerings at established county rates, which provide excellent value for the experience. Early booking for camping is highly recommended due to high demand.

Montauk County Park Reviews
Great place to enjoy a relaxing day, weekend or even a week. Never packed, watch planes land right overhead, com water to relax and enjoy. 4X4 beach access with a Suffolk County beach pass only. Campers day trippers are welcome. Take what you bring! Port-o John’s and dumpsters are by the booth entrance. Town is less than a 5 min drive. Head in for ice cream before heading home.
Aug 22, 2023 · Lu TiradoGreat place to camp. The spaces are right on the water you wake up to a beautiful view. As long as you air down it is fairly easy on and off the beach in 4x4. All units must be self contained you can run a generator during certain hours. Definitely a nice spot to stay for a few days. Dump station and air fill on the way out.
Aug 22, 2024 · John CampanelliVery friendly staff! Came looking for the famous Montauk county Park Driftwood sign. The man at the front said it was taken down for the winter and it will be replaced tomorrow. He let us go in and take a picture of it. Definitely coming back when it’s off! Here are the pictures I got.
May 24, 2024 · J TIf you have a 4x4 get an Outer Beach Pass! There are a bunch of places in Suffolk county that you can drive on the beach... But so far this was my absolute favorite place! Going to try Cedar Point next week...
Jul 13, 2020 · Thomas AebisherIt's a beautiful resource- from the trails to the outer beach camping and fishing. Only complaint is that the criteria for beach camping seems to be arbitrary, or at least restricted to what the person at the desk thinks is "normal". We travel with a unique off road trailer, had every item on the required list but we're turned away because the person didn't get it. If you have a bloated 5th wheel and diesel dually- no worries, you'll be fine. Leave-no-trace micro rig? Screwed.
