Mills Reservation Parking Lot

31 Normal Ave, Cedar Grove, NJ 07009, USA

4.0
Parked in the Mills Lot which connects all trails. All are clearly marked except the blue trail coming down could use a few more blazes. Great view from the top of NYC. Walked up the red trail then connected over to blue and walked blue back to the lot. There is a great, much clearer view of NYC halfway down the blue trail on the way back. Saw lots of wildlife. Def wear tick spray and good shoes. Trails are mostly rocky. No bathrooms on site. - Mel

Mills Reservation Parking Lot Introduce

Introduction / Overview

For those of us living in New Jersey, particularly around Cedar Grove and Montclair, Mills Reservation stands as a treasured natural escape right on our doorstep. This 157.15-acre county park, meticulously maintained by the Essex County Park Commission, offers a remarkable blend of challenging trails, serene woodlands, and truly unforgettable panoramic views. What began as a land donation in 1952 from David and Ella Mills of the Davella Mills Foundation, with design input from the renowned Olmsted Brothers, has evolved into a vital green space preserving the natural beauty of the First Watchung Mountain. It’s a place where you can quickly feel miles away from the suburban bustle, even though you’re just a short drive from home.

Mills Reservation is celebrated by locals for its diverse offerings. Whether you're an avid hiker seeking a vigorous workout, a nature enthusiast hoping to spot local wildlife, or simply looking for a quiet spot to clear your head and enjoy some fresh air, this park delivers. It’s more than just a collection of trees and paths; it’s a dynamic outdoor environment that changes with the seasons, offering new experiences with every visit. From the vibrant greens of spring and summer to the fiery hues of autumn and the tranquil stillness of a winter wonderland, Mills Reservation consistently provides a compelling reason to step outside and explore.

Location and Accessibility

The primary entry point and convenient access to Mills Reservation is through its main parking lot located at 31 Normal Ave, Cedar Grove, NJ 07009, USA. This central location serves as the hub from which all the park’s various trails branch out, making it an ideal starting point for your adventure. Nestled atop the First Watchung Mountain, the park straddles the municipalities of Cedar Grove and Montclair, ensuring its accessibility for a wide range of local residents.

Getting to the Mills Reservation Parking Lot is straightforward from most areas in Essex County. The parking lot itself is a crucial amenity, as it provides the necessary infrastructure for visitors to embark on their hikes. However, it's a popular spot, especially on weekends, so it's a common observation among local users that securing a parking spot can sometimes be a challenge. Arriving earlier in the day or during off-peak hours can often help ensure a smoother parking experience. Once parked, the trailhead is immediately accessible, connecting you directly to the network of marked trails that weave through the reservation. The park's strategic position on the Watchung Mountain also means that while it offers stunning views, some trails do involve inclines and rocky terrain, so proper footwear is highly recommended for a safe and enjoyable experience.

Services Offered

While Mills Reservation is primarily a natural preserve focused on passive recreation, it "offers" a variety of experiences through its maintained environment and natural features:

  • Extensive Network of Hiking Trails: The park features a comprehensive system of walking and jogging trails, including five main marked trails (Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, and White/multi-use) ranging from 0.5 to 3.5 miles in length, and numerous smaller, interconnected paths. These trails accommodate various difficulty levels, from easy strolls to more challenging, rocky ascents.
  • Access to the Lenape Trail: A segment of the 36-mile Lenape Trail, marked with yellow blazes, passes through Mills Reservation, allowing hikers to connect to a broader regional trail network across Essex County.
  • Scenic Overlooks: A major highlight is the access to stunning high-point outlooks, including Quarry Point, which provides breathtaking panoramic views of the New York City skyline, especially clear halfway down the blue trail.
  • Wildlife Observation: The diverse wooded environment is home to various wildlife, offering opportunities for bird watching (it's a significant hawk-watching site, with the Montclair Hawk Lookout), and spotting other local fauna.
  • Year-Round Enjoyment: The park is suitable for walking and hiking throughout all seasons, with some locals even daring to try sunrise and night hikes.
  • Pet-Friendly Environment: Leashed dogs are welcome on the trails, making it a popular spot for pet owners to enjoy outdoor time with their furry companions (remember to clean up after your pet).

Features / Highlights

Mills Reservation stands out as a premier local park due to several key features and highlights that draw residents back repeatedly:

  • Spectacular NYC Skyline Views: Arguably the most iconic feature, the overlooks at Quarry Point and along certain sections of the blue trail offer unparalleled vistas of the New York City skyline. These breathtaking views provide a dramatic contrast to the tranquil natural surroundings and are a favorite spot for contemplation and photography.
  • Diverse and Challenging Trails: As noted by local users, the trails, while generally well-marked (with a few exceptions on some lesser-used segments), offer a variety of experiences. Many are quite rocky, providing a good challenge for hikers and requiring sturdy footwear. The trails range from moderately difficult to relatively easy, ensuring there's a path suitable for different fitness levels and preferences. The park’s 19 hike trails total approximately 11 miles, including the 2.1-mile main loop.
  • Abundant Wildlife and Birdwatching Opportunities: The 157-acre wooded area is a rich habitat for local wildlife. Birdwatchers particularly flock to Mills Reservation, as it's a nationally recognized hawk-watching site, a crucial flyway for migratory birds, including various raptors like hawks, ospreys, and even bald eagles.
  • Sense of Seclusion and Nature Immersion: Despite its proximity to urban centers, the dense woods and varied terrain of Mills Reservation provide a genuine sense of being "out of the room" and immersed in nature. The fresh air and natural sounds create a peaceful atmosphere, ideal for de-stressing and enjoying the outdoors.
  • Historical Context: The park's land was specifically preserved in its natural state thanks to the Davella Mills Foundation, with design elements by the esteemed Olmsted Brothers, adding a layer of historical significance to its natural beauty. The concrete circle at Quarry Point even has a fascinating history, rumored to have been a WWII searchlight platform.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a county park under the purview of the Essex County Park Commission, Mills Reservation, including its parking lot, operates on a principle of public access rather than commercial promotions. Therefore, you won't find traditional "special offers" or "discounts" for entry, as the park is free to use for all visitors.

However, the "promotions" that might be relevant to locals include free public programs and events sometimes hosted by the Essex County Parks Department or local environmental organizations. These can include:

  • Guided Hikes: Occasionally, guided walks focusing on birdwatching, local flora, or historical aspects of the park are offered.
  • Environmental Education Programs: While not directly at the parking lot, nearby nature centers or park system initiatives might offer free educational events relevant to the reservation's ecosystem.
  • Volunteer Opportunities: For those looking to give back, there are sometimes opportunities to participate in trail maintenance or park cleanup efforts, which offer a unique way to experience the park and contribute to its preservation.

The best way for New Jersey locals to stay informed about any such free public programs or events that enhance the Mills Reservation experience is to regularly check the official Essex County Parks website or local community calendars and environmental group listings. These initiatives represent the true "value" beyond mere access, fostering a deeper connection between the community and this cherished natural space.
