Pier 3 Greenway Terrace Introduce
Hello, New Yorkers! Are you looking for a tranquil spot to unwind, soak in breathtaking views, or simply enjoy a moment of peace away from the city's ceaseless energy? Then you absolutely must discover Pier 3 Greenway Terrace, a captivating section of the renowned Brooklyn Bridge Park. This isn't just another viewpoint; it’s a thoughtfully designed urban oasis that offers an unparalleled perspective of the iconic Manhattan skyline, the majestic New York Harbor, and the inspiring Statue of Liberty. It’s a testament to how our city innovates to provide diverse and engaging public spaces.
Located on Pier 3, which was the final pier to be transformed into parkland, the Greenway Terrace completes the continuous waterfront promenade that stretches from Pier 1 to Pier 6. Visitors consistently rave about the "amazing views" and the peaceful ambiance, noting how the entire waterfront has been "refurbished into an appealing park." Here, you can find a quiet seating nook beneath mature Metasequoia trees, spread out on a sprawling lawn for a picnic, or simply walk along the water’s edge, feeling the gentle breeze from the East River. As one local enthusiastically puts it, "I cannot wait for the summer to return!" — a sentiment shared by many who cherish this well-kept and increasingly lush waterfront destination.
Pier 3 Greenway Terrace is perfectly situated within Brooklyn Bridge Park, with its primary access point on Furman St, Brooklyn, NY 11201, USA. This prime waterfront location positions it to offer some of the most spectacular panoramic views of the New York Harbor, including Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.
One of the greatest advantages of Brooklyn Bridge Park, and thus Pier 3 Greenway Terrace, is its exceptional accessibility for all New Yorkers, regardless of their mode of transportation:
- Subway: Multiple subway lines serve the park's various entrances, placing Pier 3 within easy reach. The A/C, 2/3, 4/5, F, and R subway lines all have stops within a reasonable walking distance. For example, Court St (R, 2, 3) and High St (A, C) are nearby stations that provide convenient access.
- Bus: Several MTA bus routes, including the B25, B61, B63, and B67, operate with stops near Brooklyn Bridge Park, offering direct connections to the waterfront from different parts of Brooklyn.
- NYC Ferry: For a truly unique and scenic approach, the NYC Ferry provides direct service to both Pier 1 and Pier 6 within Brooklyn Bridge Park. From either ferry landing, Pier 3 Greenway Terrace is a pleasant stroll along the promenade. This offers a fantastic way to enjoy the harbor views even before you arrive.
- Car and Parking: While street parking in Brooklyn can be challenging, particularly during peak hours, there are paid parking garages available in the vicinity of Brooklyn Bridge Park, including options along Furman Street. Metered parking may also be available. However, due to potential limitations, using public transportation, biking, or walking is generally recommended.
- Walking and Biking: The entire Brooklyn Bridge Park features an extensive network of beautifully paved pathways, making it incredibly easy to walk, jog, or bike to and through Pier 3 Greenway Terrace. These paths are meticulously maintained and offer smooth surfaces, suitable for strollers, wheelchairs, and recreational biking. The park is fully ADA accessible, ensuring that all entrances, pathways, and green spaces, including the lawns at Pier 3 Greenway Terrace, have accessible entry points, making it a welcoming destination for visitors with mobility needs.
This thoughtful integration into New York City's transportation network ensures that this stunning waterfront attraction is accessible to everyone.
While Pier 3 Greenway Terrace itself is a feature within Brooklyn Bridge Park, it benefits from the comprehensive range of services and amenities available throughout the larger park. These services are meticulously maintained and managed by the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation to enhance the visitor experience.
- Public Restrooms: Clean, modern, and accessible public restrooms are conveniently located at various points throughout Brooklyn Bridge Park, including near Pier 2 and Pier 5, which are easily accessible from Pier 3 Greenway Terrace.
- Food and Beverage Concessions: The park offers a variety of award-winning food and drink concessions across its piers. While Pier 3 Greenway Terrace is more focused on passive recreation, visitors are a short walk away from concessions at nearby piers (e.g., Pier 1, Pier 5, Pier 6) where they can purchase refreshments, snacks, or full meals to enjoy with a view.
- Picnic Areas: The lawns and seating areas at Pier 3 Greenway Terrace are ideal for picnicking. While there might not be dedicated grilling stations directly on the Terrace (those are at Pier 5 Picnic Peninsula), the expansive lawns and numerous shady seating nooks provide perfect spots for enjoying packed lunches or takeout.
- Park-wide Wi-Fi Hotspots: Visitors can stay connected throughout Brooklyn Bridge Park, including areas around Pier 3, with strategically placed Wi-Fi hotspots, allowing for easy access to information or sharing moments.
- Maintenance and Security: The park is very well-kept and well-patrolled, as noted by visitors. This commitment to cleanliness and security ensures a safe and pleasant environment for all.
- Permit Information: For larger groups (over 20 people), special events, or commercial filming/photography, permits are required and can be obtained through the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation. This helps manage the park's resources and ensures fair use for all.
- Panoramic Waterfront Views: The absolute highlight of Pier 3 Greenway Terrace is its truly "stunning views." It offers spectacular, unobstructed vistas of the Lower Manhattan skyline, the Brooklyn Bridge, the New York Harbor, Governors Island, and the Statue of Liberty. This is a prime location for photography and simply taking in the iconic beauty of New York City.
- Granite Terrace and Seating Nooks: The terrace features impressive salvaged granite blocks, repurposed from the Roosevelt Island and Willis Avenue Bridges, creating a unique architectural element. These blocks are integrated with planted areas, forming "shady seating nooks beneath the Metasequoia trees," providing comfortable and quiet spots to relax and admire the scenery.
- Expansive Lawns: Pier 3 Greenway Terrace boasts two beautifully maintained lawns: the Glade Lawn, offering direct views of Governors Island and the Statue of Liberty, and a smaller, sloped lawn along the water's edge providing great skyline views. These lawns are perfect for stretching out, picnicking, or simply enjoying the open space.
- Sound-Attenuating Hill: A truly innovative feature is the "sound attenuating hill" that runs along the entire length of the Pier 3 Greenway Terrace. This engineered landscape design effectively separates the park from the noise of Furman Street and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, reducing noise pollution by up to 75% and creating a significantly more peaceful environment within the park.
- Continuous Promenade Access: The Greenway Terrace completes the "continuous promenade" that runs along the water's edge from Pier 1 to Pier 6. This allows for seamless walking, jogging, and biking throughout the park, connecting visitors to various attractions and amenities.
- Growing Tree Canopy: As mentioned by a local reviewer, the trees in the park "have now grown enough to provide shade, and will become even nicer as they mature." This indicates an ongoing commitment to creating a lush, verdant environment that enhances both beauty and comfort.
- Quiet and Peaceful Ambiance: Visitors consistently highlight the serene and "peaceful space" it offers, sheltered from the city's rush. It's a place where one can truly "savor the stillness."
As a public park feature within Brooklyn Bridge Park, Pier 3 Greenway Terrace does not engage in commercial "promotions" in the traditional sense. Its primary "offer" is the free and open access it provides to a world-class public space with unparalleled views and amenities.
However, Brooklyn Bridge Park, managed by the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy, consistently offers a vibrant calendar of free or low-cost programs and events that serve as incredible "offers" for New Yorkers:
- Free Public Programs: The Conservancy regularly hosts a diverse range of free public programs throughout the park. These can include guided walking tours (which might feature Pier 3 Greenway Terrace), family-friendly activities, educational workshops on the park's ecology and design, and various cultural performances.
- Free Fitness Classes: During the warmer months, the park often provides free outdoor fitness classes such as yoga, Pilates, and Zumba on its various lawns, offering a healthy and social way to enjoy the park with breathtaking views.
- Free Outdoor Movies and Concerts: Brooklyn Bridge Park is famous for its free outdoor movie screenings (like "Movies With a View") and concerts during the summer, providing entertainment under the stars with iconic backdrops.
- Free Kayaking: Opportunities for free public kayaking are often available in protected embayments, offering a unique way to experience the waterfront.
- Accessible and Inclusive Design: The park's commitment to ADA accessibility means that its beauty and features are accessible to all, representing a significant "offer" of inclusivity to the community.

This view is amazing! I cannot wait for the summer to return.
Jan 16, 2025 · Iris StewartThe whole waterfront from Brooklyn Bridge to Atlantic Avenue has been refurbished into an appealing park. Of course the views are stunning, but there are also loads of activities (basketball, beach volleyball, etc.). The trees have now grown enough to provide shade, and will become even nicer as they mature. There are a couple of connecting paths yet to open.
