Wingate Park is named for George Wood Wingate (1840-1928), a Union general in the Civil War who was instrumental in co-founding the National Rifle Association (NRA). His dedication to promoting rifle shooting on a scientific basis and his deep interest in school athletics, which also led him to be a founder of the Public School Athletic League, are honored through the park's athletic opportunities. The land where the park now stands was once part of the Kingston Avenue Hospital. After the hospital was absorbed into Kings County Hospital Center in the 1950s, the former hospital buildings were demolished to make way for the construction of George W. Wingate High School in 1954, and the park officially opened in 1957. Originally known as Hawthorne Field and George Wingate High School Park, it was formally shortened to Wingate Park in 1987. Throughout its history, the park has seen improvements, including playground rebuilding in 2017, an adult fitness area addition, and rebuilt basketball courts in 2020, continually evolving to meet the community's needs.
Wingate Park is conveniently situated in the heart of Brooklyn, making it easily accessible for many New Yorkers. You'll find this expansive park located on Brooklyn Avenue, specifically between Winthrop Street and Rutland Road, within the 11203 zip code. This prime location places it within reach of several vibrant residential areas, including Crown Heights and Prospect Lefferts Gardens, allowing residents from these neighborhoods and beyond to enjoy its offerings.
Getting to Wingate Park is straightforward, thanks to Brooklyn's extensive public transportation network. While the park itself doesn't have a dedicated subway station named "Wingate Park," it is well-served by several MTA bus lines that run along major avenues in the vicinity. For those utilizing the subway, various lines connect to bus routes that will bring you directly to the park's doorstep. For specific bus routes and subway connections, it's always recommended to check the MTA website or a reliable transit app for the most up-to-date and personalized travel information. The park's multiple entrances also contribute to its accessibility, making it easy to enter from different points along Brooklyn Avenue, Winthrop Street, and Rutland Road.

Wingate Park Reviews
Fun place to take the kids to enjoy the track with scooters and bikes. Nice concerts in the summer. The adult men unfortunately use a portion of the park as an outdoor gym, complete with heavy marijuana smoking and drinking. The smell often carries over to the children's swing area. It's also unfortunate that the grass around and in the middle of the track is not well maintained.

Apr 16, 2025 · Jay BrownGreat track. But im seeing a lot of dogs around there. I don't see a dog park.
May 07, 2025 · Charmaine Thompson-KinneyVery good for the family to have fun , people there are very friendly and will treat you like family
Apr 03, 2025 · Roger AugustinThe field is not maintained, the track has uneven parts. Which can cause someone to injure themselves if they are not careful. Hope they do something about this ASAP.
