Holtsville animal park Introduce
The Holtsville Ecology Site and Animal Preserve, often affectionately known as the Holtsville Animal Park, is a remarkable 'Scenic Spot' located at 249 Buckley Rd, Holtsville, NY 11742, USA. This extensive facility, managed by the Town of Brookhaven Highway Department, stands as a testament to environmental transformation, having been rehabilitated from a former landfill site into a thriving recreational and educational haven. It offers a unique blend of wildlife encounters, outdoor activities, and ecological education, making it a popular destination for local users and visitors seeking affordable and engaging experiences on Long Island.
The environment of the Holtsville Ecology Site is diverse and inviting. What was once a landfill, closed in 1974, has been meticulously re-vegetated and developed into a multi-faceted park. The animal preserve itself features a collection of over 100 injured or non-releasable wild and farm animals, housed in various enclosures designed to mimic their natural habitats where possible. Visitors can expect to see a wide range of species, including notable animals like bobcats, buffalo, bald eagles, llamas, peacocks, and even the famous groundhog "Holtsville Hal." The walkways within the animal preserve are paved, making it accessible, though some sections have inclines. Benches are conveniently placed throughout for rest. Beyond the animal exhibits, the site encompasses expansive green spaces, picnic areas with tables, and a dedicated playground for children, offering ample opportunities for outdoor recreation and relaxation. The atmosphere is generally lively and family-friendly, especially on weekends, but still manages to feel uncrowded, as noted by some visitors. The overall setting is clean and well-maintained, presenting a pleasant backdrop for a day out.
The services offered at the Holtsville Ecology Site and Animal Preserve are extensive and cater to a wide range of interests. A key service is the free admission to the animal preserve, a significant draw for families. While entry to the animal park itself is free, there is a modest parking fee of $5 per car. For those wishing to interact more closely with certain animals, feed machines are available, typically dispensing food for goats and ducks for a small fee (e.g., a quarter). The site also features a triple pool complex, offering a refreshing escape during warmer months, though there is an admission fee for pool access. An exercise trail with a fitness course spans 1.2 miles, providing a scenic route for walking, jogging, rollerblading, or cycling. Picnic areas are abundant, allowing visitors to bring their own meals, though outside food for the animals is not permitted due to their specific dietary needs.
Educational services are a cornerstone of the Holtsville Ecology Site. The Ecology Center provides insights into the local ecosystem and the importance of conservation through interactive displays and guided tours. Various educational programs are offered, particularly during the summer, including workshops for children on animal care, farm animals, and cold-blooded creatures. For example, "A Day with an Animal Caretaker" allows children to spend time with staff as they feed and care for the animals, while "Fun on the Farm" teaches about farm animal husbandry. Guided and behind-the-scenes tours of the animal preserve are also available by appointment for groups. Furthermore, the site promotes sustainable living practices by offering free compost and wood chips to Town of Brookhaven residents, and operates greenhouses where visitors can learn about various plant species. Recycling services are also available on-site for cardboard, paper, glass, plastic, and aluminum cans.
The features of the Holtsville Ecology Site and Animal Preserve make it a comprehensive recreational and educational destination. Its most prominent feature is undoubtedly the diverse collection of animals, which includes both wild animals that are unreleasable due to injury and various farm animals. Each animal habitat typically includes informative plaques detailing the species, its origin, and why it resides at the preserve. The triple pool complex is a significant amenity for summer visitors, providing a large swimming area for families. The expansive playground adjacent to the picnic areas offers a safe and engaging space for children to play. The exercise trail provides a dedicated pathway for physical activity within a natural setting. The greenhouses offer a unique opportunity to learn about horticulture and plant cultivation. Additionally, the Ecology Site is home to meeting rooms and offers opportunities for private events and photography, with an online application process for permits. Restrooms are available near the playground and picnic areas, and are multi-stall and handicapped-accessible. The entire facility is designed to be wheelchair and stroller friendly, ensuring accessibility for all visitors.
Promotional information for the Holtsville Ecology Site and Animal Preserve consistently highlights its accessibility and educational value. The primary promotional message is often centered around the free admission to the animal preserve, emphasizing its affordability as a family outing. The nominal parking fee is usually mentioned as the only cost of entry. Summer programs for children, such as "A Day with an Animal Caretaker" and "Fun on the Farm," are frequently promoted through local news and the Town of Brookhaven's official website, encouraging pre-registration due to their popularity. The opportunity to feed certain animals for a small fee is another popular feature that is often highlighted. The environmental rehabilitation of the former landfill into a vibrant park is also a point of pride and promotion, showcasing the Town of Brookhaven's commitment to sustainability. The site's year-round operation, with varying hours depending on the season, is communicated to ensure visitors are aware of accessibility. The Holtsville Ecology Site and Animal Preserve is marketed as an ideal place for educational tours, scout groups, and general family recreation, positioning it as a valuable "Scenic Spot" that offers both entertainment and learning opportunities for the community.

Holtsville animal park Reviews
a+ experience with kids that I can’t believe is free! There is a fabulous park nearby as well. We had a blast and highly recommend!
Nov 01, 2024 · Brittany NIt's free to get in you just have to pay $5 to park. Lots of cool animals that you can feed (I think it's a quarter for food) There's also a park for the kids to play and picnic area. There's also a pool but I'm not sure how much that costs. Definitely an awesome place to take the kids. My daughter and son loved it.
Aug 01, 2018 · Adam VolpeThis is a great place to visit. It's filled with rescued animals who can't be released. The playground is nice. I wish they had a toddler section of the playground and the wood chips are annoying. In the warmer weather there are bees in the gazebo area.
