Sohncke Square Introduce
Sohncke Square, located at the intersection of 58th Street, Woodside Avenue, and Roosevelt Avenue in Woodside, NY 11377, USA, is a small but significant urban plaza that serves as a focal point for the local community. Named in honor of Sergeant Carl R. Sohncke, a Woodside native who bravely served and was killed in action during World War I, this park holds a special place in the neighborhood's history and daily life.
The park is strategically positioned beneath the elevated 7 train line, which, while creating a distinct urban atmosphere and a constant hum of city life, also makes it an incredibly accessible location for commuters and residents alike. Its central location makes it a natural gathering spot, offering a brief respite in a busy transportation hub.
The environment of Sohncke Square is designed to be a functional and aesthetically pleasing urban space. While it may not boast vast green expanses like larger parks, recent and ongoing renovations have aimed to maximize its potential as a small town square. Historically, the park featured a brick courtyard with several benches, a common, no-frills setup for an urban plaza. However, the recent $2.25 million renovation project, spearheaded by the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, has brought significant improvements. These upgrades have focused on enhancing the park's seating areas, incorporating bistro-style outdoor tables, new plantings, and a flagpole. The goal is to provide a more inviting and comfortable space for relaxation, quick meals, or simply taking a break from the hustle and bustle. The plan also includes features such as a drinking fountain, bike racks, and improved security lighting, all contributing to a more user-friendly environment. Efforts are being made to increase the amount of green space within the park, with the introduction of real grass and more room for trees, creating a softer, more natural feel amidst the urban hardscape. The design is intended to provide clear pedestrian circulation routes and eliminate tripping hazards with new pavement throughout the square. While it is a smaller park at 0.04 acres, its thoughtful design aims to make it a valuable asset to the community.
As a Scenic Spot within the platform's category, Sohncke Square offers a unique blend of urban functionality and community charm. The services and amenities provided are geared towards enhancing the daily experience of local users. The newly installed bistro tables and benches offer convenient spots for people to enjoy a quick bite, such as a slice of pizza or a brown-bag lunch, transforming the plaza into an outdoor dining area. The presence of new lighting aims to make the park safer and more welcoming, particularly during the evening hours. While it is not a traditional park with playgrounds or vast recreational facilities (users looking for such amenities might find Doughboy Park nearby more suitable), Sohncke Square serves a different, yet equally important, purpose as a communal sitting area and a point of visual interest in the neighborhood. The plans also include electrical outlets, which could potentially support community events or provide convenient charging options for visitors.
One of the most distinctive features of Sohncke Square, and a highlight for many locals, is its role during the holiday season. The park traditionally hosts a festive display, centered around a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. This annual tradition transforms the square into a warm and "homey" focal point for the Woodside neighborhood. Although there have been periods of construction where the tree and displays were temporarily absent, the commitment to these holiday decorations remains a strong element of the park's identity and community appeal. This festive transformation makes Sohncke Square a must-visit destination for those seeking to immerse themselves in the local holiday spirit. The presence of flowering trees and various ground cover will add color and vibrancy to the space, especially during other seasons.
Promotional information for Sohncke Square often emphasizes its historical significance and its role as a revitalized community hub. The recent renovations represent a significant investment in improving the quality of life for Woodside residents, demonstrating a commitment to providing well-maintained public spaces. The park’s accessibility, being right by the 7 train, makes it an easy stop for anyone passing through. Local events, particularly the annual Christmas tree lighting, are key promotional opportunities that draw the community together and showcase the park's vibrant atmosphere. While some past reviews mention the park resembling a construction site, the completion of the renovation project is actively transforming it into the enhanced, inviting space that was envisioned. The focus is on offering a clean, safe, and pleasant environment for residents and commuters to pause, reflect, or simply enjoy a moment outdoors. The park’s small size makes it manageable and intimate, providing a contrast to larger, more bustling parks. As a place for quiet contemplation or a brief social interaction, Sohncke Square stands as a testament to the importance of urban green spaces, no matter how small, in fostering a sense of community and enhancing the urban landscape.

Sohncke Square Reviews
It's a nice looking little park 🏞️ in the neighborhood, with a Christmas tree looking, that sat in the center of the park. 🏞️ What I DO REALLY LOVE is when that tree🌲 is Decorated Beautifully & the Entire Display Makes the Woodside Neighborhood looked Very Homey to me. But as of NOW the Park looks like some kind of a Construction Site plus the tree 🎄 is gone too. 🥺☹️
Feb 07, 2024 · Victoria “ru.V. ru.” BeanVery bare-bones for a park: several benches in a brick courtyard. It's below the elevated 7 train so it's a loud place for conversation. There is not much here, so kind of a boring place for kids. There's no tables, but it is a nice place to eat a slice, rest or have a brown bag. In winter there's usually a holiday display. The Doughboy park up Woodside Ave is very close and offers all the things you'd expect from a park.
Mar 02, 2021 · Dane AnkerThis parks convenient and kind of pleasant. Theres times when it just is a bit seedy. I wouldn't count money or plan this as destination for a kids day at park. It's just benches and trees. Not unappealing the idea you'd go there is pretty situational. Not terrible but no amenities

Nov 03, 2024 · J OBe careful with this man yesterday 8/31/2024 at around 11:00 at night this man was at the Q32 whereabouts and when he passed by he took out his member and started doing his things which alarmed me and he got closer and behind a column where he was still leaning out with his thing and doing his atrocities, which called the police, be very careful since in that area it is very dark, a few steps below the church where the whereabouts are. I took photos of the Q32 and it crossed into the park and fled
