Rostel

160 E 116th St, New York, NY 10029, USA

(Warning: bed bugs!) I do not recommend staying here. The bedrooms can only be locked from the inside, meaning that you cannot leave valuable stuff in your room when leaving the rostel (no safe in the room). Sheets were not cleaned. There were tiny bloodstains on the sheets. After a day we found that there were bed bugs. We had to leave to a hotel. After calling the owner we finally got the full amount back after first being asked to stay at their other place in brooklyn with worse google reviews! We had to clean all our clothes with hot water and clean our suitcases (which we eventually threw away). Bed bugs may not sound like a big deal, but you do not want to take those bugs home with you! - Mariam A

Rostel Introduce

New York City, a global hub for culture, commerce, and tourism, offers an endless array of experiences, but finding affordable accommodation can often be a challenge. For travelers seeking a budget-friendly and conveniently located place to stay, hostels often present a viable alternative to traditional hotels. In the vibrant neighborhood of East Harlem, Rostel emerges as one such option, catering to visitors looking for an economical base from which to explore the city. It's important for prospective guests to understand that Rostel operates as a hostel, not a hotel, meaning it offers a different style of accommodation with shared facilities and a more communal atmosphere. This distinction is key for setting expectations and ensuring a comfortable stay.

Rostel aims to provide a practical and accessible lodging solution for individuals and small groups visiting the city. Its appeal lies in its straightforward approach to accommodation, focusing on essential amenities and a prime location that puts guests within easy reach of New York's iconic attractions. For locals who might be looking for temporary accommodation for visiting friends or family, or even for those seeking a short-term, affordable solution for specific needs, understanding what Rostel offers can be incredibly beneficial. The hostel environment is often characterized by shared living spaces, which can foster a sense of camaraderie among travelers from different walks of life.

While the concept of a hostel may differ from a traditional hotel, Rostel's strategic placement in East Harlem provides a compelling reason for consideration. It offers an opportunity to experience a dynamic and culturally rich part of Manhattan, often at a more accessible price point than properties in more central or tourist-heavy districts. This overview will delve into the specifics of Rostel, providing a factual and engaging look at what guests can expect from their stay.

Location and Accessibility

Rostel is strategically situated at 160 E 116th St, New York, NY 10029, USA, placing it in the heart of East Harlem. This neighborhood is known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and diverse community, offering guests an authentic New York experience away from the immediate tourist crowds, yet still incredibly well-connected to all major attractions.

One of Rostel's most significant advantages, as highlighted by a guest review, is its excellent accessibility via New York City's extensive public transportation system. The hostel is located just around the corner from subway access, specifically the 6 train, which has a station at 116th Street and Lexington Avenue. This subway line provides direct and rapid access to major Manhattan destinations including Midtown, Union Square, and Lower Manhattan, making it incredibly convenient for sightseeing, business meetings, or exploring the city's diverse neighborhoods.

In addition to subway access, numerous bus routes traverse 116th Street and surrounding avenues, offering further options for getting around. This comprehensive public transport network means that guests can easily navigate New York City without the need for a private vehicle. For those arriving by air, the hostel is readily accessible from all major New York City airports (JFK, LaGuardia, Newark) via a combination of airport shuttles, Airtrain services, and subway or bus connections.

While its prime location near public transport is a major plus, it's worth noting, as one reviewer mentioned, that the building does not have an elevator. Guests should be prepared to navigate stairs, especially if their room is on one of the upper levels, such as the third floor. This is a common feature in many older New York City buildings and something to consider for travelers with heavy luggage or mobility concerns. Despite this, the ease of finding the location and its connectivity to the rest of the city remain strong points for Rostel.

Services Offered

Rostel, operating as a hostel, provides essential services geared towards budget-conscious travelers. While not a full-service hotel, it focuses on offering a comfortable and convenient base. Based on available public information and guest reviews, the following services can be expected:

  • Accommodation in Private Rooms: Unlike typical dorm-style hostels, Rostel appears to offer private rooms. A guest review mentions "the room was really nice," suggesting individual or small group rooms rather than large shared dormitories.

  • Shared Restroom Facilities: Guest reviews indicate that restrooms are shared among a few rooms on the same floor. One reviewer stated, "Yes u have to share a restroom with 2 other rooms," implying a ratio that is manageable and often results in relatively private use.

  • Shared Kitchen Access: A significant convenience offered by Rostel is the presence of a kitchen. A review noted, "It has a kitchen which was convenient to warm up our left overs," allowing guests to prepare simple meals and save on dining expenses.

  • Luggage Drop-off Service: Guests appreciate the flexibility offered regarding luggage. A reviewer mentioned, "She let us drop off our bags before check in time," which is a valuable service for early arrivals.

  • Early Check-in (subject to availability): The possibility of checking in before the standard time, as experienced by a guest who checked in at 12:30 PM (standard check-in is 4 PM), can be a great convenience, though it is likely dependent on room availability.

  • On-site Management/Assistance: While the extent of on-site staff presence is not fully detailed, the interaction described with "the person in charge" suggests there is someone available to assist guests with check-in and basic queries.

It is important to note that, as a hostel, services like daily room cleaning, concierge services, or extensive on-site amenities typically found in hotels are not a standard offering. Guests should manage their expectations accordingly, focusing on the core value proposition of affordable accommodation and convenient access to city attractions.

Features / Highlights

Rostel offers several features and highlights that contribute to its appeal as an affordable lodging option in New York City:

  • Prime East Harlem Location: Situated in a vibrant, culturally rich neighborhood, Rostel provides guests with an authentic New York experience, away from the typical tourist traps but still well-connected to major attractions. This allows for exploration of local eateries, shops, and cultural sites.

  • Exceptional Subway Access: A major highlight is its proximity to the 6 train at 116th Street. This allows for quick and easy access to iconic Manhattan destinations like Central Park, Museum Mile, Times Square, and the financial district, minimizing travel time for guests.

  • Affordable Pricing: As a hostel, Rostel's key feature is its budget-friendly rates, making New York City accessible to travelers who might otherwise find accommodation costs prohibitive. This provides significant value for money in a high-cost city.

  • Private Room Options: Unlike many hostels that primarily offer dormitory-style sleeping arrangements, guest feedback suggests Rostel provides private rooms, offering a greater degree of privacy and comfort for solo travelers or small groups.

  • Shared Kitchen Facility: The availability of a shared kitchen is a notable convenience, allowing guests to prepare their own meals and snacks. This feature can lead to substantial savings on food expenses during a stay in New York City.

  • Flexible Check-in and Luggage Storage: The willingness of the management to accommodate early luggage drop-offs and potentially early check-ins (when available) adds a layer of convenience for travelers arriving in the city at off-peak hours.

It is crucial to acknowledge concerns raised in a review regarding bed bugs and cleanliness. While one positive review emphasized the location and amenities, the serious nature of the bed bug claim indicates that prospective guests should exercise due diligence, such as bringing travel-size insect repellent and inspecting beds upon arrival, as is prudent practice when staying in any budget accommodation. The hostel's willingness to refund the amount after the issue, as mentioned in the negative review, suggests some level of responsiveness to guest concerns.

Promotions or Special Offers

Given its nature as a budget-friendly hostel, Rostel is less likely to engage in traditional promotional campaigns seen with larger hotel chains. However, its "special offer" inherently lies in its pricing and value proposition for New York City.

  • Competitive Pricing: The most consistent "promotion" is the competitive pricing structure that allows travelers to stay in Manhattan at a significantly lower cost compared to hotels. This makes Rostel an attractive option for budget-conscious visitors year-round.

  • Direct Booking Benefits: While not explicitly stated, booking directly via phone (212) 609-2767 or (+1 212-609-2767) might occasionally yield better rates or more flexibility than booking through third-party platforms, as is often the case with independent accommodations.

  • Longer Stay Discounts: Some hostels and budget accommodations offer discounted rates for extended stays (e.g., weekly or monthly bookings). While not confirmed for Rostel, it's worth inquiring directly if planning a longer visit.

  • Value-Added Amenities: The inclusion of a shared kitchen and private rooms at an affordable price point can be considered a "special offer" in itself, as these features add significant value that might not be found in similarly priced accommodations.

Prospective guests interested in the best available rates or any unadvertised offers are encouraged to contact Rostel directly using the provided phone numbers. It's always advisable to compare prices across various booking platforms and direct inquiries to ensure the most advantageous booking.

Contact Information

For inquiries, bookings, or further information regarding Rostel, guests can use the following contact details:

  • Address: 160 E 116th St, New York, NY 10029, USA

  • Phone: (212) 609-2767

  • Mobile Phone: +1 212-609-2767

Given that it is a hostel, direct phone contact is often the most effective way to communicate with the management for specific questions about room availability, check-in procedures, or any concerns. It is advisable to call during standard business hours for the quickest response.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

For locals in New York City, Rostel presents a highly suitable option for various scenarios, particularly when affordability and strategic location are paramount. While the primary target audience for hostels is often international and domestic travelers, Rostel's offerings can cater to specific local needs.

Firstly, for New Yorkers hosting out-of-town friends or family on a budget, Rostel offers a practical alternative to expensive hotel stays. Its private rooms provide more comfort than traditional dorms, and its location in East Harlem, with excellent subway access, means visitors can easily navigate the city and experience an authentic neighborhood, rather than just tourist traps. This allows locals to recommend a cost-effective solution without compromising on accessibility to Manhattan's attractions.

Secondly, for locals who might find themselves in need of temporary, short-term accommodation – perhaps during apartment renovations, a gap between leases, or for professional assignments requiring a stay in a specific part of the city – Rostel’s affordability and the convenience of a shared kitchen can be incredibly beneficial. The ability to prepare meals can significantly reduce daily expenses, a major consideration in New York City.

Thirdly, the prime location near the 6 train makes commuting throughout Manhattan remarkably straightforward. For locals who might commute for work or events, having an affordable base with such good transport links can save time and money. While the lack of an elevator might be a minor inconvenience, it’s a trade-off many New Yorkers are accustomed to for budget-friendly urban living.

It is crucial for locals recommending or considering Rostel to be aware of and address the review regarding bed bugs. While this is a serious concern, the management's reported quick action in providing a full refund and offering alternative accommodation shows a responsiveness that can mitigate the risk. As with any budget-friendly accommodation, locals should advise visitors to practice basic precautions like luggage inspection.

Ultimately, Rostel's strength lies in its provision of economical, private-room accommodation with kitchen access in a well-connected part of Manhattan. For locals seeking a no-frills, practical, and affordable solution for themselves or their guests, Rostel stands out as a viable and valuable option in New York City.
