San Cap Recreation Area Introduce
For New Jersey residents seeking a refreshing escape into nature, the San Cap Recreation Area in Hewitt offers a fantastic opportunity to explore the scenic beauty of Passaic County. This park, officially part of what is also known as Highlands Preserve, provides a vital green space for outdoor enthusiasts. With its well-maintained hiking trails and the promise of "a good view of Greenwood Lake," as one satisfied visitor noted, San Cap Recreation Area is a beloved local spot for exercise, contemplation, and connecting with the natural world. It’s a place where the vibrant mountain laurel can be found in bloom during the right season, adding to the park's natural allure and making every visit a unique experience.
As locals, we appreciate parks that offer more than just open fields; we look for places that provide a genuine outdoor experience. San Cap Recreation Area delivers on this, offering a diverse landscape that includes both passive recreation areas and access to more challenging trails. It's an integral part of the larger Highlands Preserve, a 224-acre county park adjacent to Abram S. Hewitt State Forest, making it a gateway to even more extensive wilderness exploration. Whether you're an avid hiker, a casual walker, or someone simply looking to enjoy the fresh air and stunning vistas, San Cap Recreation Area provides a welcoming environment for all. It’s truly a testament to New Jersey’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage for the enjoyment of its communities.
However, like any popular shared space, it's important to remember that responsible enjoyment is key. While San Cap Recreation Area is designated as "dog-friendly (leashed)," a recent review highlighted concerns about off-leash dogs affecting the comfort and safety of other visitors, especially children. It's crucial for all dog owners to adhere to New Jersey's Responsible Dog Ownership Act, which mandates that pets be on a leash and under immediate control at all times when in public spaces like parks. This ensures that everyone can enjoy the beautiful trails and serene environment safely and respectfully. By working together, we can maintain San Cap Recreation Area as a welcoming and safe haven for all members of our community, human and canine alike.

San Cap Recreation Area Reviews
Nice hiking trails with a good view of greenwood lake. I was there when the mountain laurel was in bloom
Jun 21, 2018 · Todd TracyThis place is getting real sad for children, especially my son who loves to ride his bike but he can’t because everyone always is letting their dogs off the leash and he doesn’t feel safe because at any given moment they could attack my son which in my opinion if that ever happens they will pay the consequences from his Dad!!!there is no respect at all at this park whatsoever!!
Aug 21, 2024 · Jeremy VandunkThe playground has two sets (one for 2-5 yrs and 5-12yrs) and several little interactive sections along edges. Fully fenced in with benches and a trash can inside. There aren't swings, but there was plenty for us to explore. There is a sunshelter right next playground which would be nice to take a break and have a snack in the heat, however there is no picnic table or chairs so you would need a blanket or something to sit on if desired. There are two porta potties at the entrance (didn't use but they were being cleaned when we left the park). There is also a nice paved walkway around the whole area. We really enjoyed the park today and look forward to visiting again.
