Blydenburgh Dog Park Area Introduce
For dog owners across the New York region, finding the perfect spot where our beloved canine companions can truly stretch their legs, socialize, and explore safely is always a top priority. On Long Island, one destination consistently stands out as a true gem: the Blydenburgh Dog Park Area in Smithtown. More than just a simple fenced enclosure, this area offers a multifaceted experience that caters to both dogs and their human companions, making it a highly valued resource for local New Yorkers.
Nestled within the expansive Blydenburgh County Park, the dog park area provides a unique blend of dedicated off-leash space and access to the park's broader natural beauty. Visitors often rave about its innovative design, particularly the "half of it is forest that is fenced in" feature, which one reviewer enthusiastically describes as "a perfect place for off leash training and a huge playground for the doggos!" This thoughtful design allows dogs to experience a more natural, stimulating environment than a typical open field, fostering both physical exercise and mental engagement.
Beyond the dedicated dog park, the surrounding Blydenburgh County Park offers an extensive network of trails, perfect for on-leash walks with your furry friend. While the landscape has recently seen significant changes due to the dam failure that drained Stump Pond (the large lake formerly in the park), the trails themselves remain a draw. Visitors have noted "Great views, easy hike" even amidst the changes, though caution is advised around the former lakebed due to "sinking mud" and new boundary gates put in place for safety. This adaptability highlights the park's commitment to visitor safety and enjoyment, even as nature reshapes its features.
Blydenburgh Dog Park Area is more than just a place to let your dog run; it’s a community hub where pet owners can connect, and dogs can thrive. It represents the best of Long Island's pet-friendly amenities, offering a safe, stimulating, and beautiful environment for dogs of all sizes and energy levels. This guide will delve into what makes the Blydenburgh Dog Park Area an essential destination for dog owners in the New York region.
The Blydenburgh Dog Park Area is strategically located within Blydenburgh County Park, at Veteran's Memorial Highway, Smithtown, NY 11788, USA. This address places it squarely within Suffolk County, Long Island, making it a convenient destination for dog owners residing throughout the island and those willing to make the journey from other parts of the New York metropolitan area.
Accessibility to the Blydenburgh Dog Park Area is primarily by car. Veteran's Memorial Highway provides direct and easy access to the sprawling Blydenburgh County Park. Upon entering the park, clear signage typically directs visitors to the designated dog park and its associated parking facilities. There is ample parking available, designed to accommodate the numerous visitors and their canine companions, ensuring a relatively stress-free arrival.
It is important for New Yorkers to be aware of potential seasonal parking fees. During peak seasons, typically from Memorial Day through Labor Day, Suffolk County Parks may charge an entry or parking fee, especially on weekends and holidays. However, it's often the case that access and parking are free on weekdays during the off-season. Checking the official Suffolk County Parks website for the most current fee schedule is always recommended to avoid any surprises upon arrival.
For those considering public transportation, reaching the Blydenburgh Dog Park Area can be more challenging. While the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) has a station in Smithtown, located nearby, the park itself is not directly served by frequent bus routes that would take you to the dog park entrance. Therefore, a taxi or ride-share service from the LIRR station would likely be necessary to complete the journey. Given the nature of the park and the typical need to transport dog supplies, driving remains the most practical and convenient option for most visitors to the Blydenburgh Dog Park Area. The park's setting within a natural preserve also means that while accessible, it maintains a sense of being a peaceful escape from more urban environments.
The Blydenburgh Dog Park Area, as part of the larger Blydenburgh County Park, offers a range of services designed to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and enriching experience for dogs and their owners.
Fenced Off-Leash Dog Run: The primary service is the expansive, fenced dog run, which includes a unique forested section. This allows dogs to play and train off-leash in a stimulating, natural environment, promoting both physical exercise and mental enrichment.
Designated Areas for Different Dog Sizes: While not explicitly stated for Blydenburgh, many well-designed dog parks within the Suffolk County Parks system feature separate areas for large and small dogs. This helps ensure safe play for canines of all sizes and temperaments. Visitors should check on-site signage for specific area designations.
Water Access for Dogs: The dog park typically provides water fountains or spigots for dogs, especially during warmer months, ensuring that pups stay hydrated during their playtime.
Waste Stations: Designated waste bag dispensers and trash receptacles are usually available within the dog park area, promoting cleanliness and responsible pet ownership.
Seating for Owners: Benches or seating areas are generally provided within the fenced dog run, allowing owners to relax comfortably while supervising their pets.
On-Leash Trail Access: Beyond the fenced dog park, the broader Blydenburgh County Park offers miles of multi-use trails where dogs are permitted on leash, allowing for extended walks and exploration of the natural surroundings.
Ranger Presence and Park Maintenance: As part of a county park, the Blydenburgh Dog Park Area benefits from regular maintenance by Suffolk County Parks staff, including trail upkeep and facility cleaning. Park rangers may also be present to ensure rules are followed and provide assistance.
Unique Fenced Forest Area: A standout feature is the truly distinctive fenced forest section within the off-leash dog park. This allows dogs to run and explore among trees, providing a more natural and stimulating environment than a typical open-field dog run. It's often highlighted as "a huge playground for the doggos" and perfect for "off-leash training."
Extensive Trail Access for On-Leash Walks: Beyond the fenced area, the Blydenburgh Dog Park Area provides direct access to the vast trail system of Blydenburgh County Park. These trails, known for "Great views, easy hike," offer ample opportunities for longer, on-leash walks, allowing owners and dogs to enjoy the diverse natural landscape, even if it takes "2 hours but took us 3 to finish."
Scenic Views and Natural Beauty: Despite the dramatic changes to Stump Pond, the park continues to offer beautiful natural scenery. The trails wind through woodlands and provide glimpses of the evolving landscape where the pond once stood, as well as the flowing Nissequogue River. The overall environment remains calming and picturesque.
Wildlife Spotting: The natural setting of Blydenburgh County Park means visitors, including those with dogs, often have the chance to spot local wildlife such as deer and various bird species along the trails. This adds an extra layer of natural interest to a visit.
Emphasis on Safety and Boundaries: Park management has proactively addressed changes due to the dam failure, putting in "boundary gates where lake was" to ensure safety from "sinking mud." This commitment to visitor and pet safety, though born from unfortunate circumstances, is a crucial highlight, showing care for the park's users.
Community Atmosphere: Dog parks naturally foster a sense of community. The Blydenburgh Dog Park Area is a place where local dog owners can meet, socialize, and share experiences, creating a welcoming environment for both humans and their pets.
As a public facility managed by Suffolk County Parks, the Blydenburgh Dog Park Area does not typically engage in commercial promotions, discounts, or special offers in the traditional retail sense. Its primary "offer" is the provision of a well-maintained and accessible space for dog recreation and owner enjoyment.
However, there are important points regarding cost-effectiveness and community benefits that can be considered "special offers" for New Yorkers:
Free Weekday Access (Off-Season): A significant benefit for locals is that parking and access to Blydenburgh County Park, including the dog park area, are often free on weekdays during the off-season (generally from after Labor Day through Memorial Day). This provides ample opportunity for cost-free enjoyment for regular visitors.
Suffolk County Green Key Card: For residents of Suffolk County, purchasing a Green Key Card offers discounted rates or waivers for park entry and parking fees, particularly during the peak season (Memorial Day to Labor Day). This annual or multi-year pass is a smart investment for frequent visitors to any Suffolk County Park, making the Blydenburgh Dog Park Area even more economical.
Community Events (Seasonal): While not exclusive to the dog park area itself, Blydenburgh County Park and the broader Suffolk County Parks system often host community events, nature programs, and sometimes even dog-related activities (like pet adoption events or dog training clinics) throughout the year. These are usually promoted on the Suffolk County Parks website and offer enhanced experiences, often at no or low cost.
No Fee for Dog Usage: Unlike some private dog parks or facilities, there is typically no separate fee charged specifically for bringing your dog to the Blydenburgh Dog Park Area beyond any standard park entry/parking fees that might apply.
To stay informed about current fee structures, operational updates, and any potential special events, it is highly recommended that New Yorkers check the official Suffolk County Parks website or contact the park directly.

Blydenburgh Dog Park Area Reviews
Normally great place to walk around with your kids and dogs . The day we went was very muddy unfortunately there was still alot of snow remains but still enjoyed our time there. They fortunately put a boundary gate where lake was because back in August when the storm came and destroyed the lake it was dangerous to walk on with sinking mud. So do not recommend to try to go around boundaries around former lake area.
Mar 23, 2025 · Dawn MaioranoGreat views, easy hike🌲 all trails says it about 2 hours but took us 3 to finish. There are canoes/ kayaks there that are available to rent for 10$ (cash only) and bring your id! Huge lake which we let our pup play in. There is also an amazing dog park here, where half of it is forest that is fenced in. I love that because it makes a perfect place for off leash training and a huge playground for the doggos!
Jun 01, 2024 · Sara TateUsed to pass this place all the time everyday on my way to my old job. It’s huge and beautiful! My dog had so much fun
May 28, 2025 · GLive this park. I've been going here all my life.So sad about Stump pond emptying out. Still the hiking trails are awesome.
Nov 12, 2024 · Patricia FamighettiProbably my favorite dog park on the island.. Decent sized space with open area but also woods in the park with a trail that wraps around. For the most part people are super friendly, everyonce in a while the vibe is off thou. There are community water bowls and a water spout/spicket to fill them. Two areas- one for 25 lb plus and one for under 25lb.. Its cool too be able to go for a hike after playing with friends or going down to the lake/pond to cool down on a hot day after running around
