Levy Playground Introduce
For New Yorkers in Staten Island, particularly those residing in and around the historic Port Richmond neighborhood, Levy Playground stands as a significant local amenity. More than just a patch of green space, this playground has a rich history, serving the community for decades and undergoing extensive renovations to meet the evolving needs of its residents. It's a place where children can burn off energy, families can gather, and neighbors can connect, offering a vital outdoor escape in a densely populated urban environment. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of Levy Playground, highlighting its features, accessibility, and why it remains a cherished spot for locals.
Levy Playground holds a special place in Staten Island's history, named in honor of Abraham Levy, the first serviceman from Richmond County to die in World War I. Originally acquired by the City of New York in 1909 and formally dedicated as Abraham Levy Memorial Park in 1937, the site has been meticulously developed and maintained by NYC Parks. Through various renovations, including significant upgrades in 1996, 2000, and particularly as part of the Community Parks Initiative in 2018, Levy Playground has been transformed into a modern, accessible, and engaging recreational space. Its evolution reflects a commitment to providing high-quality public spaces for all New Yorkers.
Levy Playground is conveniently situated at the intersection of Jewett Avenue and Castleton Avenue in the Port Richmond area of Staten Island, New York. This central location makes it easily accessible for residents of surrounding neighborhoods. For those relying on public transportation, various local bus routes serve the area, with stops just a short walk from the playground. If you're driving, street parking may be available in the vicinity, though it's always advisable to check local parking regulations. Its position within a well-established residential area means it’s often within walking distance for many families, encouraging impromptu visits and daily outdoor activity. The playground's accessibility is further enhanced by its inclusion of ADA-compliant features, ensuring that visitors of all abilities can enjoy the facilities.
Public Restrooms: The playground is equipped with public restrooms, providing a convenient facility for visitors during their time at the park. These facilities are designed to be wheelchair-accessible, enhancing comfort for all users.

While ramps and mobility transfer systems may not be present in all areas, efforts have been made to ensure inclusive play opportunities.
Companion Seating: Benches with backs and armrests, and space between benches for wheelchair users, are integrated into the design, allowing for comfortable and inclusive seating arrangements.
Inclusive Play Elements: The playground aims to provide sensory-friendly spaces and multi-sensory play experiences, incorporating auditory, tactile, and visual elements to cater to children with sensory impairments or autism spectrum disorders.
Green Infrastructure (Rain Gardens): As part of its recent upgrades, Levy Playground has incorporated green infrastructure, specifically rain gardens. These innovative features help manage stormwater runoff, reduce flooding, and contribute to a healthier local environment, making the park not just a recreational space but also an ecological asset.
As a public park managed by NYC Parks, Levy Playground does not typically offer commercial promotions or special discounts in the traditional sense. Its primary "offer" is free and open access to its facilities for all members of the community. However, NYC Parks often hosts free events, programs, and activities across its parks network, which may include Levy Playground. These can range from seasonal festivals and sports clinics to educational workshops and community gatherings. To stay informed about any upcoming events at Levy Playground or other NYC Parks locations, it is recommended to regularly check the official NYC Parks website or local community boards for announcements. These events provide excellent opportunities for families to engage with their local park and community without any cost.

Levy Playground Reviews
There are always adults here smoking weed, drinking and acting ghetto. The kids are no better. They have nasty mouths and no consideration for the smaller children. It's not surprising once you see who's raising them. I unfortunately live close by, but try to avoid it when it gets crowded. Even when it's empty, there's usually someone smoking in the bathroom or on the benches right outside the gate.
Mar 23, 2025 · Gabriella LeeSmall cute playground but dirty neighborhood I wanted to check out different playground on the island and thought maybe its nice but this side of the island is never good never again.
Aug 07, 2022 · Irish VThe Helen Settles Basketball Tournament is held here every year for community athletes and Special Olympians to play together!!
Aug 21, 2019 · Freda YoungTo anyone that is concerned about the behavior of others such as little kids or bad parents.. understand this is a public park. U didn’t pay to be here so appreciate the fact your kids are happy and not care about how others are doing or what they are doing.. mind your business. Like someone in these reviews said they felt unsafe and wanted police there.. it’s not worth there time so just mind your own business.
Jun 12, 2024 · Anthony Arowolo Jr.Some of the park is under construction at the moment, but it is still well worth the visit. The water view is beautiful. Great for all ages. A stand out feature is definitely the "fish carousel." Even if you're not a child that could ride it, it's really nice to visit- looks just like a large scale aquarium, especially in the evening with the glass enclosure lit up in blue.
