The Fair Motel, situated right on Route 17, is one such establishment. Like any business that serves a wide range of customers, it has garnered varied feedback. This article will present a balanced overview of the Fair Motel, detailing its strategic location, the basic services it offers, and highlight key features and concerns based on actual customer reviews. We'll explore both the positive aspects, such as reported cleanliness and basic amenities, and critical issues raised by guests, such as noise and potential odors. The Fair Motel is strategically located at 255 NJ-17, Upper Saddle River, NJ 07458, USA. This address places it directly on Route 17, a major thoroughfare in Northern New Jersey. This location is a significant advantage for travelers who rely on this highway for their journeys, offering immediate access for those driving through the region. Upper Saddle River itself is a borough in Bergen County, known for its suburban character, and its proximity to other major routes and business centers.
Accessibility to the Fair Motel is primarily by car, given its location on a busy state highway. The motel typically offers on-site parking for guests, which is a fundamental amenity for roadside establishments and crucial for travelers with vehicles. For those navigating without a car, public transportation options directly to the motel might be limited. However, local bus routes often run along or near major highways like Route 17, potentially offering connections to nearby towns or train stations, though checking specific schedules and stops would be advisable. The direct highway access makes it a convenient overnight stop for those on longer road trips or individuals needing a quick, no-frills stay while conducting business or visiting attractions in Bergen County. Its location near the New York border also positions it well for travelers crossing state lines.

Features / Highlights:
- Convenient Location on Route 17: Directly accessible from a major state highway, making it easy for road travelers to locate and access.
- Basic In-Room Amenities: Rooms are equipped with a microwave and refrigerator, which can be convenient for guests, particularly for storing snacks or small meals.
- Cleanliness (Mixed Reviews): One review stated, "The room was clean and comfortable. Bed was comfy and the sheets were clean," indicating that some guests have positive experiences with cleanliness.
- Front Desk Responsiveness: A positive highlight was the front desk providing shampoo upon request, demonstrating a willingness to address immediate guest needs.
- Morning Coffee: "Coffee is provided in the office in the morning," offering a basic complimentary beverage for guests.
Concerns Noted in Reviews:
- Significant Noise from Route 17: A major concern, with one reviewer stating, "The smart owner built it 10 feet from the busiest and noisiest NJ 17. The door and window are not soundproof at all. It was impossible to sleep." This suggests a considerable challenge for light sleepers.
- Persistent Odor in Room: "The smell in the room is disgusting and heavy (attendant said: non-smoked! room). No fresh air." This indicates a potential issue with ventilation or lingering odors, contradicting the "non-smoked" claim for one guest.
- Comfort/Suitability for Living (Mixed): One reviewer concluded, "The place is not suitable for living and sleeping," contrasting with another who found the "room was clean and comfortable" and "Bed was comfy." This suggests variability in guest experience or room condition.
- Lack of Central Air/Window Units: While not explicitly stated as a negative, the absence of central air and reliance on window units might impact overall comfort and noise levels for some guests.
- Management Responsiveness (Implied): The comment about the attendant not offering a different room might suggest a lack of proactive problem-solving for guest comfort issues.
As a roadside motel, the Fair Motel typically operates on a straightforward pricing model without complex promotions or loyalty programs. However, potential "promotions" for travelers often manifest in its core offering:
- Competitive Pricing: Motels like the Fair Motel usually aim to offer more affordable rates compared to larger hotel chains, making them a budget-friendly option for cost-conscious travelers. This is a continuous "offer" for those seeking value.
- Direct Booking Simplicity: Often, direct bookings (by phone or walk-in) with motels can sometimes yield better rates than third-party online travel agencies, depending on occupancy and specific policies.
- Last-Minute Availability: Motels can sometimes be a reliable option for last-minute or spontaneous travel when other hotels are fully booked or have higher rates.
It's always recommended to call the Fair Motel directly at the provided phone number to inquire about their best available rates for your specific dates. While you won't find a "buy one get one free" deal, the fundamental offering of an accessible, budget-conscious stay is its primary and ongoing appeal for travelers in New Jersey. Any seasonal price adjustments would be handled directly by the motel's management based on demand and local events.

The Fair Motel in Upper Saddle River, NJ, presents a pragmatic option for locals or those visiting our New Jersey region, particularly for specific travel needs. Its primary suitability for locals lies in its clear positioning as a budget-friendly, no-frills accommodation directly on a major highway. For someone needing a very quick, convenient, and affordable overnight stay while traveling along Route 17, or for those whose priority is simply a bed and basic amenities, the Fair Motel can serve this purpose.
The positive review highlighting "The room was clean and comfortable. Bed was comfy and the sheets were clean. Microwave and refrigerator are provided" indicates that for some guests, the motel successfully fulfills its core function of providing a clean and basic place to rest. The provision of coffee in the morning and a responsive front desk for basic requests (like shampoo) also adds to its functional appeal. However, locals considering this motel, whether for themselves or out-of-town guests, must be aware of the significant concerns raised, particularly regarding the "disgusting and heavy" smell and the "impossible to sleep" noise level from Route 17, which one reviewer found unbearable. This suggests that while it might be suitable for travelers accustomed to roadside motel environments or those who are heavy sleepers, it might not be ideal for everyone seeking a peaceful night's rest. Ultimately, its suitability for locals boils down to a balance between budget and basic utility versus potential comfort drawbacks, especially related to noise and air quality. It serves as a stark reminder that in budget accommodations, managing expectations based on factual reviews is key.

The place is not suitable for living and sleeping. The smart owner built it 10 feet from the busiest and noisiest NJ 17.The door and window are not soundproof at all. It was impossible to sleep. The attendant did not at least offer a room on the other side of the motel, but I'm not sure that helped at all.The smell in the room is disgusting and heavy (attendant said: non-smoked! room). No fresh air.So $100 wasted for not getting rest after a busy day and against another busy day.Is there any state/federal control here?11/12/2024. Room #3
Dec 14, 2024 · Aldo CubThe room was clean and comfortable. Bed was comfy and the sheets were clean. Microwave and refrigerator are provided in the room. No shampoo in the room..no problem I asked at the front desk and it was provided to me. As far as some of the reviews were saying they heard the cars on route 17, I can honestly say that I did not hear the traffic from my room. Coffee is provided in the office in the morning. I would recommend the Fair Motel.
May 19, 2019 · Rosina RagusaHousekeeper was very very nice. But husband almost fell in the tub it was slippery from what ever they used to clean with. I was told 75.00 get here cause I needed check in little early so I was charged 90.00. Front desk people need to service with a smile if I am giving my money allot at that I want service with a smile. The housekeeper was the best part of the stay.
Apr 20, 2018 · Carol ShiverLove this place! Spacious rooms. Decent price clean. Drive right up to your room and offload a few feet away from your door! T.v needs work to little channel zNo wake up call from front desk. Alarm clock in room but no instructions on how to use. No soap in room light in needs to be improved no dimmer switches it's either bright or total darkness no in between.
Sep 05, 2019 · Peter LoreA quality stay for a great rate. The rooms are spacious, the showers are hot, and the bed is great. To top it off, there are four or five WiFi access points to choose from. One might think the proximity to Rt 17 would be detrimental but the road noise was barely perceptible even on the south side. Were I on the west side, I would expect zero noise.
