Mills Reservation Introduce
Nestled within the vibrant communities of Cedar Grove and Montclair, New Jersey, you'll find a true local gem: Mills Reservation. This expansive 157.15-acre county park, maintained by the Essex County Park Commission, offers a serene and invigorating escape into nature right in our backyard. More than just a collection of trees and trails, Mills Reservation is a carefully preserved natural space designed to provide residents with a haven for outdoor activity, relaxation, and appreciation of the natural world. It’s a testament to the community’s commitment to green spaces, offering a diverse landscape that includes both lush deciduous woodlands and vital wetlands. For those seeking fresh air, a good workout, or simply a moment of peace away from the everyday hustle, Mills Reservation provides an accessible and rewarding experience. Its historical roots also add to its unique charm; the land was donated in 1952 by David and Ella Mills of the Davella Mills Foundation, ensuring its preservation for public enjoyment, with its design influenced by the renowned Olmsted Brothers.
Mills Reservation is conveniently situated at the intersection of Normal Ave and Reservoir Dr in Cedar Grove, NJ 07009, making it highly accessible for residents across Essex County and beyond. Its location atop the First Watchung Mountain, the easternmost of the three Watchung ridges, contributes to its unique topography and stunning vistas. Whether you're coming from Montclair, Verona, or other surrounding towns, reaching the park is straightforward. For those driving, there is a parking area available, though it’s worth noting, as some local users have pointed out, that parking can be a bit challenging, especially during peak weekend hours. Planning to arrive earlier in the day or during off-peak times might provide a smoother experience. The park’s primary entrance is at Normal Avenue and Reservoir Drive, and there are several other access points along its perimeter.
The park's integration with the broader Lenape Trail system further enhances its accessibility for avid hikers and those looking to connect with other natural areas in the region. While some areas are relatively flat and easy to navigate, other sections present more moderate challenges, providing something for every fitness level. It’s also important to be aware that while the park is well-loved, some areas, particularly the smaller trails, might have uneven terrain. The balance of accessibility and natural ruggedness makes Mills Reservation a truly dynamic outdoor destination.
While Mills Reservation is primarily a natural preserve, it offers a range of informal "services" through its maintained environment, catering to various outdoor pursuits:
- Extensive Hiking and Walking Trails: The park boasts numerous trails, including five moderate difficulty levels ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 miles. There are four major trails and many smaller, interconnecting paths, offering a variety of routes for a quick stroll or a more extended hike. The main loop is approximately 2.1 miles and is considered suitable for most hikers.
- Scenic Overlooks and Viewpoints: A significant draw is the cliff overlooking the New York City skyline, particularly at Quarry Point. This spot provides breathtaking views, perfect for photography or simply enjoying a moment of quiet contemplation.
- Bird Watching Opportunities: The reservation is known as an excellent spot for bird watching. Its preserved open spaces and diverse habitats attract a variety of migratory birds, including warblers in the spring and hawks in the fall, making it a popular destination for ornithologists and nature enthusiasts.
- Nature Immersion: Visitors can enjoy fresh air and immerse themselves in the natural surroundings, escaping the urban environment. The varied terrain and dense foliage provide a true sense of being "out of the room."
- Dog-Friendly Environment: Many locals enjoy walking their dogs within the reservation, though it’s important to remember that New Jersey has leash laws, and enforcement may occur.
Mills Reservation stands out for several key features that make it a favorite among New Jersey locals:
- Panoramic NYC Skyline Views: The highly acclaimed scenic overlook, often referred to as Quarry Point, provides unparalleled views of the New York City skyline. This striking juxtaposition of natural beauty and urban sprawl is a highlight for many visitors and a popular photo opportunity.
- Varied Trail System: With approximately 19 hike trails totaling around 11 miles, ranging from easy to moderate difficulty, there's a path for everyone. Some trails offer a gentle walk on well-worn paths, while others present more challenging, rocky, and rooted terrain, making them ideal for experienced hikers or those seeking a more strenuous workout. The trails are generally well-maintained, though some smaller paths may be uneven.
- The Lenape Trail Connection: A 1.5-mile segment of the 34-mile Lenape Trail (marked with yellow blazes) passes through Mills Reservation, allowing hikers to connect to a larger regional trail network and explore further.
- Rich Biodiversity: The 157-acre expanse is home to diverse plant life, including deciduous woodlands, and is a noted habitat for various animal species, particularly birds. This makes it an ideal spot for nature observation and photography.
- Peaceful Atmosphere: Despite its popularity, the reservation often provides a sense of tranquility and solitude, allowing visitors to disconnect from daily stresses and reconnect with nature.
As a county park, Mills Reservation does not typically offer commercial promotions or special offers in the traditional sense. Its primary "offer" is the free and open access to its natural beauty and recreational opportunities for all residents and visitors. However, it's worth noting that the Essex County Park System and local nature groups sometimes host free guided hikes, bird-watching events, or educational programs within the reservation. These events, often announced through local community calendars or the Essex County Parks website, provide unique opportunities to learn more about the park's ecology and history. Staying updated with the Essex County Parks official website or local community listings is the best way to discover any such public programs that enhance the park experience.

Mills Reservation Reviews
Easy access to 5 moderate difficult levels trails, 0.5 to 1.5 miles range, finish one cycle within 2 hours in most cases. Fresh air and good view at the top. Good luck on parking during weekend.
Nov 06, 2023 · dragon wukongBest experience going to an outdoor adventure!! Perfect place for hiking, lots of fresh air, surrounded by nature, and overall amazing place to spend time out of the room. Needs more parking spots, and make sure you don't get lost on the way back (I got lost twice) not enough markers. Be safe and be careful!!
Oct 19, 2019 · Ricardo CastilloCool easy easy trails with some deep woods. Short loops with a good outlook of the city. Honeycombed with many trails that crisscross each other, marked and unmarked. Dogs are allowed on leash. When the hawk lookout is open, do see it.
Mar 27, 2025 · The Great ArtisteNice quick trail that has a easy to get to high point lookout. Nice small wildlife and ample parking but could get packed. Trails were almost empty and only 1-3 people on it around 2pm on a weekday. Some trash and graffiti, but overall fairly clean. Not much to look at besides cliff. Didn't see any reservoir on trail.
Aug 03, 2016 · VectwonGreat short trails for walking your pup. I loved the well kept trails and scenic views. Be careful, it does get pretty muddy after it rains and some owners let their dogs run off leash.
