For New Jersey residents seeking a truly secluded and breathtaking natural escape, Green Turtle Lake, nestled within the expansive Ringwood State Park, offers an unparalleled experience. This isn't just another body of water; it's a tranquil oasis in West Milford, Hewitt, known for its pristine beauty, abundant fishing opportunities, and a sense of wildness that truly allows you to "get out next to mother nature." If you're looking to unwind, cast a line, or simply soak in spectacular scenery, Green Turtle Lake is a destination that promises to leave a lasting impression.
Green Turtle Lake is a significant feature of Ringwood State Park, a vast natural area covering 4,444 acres in the heart of the Ramapo Mountains. While Ringwood State Park boasts several attractions, including the historic Ringwood Manor and the New Jersey Botanical Garden at Skylands, Green Turtle Lake provides a more rustic and less developed experience, appealing to those who prefer raw, untouched nature. The lake itself is remarkably large, estimated at around 45 acres, offering ample space for various water-based activities and ensuring a feeling of solitude.
One of the most compelling reasons for New Jersey locals to visit Green Turtle Lake is its reputation as an angler's paradise. As a regularly stocked lake, it offers excellent opportunities for trout fishing, particularly during the winter stocking season. Beyond trout, the lake is home to a healthy population of largemouth bass and chain pickerel, providing diverse challenges for seasoned and novice fishermen alike. The quiet environment makes it an ideal spot for focused angling, though some shared etiquette might be needed with fellow boaters.
Beyond fishing, the surrounding area of Green Turtle Lake within Ringwood State Park provides a clean and inviting environment for walking and enjoying the breathtaking scenery. Its secluded nature ensures a peaceful visit, allowing you to truly disconnect and immerse yourself in the natural sounds and sights of the Ramapo Mountains. For those in New Jersey who long for an authentic wilderness experience without venturing too far from home, Green Turtle Lake is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
Green Turtle Lake is nestled within the sprawling Ringwood State Park, with its primary location identified as Green Turtle Lake, West Milford, NJ 07421, Hewitt, NJ 07421, USA. This dual-town reference highlights its position in a somewhat remote, yet accessible, part of Passaic County in the Northern New Jersey Highlands, bordering communities like West Milford and Hewitt.
Ringwood State Park itself is easily accessible from major roadways, including Exit 57 off Route 287. However, reaching Green Turtle Lake specifically within the park requires a bit more navigation, as it's known for its secluded setting. Access to Green Turtle Lake is generally via an unpaved road. Visitors should be aware that "parking near Green Turtle Lake is informal, with no designated parking area. Visitors can park their vehicles along the unpaved road leading to the lake, as long as they do not obstruct others." This informal parking reflects the lake's more rustic and natural character, emphasizing its appeal to those seeking a less developed outdoor experience.
While the immediate area around Green Turtle Lake itself might present challenges for those with mobility issues due to informal parking and rugged terrain, the larger Ringwood State Park does offer some wheelchair-accessible facilities, including parking lots and restrooms at other designated areas like Shepherd Lake. However, for Green Turtle Lake, a certain level of preparedness for a more natural, less manicured environment is advisable.
Despite its secluded feel, Green Turtle Lake is within a manageable driving distance for many New Jersey residents, particularly those in Northern and Central parts of the state. This makes it an ideal spot for a day trip focused on fishing, quiet contemplation, or simply enjoying the breathtaking scenery of the Ramapo Mountains. The journey to Green Turtle Lake is part of the adventure, leading you deeper into the tranquil heart of New Jersey's natural beauty.

Green Turtle Lake - Ringwood State Park Reviews
It was my first time here,, but won't be my last. It's so beautiful here,,breathtaking scenery, it's so secluded. The lake is humungous, from what the guys there was telling me,, it's forty acres an that's just the lake.. so if you really want to get out an next to mother nature,,, this is the place to go.. I will be going back to try to get one or two of the winter stocking of trout that started today.. I didn't catch anything today,, but I'm going to try again tomorrow.
Nov 23, 2020 · Robert MarshallOver all clean place, nice area to walk or fish. First time there and caught 10 bass 2 chain pickerel. One thing that sucks is if you fish from the banks the boat guys (90%) are A-holes. Hole lake to fish and they will go right where you are with no common curiosity to other anglers.

Jun 09, 2022 · Randy SuarezGreat little lake for paddling and fishing, relatively quiet and less traveled... Just make sure you are prepared for the very rough road in!
