Gillie Park Introduce
For those of us in the New York region, especially here in Westchester County, finding a versatile park that caters to both athletic pursuits and family-friendly entertainment is a true asset. Gillie Park in White Plains stands out as just such a place. Known for its meticulously maintained sports fields and its exciting annual community events, Gillie Park is a cornerstone of outdoor recreation in the area. Whether you're an athlete looking for a great game or a parent seeking unique activities for your young ones, this park offers something for everyone, right here in our backyard.
Gillie Park is more than just a collection of fields; it's a vibrant community hub. While its clean and smooth baseball and softball fields draw in leagues and teams, the park also creates memorable experiences for families, most notably through its highly anticipated "Truck Day." This blend of active sports facilities and engaging community events makes Gillie Park a vital part of White Plains' recreational landscape. It’s a testament to how local spaces can cater to diverse interests, fostering both athletic achievement and childhood wonder.
Gillie Park is conveniently situated at 85 Gedney Way, White Plains, NY 10605, USA. This address places it within a well-established and accessible part of White Plains, making it easy to reach for residents from various neighborhoods and surrounding communities within Westchester County. Gedney Way is a known thoroughfare, offering straightforward access without navigating overly complex city streets.
For those driving, Gillie Park’s location allows for relatively easy access from major roads that serve White Plains, such as Mamaroneck Avenue, Westchester Avenue, and also provides connections to larger highways like the Bronx River Parkway and I-287 (Cross Westchester Expressway). While parking can be challenging during peak times, especially when multiple events are in progress (e.g., softball, baseball, and tennis), there is dedicated parking available. Visitors are advised to plan their arrival with some extra time to account for potential parking difficulties, particularly on busy event days. The park's accessibility via personal vehicle is a significant advantage for many New Yorkers traveling to and from games or events.
While direct public transportation routes immediately adjacent to the park might require a short walk, White Plains is a major transportation hub. The Metro-North Railroad station in downtown White Plains provides excellent connectivity to Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan and other points along the Harlem Line. Additionally, the Westchester Bee-Line Bus System offers extensive service throughout White Plains. Depending on the specific bus routes, it may be possible to reach Gillie Park with a combination of bus travel and a brief walk, though driving remains the most common and often convenient mode of transport for park visitors, especially those carrying sports equipment or with young children.
Gillie Park primarily serves as a recreational hub, offering a range of facilities and a key annual event that appeal to a wide audience. Based on visitor reviews, the core "services" provided by the park include:
Baseball/Softball Fields: The park boasts multiple, well-maintained fields that are consistently described as "great" and "kept clean and smooth." These fields are suitable for various leagues, practices, and casual games.
Tennis Courts: In addition to the diamond sports, Gillie Park also features tennis facilities, expanding its appeal to different types of athletes and recreational users.
Annual "Truck Day" Event: A highly popular and unique offering, this event allows younger children (typically under 10) to explore and interact with various large vehicles like garbage trucks, excavators, and firetrucks, even allowing them to operate hoses and honk horns. It’s a significant draw for families.
Open Green Spaces: While not explicitly detailed, parks of this nature often include general grassy areas for informal play, picnicking, or simply relaxing.
Parking Facilities: Dedicated parking is available for park users, though it can become congested during peak event times.
Gillie Park stands out for several key features that contribute to its popularity and utility for the White Plains community:
Excellently Maintained Sports Fields: The baseball and softball fields are consistently lauded for their cleanliness and smooth surfaces, making them ideal for competitive play and practice. This commitment to maintenance is a significant draw for local sports leagues and teams.
The Unforgettable "Truck Day": This annual event is a huge hit, particularly with younger children (ages 3-10). It provides a rare hands-on opportunity for kids to get into and interact with large vehicles like garbage trucks, excavators, and firetrucks, including exciting activities like putting out a "fake fire" with a real hose. It’s a highlight on the White Plains family calendar.
Diverse Athletic Offerings: Beyond baseball and softball, the presence of tennis courts ensures that the park caters to a broader range of athletic interests, making it a versatile sports complex.
Family-Friendly Environment: While it hosts serious athletic events, the inclusion of the "Truck Day" and the general welcoming atmosphere make it a great place for families to spend time outdoors.
Community Hub: The park serves as a meeting point for local sports teams and families, fostering community engagement through shared recreational experiences.
Important Amenities (or lack thereof, to note): Visitors should be aware that there are no food stands or significant shade available at the fields. This knowledge helps visitors prepare by bringing their own water, snacks, and sun protection, which is a practical tip for ensuring a comfortable visit.
Parking Considerations: While parking is available, the challenge during multiple concurrent events is a key feature to note, prompting visitors to plan ahead and allow ample time.
As a municipal park, Gillie Park does not typically run commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the retail sense, as it’s a public facility maintained for the community. Access to the park and its various fields (when not reserved) is generally free or available through city permitting processes for leagues and organized events.
However, the most significant "special offer" Gillie Park provides is its unique annual event:
Annual "Truck Day": This highly anticipated free (or low-cost, depending on city event policies) community event is arguably the park's biggest "promotion." It’s an invaluable experience for young children, offering hands-on interaction with large vehicles that they typically only see from afar. This event alone provides tremendous value and entertainment for families in the White Plains area, attracting large crowds annually.
For information on field reservations, league schedules, or the exact dates and any associated costs for the annual "Truck Day," it’s always best to contact the White Plains Department of Parks & Recreation directly. They are the primary source for current programming, event schedules, and facility use policies.

Gillie Park Reviews
Park is nice. I am speaking for the softball/baseball fields & parking. The fields are great and always kept clean and smooth, be forewarned there is no shade so if it’s hot bring an umbrella to cover you. To continue off of this there are also no food stands here so make sure you pack water and snacks. As for parking it’s not terrible if people would park correctly which is a problem when they pull too far into one spot and take up a section of another spot. When multiple events are going on softball/baseball & tennis parking is very hard so would say give yourself time to get there. Otherwise decent park!
Jun 04, 2024 · Janelyn MarieThere is a "truck day" here every year. If you have younger kids (I'd say under 10) this is an awesome thing to do. They get to ride in the garbage truck, get into excavators, firetrucks (and actually put out the fake fire with the real hose), honk the horns, etc. Huge hit with my boys, 3 and 5 yo.

Sep 15, 2020 · ashish goelThis is a fantastic park in White Plains in the Gedney section of the neighborhood. It has beautiful fields, baseball parks, clay tennis courts, children's area and plenty of parking. If you are a resident of White Plains, I highly recommend getting a permit to use these facilities. There is also a couple of nice restaurants across the street on Gedney Way.If you have the opportunity to enjoy this park as a resident or guest, I highly encourage time spent here with the family. Have fun. Just contact the White Plains Department of Parks Recreation. Find out information on line too.
Oct 26, 2018 · C HThere are baseball and softball fields here. It is well kept. The bleachers could be more secure. They are wobbly in some parts. There is ample parking.
