Whether you're an avid angler chasing the thrill of a big catch, a boater seeking adventure, or simply someone looking to unwind with breathtaking sunset views, the Robert Moses State Park Boat Basin promises a memorable experience.
Nestled within the expansive Robert Moses State Park, the Boat Basin capitalizes on its strategic position at the western end of Fire Island. This area is renowned for its diverse marine life, making it a hotspot for fishing, and its accessible waterways that invite all sorts of boating excursions. While it's a part of a larger state park, the Boat Basin itself focuses on providing excellent facilities and opportunities for those looking to connect with the water. In this article, we’ll dive into what makes Robert Moses State Park Boat Basin a must-visit destination for New Yorkers, exploring its prime location, the array of services it provides, its unique features, and why it’s an ideal spot for a local escape.
Robert Moses State Park Boat Basin is conveniently located at 600 Robert Moses State Pkwy, Babylon, NY 11702, USA. Its address places it at the very tip of the Robert Moses Causeway, providing direct and easy vehicular access from mainland Long Island. This is a significant advantage for New Yorkers, as it eliminates the need for ferry travel to reach a Fire Island destination with boating facilities. The causeway itself offers scenic views as you approach the park, building anticipation for the coastal beauty that awaits.
Being part of Robert Moses State Park, the Boat Basin benefits from the park's well-established infrastructure. There are multiple parking fields within the state park, and specific areas are designated for boat basin users. While parking fees apply during peak seasons, the sheer capacity of the parking lots ensures that even on busy days, you can usually find a spot. For those who prefer public transportation, Suffolk Transit's S47 route seasonally connects the park with the Babylon Long Island Rail Road station, offering a convenient alternative to driving. This accessibility makes Robert Moses State Park Boat Basin an effortless day trip or a weekend retreat for anyone living in or around the New York metropolitan area, providing immediate access to saltwater adventures without the complexities of reaching more remote island locations.
The Robert Moses State Park Boat Basin, as part of the larger Robert Moses State Park, offers a comprehensive suite of services and amenities tailored to boating and fishing enthusiasts, as well as general park visitors:
- Day-Use Boat Basin and Marina: The primary service is the day-use boat basin, which can accommodate a significant number of boats, often up to 40-80 personal watercrafts depending on the specific basin. Seasonal boat slips are also available for rent at the East Marina, offering electric hook-ups, potable water, and included parking permits for slip-holders. This makes it an excellent option for both transient visitors and those seeking a seasonal home for their vessel.
- Pump-Out Station: For boaters, a pump-out station is available, promoting responsible boating practices and environmental stewardship.
- Fishing Opportunities: The basin and surrounding waters are renowned for their diverse fishing opportunities. Anglers can fish from the piers, the beach, or from their boats. The area is known for species like fluke, blackfish, dogfish, sea robins, and even various tropical fish, as well as bluefish and striped bass. Night fishing and 4-wheel drive beach access permits for fishing are available for purchase.
- Bait and Tackle Shops: While not explicitly stated as directly within the Boat Basin, the proximity to Captree State Park (which shares close access via the causeway) suggests easy access to bait and tackle supplies, essential for any serious angler.
- Public Restrooms and Showers: As part of a state park, well-maintained public restrooms are available, and showers are accessible during the swimming season at the adjacent beach areas.
- Concession Stands: Various concession stands are located throughout Robert Moses State Park, offering snacks, drinks, and other refreshments.
- First Aid Stations: For safety and peace of mind, first aid stations are available within the broader state park.
- Park Office and Permits: The park office sells various permits, including Empire Passports, fishing permits, surfing permits, and stargazing permits, allowing visitors to tailor their experience.
Robert Moses State Park Boat Basin, and its surrounding parkland, boast numerous features that make it a compelling destination:
- Exceptional Fishing Grounds: As highlighted by local reviews, the area is a prime fishing spot. The diverse marine ecosystem supported by the Fire Island Inlet and Great South Bay means anglers can target a wide variety of fish, from common sport fish to more exotic species. The proximity to deep channels and strong currents makes it a dynamic environment for both shore and boat fishing.
- Stunning Sunset Views: The location on the western tip of Fire Island provides unobstructed views of the sunset over the Great South Bay. This makes it a popular spot for photography and simply unwinding after a day of activities, as noted by enthusiastic visitors.
- Gateway to Fire Island: Field 5 of Robert Moses State Park (a short distance from the Boat Basin) serves as the public's gateway to the Fire Island National Seashore. A scenic 3/4-mile nature walk leads directly to the historic Fire Island Lighthouse, offering an opportunity to explore the island's natural beauty and history on foot.
- Accessibility for All: The park is committed to accessibility, with wheelchair-accessible bathhouses, restrooms, and paved paths. Beach wheelchairs are available free of charge at First Aid Offices, and mobility mats are installed at beach fields during the summer, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the beachfront.
- Diverse Recreational Activities: Beyond boating and fishing, visitors can enjoy five miles of pristine white sandy beaches for swimming, sunbathing, and surfing. The park also features volleyball courts, picnic areas with grills, and an 18-hole Pitch & Putt Golf Course at Field 2, offering a wide array of activities for families and individuals.
- Wildlife and Nature Observation: The park's dunes and salt marshes are a haven for over 300 species of birds, making it a significant stopover for migratory birds and an excellent spot for birdwatching. In September and October, thousands of monarch butterflies migrate through the area, creating a spectacular natural display.
While the Robert Moses State Park Boat Basin itself doesn't typically run individual "promotions" in the commercial sense, New York State Parks often offers programs and passes that can significantly enhance your experience and provide value:
- Empire Pass: This annual pass provides unlimited day-use vehicle entry to most New York State Parks and DEC forest preserve facilities. For frequent visitors to Robert Moses State Park or other state parks, an Empire Pass can offer substantial savings on parking fees throughout the year.
- Permits for Specialized Activities: While not a "promotion," the availability of various permits (e.g., night fishing, 4x4 beach access for fishing, stargazing) allows visitors to customize their experience and access unique opportunities within the park. These permits are sold by the park office and represent specific access privileges rather than discounts.
- Seasonal Programs and Events: State parks frequently host educational programs, guided walks, and special events throughout the year. While not directly a "discount," these events offer added value and unique experiences. It's advisable to check the official New York State Parks website or call the park office for a schedule of upcoming events.
For the most up-to-date information on any passes, permits, or seasonal programs that might be available, it's always best to visit the official New York State Parks website or contact the Robert Moses State Park office directly.

Robert Moses State Park Boat Basin Reviews
If you’re into fishing for weird exotic tropical fish like me, go no further then here! I’ve gotten countless tropical fish here, as well as more well known fish such as fluke, blackfish, dogfish, sea robins, etc. Also saw the guy from a local bait and tackle shop catch a 50 pound give or take rough tailed stingray here too
