Its trails are renowned for their varied terrain, from gentle paths to more strenuous rock scrambles, ensuring there's something to suit different fitness levels and preferences. It's a place where the fresh air and stunning vistas truly rejuvenate the spirit, making it a perfect spot for a day trip or a regular hiking spot for New York locals.
One of the most notable aspects of the trails accessible from the Storm King Trailhead is the sheer beauty of the Hudson River. As you ascend, you’ll be treated to magnificent viewpoints that capture the majesty of the river winding through the mountains. This area truly exemplifies the natural splendor that lies just a short distance from the bustling city, offering a tranquil and invigorating outdoor experience.
The trails themselves are well-maintained, though some sections present a moderate to high challenge, incorporating significant rock scrambling and uphill climbs. This provides an excellent workout while immersing you in the raw beauty of the landscape. Many visitors speak of the incredible sense of accomplishment and the unparalleled views that make every step worthwhile.
For those planning a visit, it's highly recommended to arrive early, especially on weekends, as the Storm King Trailhead Parking Lot can fill up quickly. This popularity is a testament to the area’s appeal, so an early start ensures you secure a spot and can begin your adventure without delay. Be mindful that parking along the road outside the designated lot may result in tickets.
Furthermore, prepare appropriately for your hike. The terrain can be slippery in some areas due to smooth rock, and the uphill sections require good traction. Proper hiking footwear is essential to ensure both safety and comfort on the trails. Staying hydrated is also key, so bring plenty of water, especially for longer loops. Insect repellent is also advisable, particularly during warmer months.
Storm King State Park is truly a gem in the New York landscape, offering a refreshing contrast to urban life. Its accessibility and diverse trails make it an ideal spot for anyone in the New York region looking to connect with nature and enjoy a fantastic outdoor adventure.

Storm King Trailhead Parking Lot Reviews
Freaking awesome! High moderate trail. Lots of rock scrambling uphill. Not easy but not difficult. We did the 3.5 mile loop. Very scenic along the Hudson. Get there early for parking. We saw cars ticketed for parking along the road. Dog friendly, but felt sorry for the short-legged ones. Must've been tough with all the uphill rocks. Can be slippery in some areas from smooth rock. So worth it. Took 3.5 hours with a few scenic stops along the trail.
Oct 20, 2024 · Linda RDO NOT take the orange trail next to this parking lot, it randomly stops once you get to the top. It is not beginner friendly either and it requires physically climbing up rocks at one section but it leads you to the top of the mountain pretty quickly (around 15-25 mins). If you do decide to take it, I suggest once you get to the top, turn back and go the same way since that’s where it ends (climbing down WILL be challenging). I decided to keep going forward and started following the blue and yellow trail since on my map from empire pass, it looped back to the parking lot BUT IT DID NOT!!! I got lost for 2-3 hours, ran out of water, and my GPS couldn’t pick up where exactly I was. I ran into other hikers, who provided me water and another map. On their map, the orange trail WAS NOT THERE!!! Probably for the reason of getting lost, which happened to me. PLEASE follow the white trail, check the photos attached for your reference if you need a map. This is your warning NOT to get lost and bring bug spray.
Apr 16, 2024 · Emily BPretty good hiking trails, there are multiple paths and using a GPS trail map would help. Beware of caterpillars (they are everywhere) during late spring/early summer and protect your self. Overall it is pretty good.
Jun 09, 2024 · Derek ChenStormKing has been on my list for a long time, ever since I climbed Breakneck and looked across the river at StormKing. Today was the day I got it done. For a relatively short loop, it has great views, enough elevation and enough varying terrain to be very lovely.Go clockwise and just get the hard part out of the way. Over all moderate trail except for the beginning of you go clockwise. It's kinda steep and rocky. But I got the dog up no problem. If you take your time, you'll be fine.
Jun 12, 2023 · Tom HoosFirst time winter hiking and despite a cold 28 degree morning, it was a great hike. Rated as a moderate trail, in the winter should know it’s a hard trail with slippery and icy leaves making it easier to slip and slide and get hurt. Some sections of the trail was also icy and required careful maneuvering. There’s lots of rock climbing and hiking poles and boots with great traction would make your hike safer. Bring lots of water and snacks for fueling because you use up more energy compared to warmer weather hiking. Dogs are allowed on a leash and my 2 totally enjoyed this challenging hike. There are different trails, and although mostly well marked, highly recommend you plan ahead and use Google map or download a map from AllTrails, but cellular service is available throughout. Have fun and be safe.
