Murray Playground Dog Run Introduce
For dog owners in New York City, finding a safe, dedicated, and welcoming space for their furry companions to run freely and socialize is an absolute necessity. While many parks allow leashed dogs, nothing quite compares to the joy of an off-leash dog run. In the bustling and increasingly dog-friendly neighborhood of Long Island City, Queens, the Murray Playground Dog Run serves as a crucial amenity for the local canine community and their human companions.
Located within the larger Murray Playground at 11-38, 11-98 45th Rd, the Murray Playground Dog Run has been a significant part of the Court Square neighborhood for years. It's a place where local pups can burn off energy, practice their zoomies, and engage in essential canine socialization. As one appreciative local noted, "Finally, a transformation of this dog park! With rubble clearing and fresh mulch. Looking forward to using it more often and to finally having a defend dog run in the Court Square neighborhood." This sentiment highlights the community's desire for improved facilities and their commitment to providing a safe and enjoyable space for their beloved pets. While recent reviews have pointed to challenges with the surface material, the ongoing efforts by the community and NYC Parks demonstrate its importance as a vital outdoor space for Long Island City's growing dog population. It's a place where daily routines intersect with moments of pure canine joy, fostering connections not just between dogs, but among their owners as well.
The Murray Playground Dog Run is conveniently situated within Murray Playground at 11-38, 11-98 45th Rd, Long Island City, NY 11101, USA. This central location in the Court Square area of Long Island City makes it highly accessible for dog owners residing in the immediate vicinity and surrounding neighborhoods.
One of the key advantages of its location is its proximity to major subway lines, a crucial factor for any public amenity in New York City. The dog run is within easy walking distance of the Court Square subway station, which serves the E, M, and G trains, as well as the 7 train. This means dog owners from various parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn can easily reach the dog run with their pups. The 7 train, in particular, offers quick and direct service to Midtown Manhattan, making it a convenient stop for those living or working in the city. Additionally, the Queensboro Plaza station (N, W, and 7 lines) is also within a reasonable walking distance, further expanding transit options.
Beyond the subway, the surrounding Long Island City area is highly walkable, characterized by wide sidewalks and a grid street layout that facilitates easy navigation for both humans and their leashed companions en route to the park. The dog run's integration within the larger Murray Playground also means it's part of a broader green space, offering a pleasant environment for dog owners to relax while their pets play. This excellent accessibility ensures that the Murray Playground Dog Run remains a frequently visited and valued resource for the local dog-owning community.
As a dedicated off-leash dog run within an NYC Parks facility, Murray Playground Dog Run offers essential services and amenities specifically designed to meet the needs of dogs and their owners.
- Fenced Off-Leash Area: The primary service is a secure, fenced enclosure where dogs are legally permitted to run and play off-leash during designated park hours. This allows for safe exercise and socialization.
- Waste Bag Dispensers: While owners are responsible for picking up after their dogs, many NYC dog runs, including this one, typically provide waste bag dispensers as a convenience.
- Trash Receptacles: Ample trash cans are available for the proper disposal of dog waste and other refuse, promoting cleanliness within the run.
- Seating for Owners: Benches or other seating options are usually provided within or just outside the dog run, allowing owners to relax and observe their pets.
- Water Access (Seasonal): Many dog runs in NYC Parks are equipped with water fountains or spigots, particularly during warmer months, to provide hydration for dogs. Availability can be seasonal.
- Surface Material (Currently Under Review/Improvement): Historically, the surface has varied. Recent efforts indicate "fresh mulch" has been added, aiming to provide a safer and more comfortable surface for dogs to run on, addressing previous concerns about "dirt park with a lot of rocks." It's important for users to check current conditions and updates from NYC Parks.
- Community Space: Beyond the physical amenities, the dog run inherently offers a vital community service by providing a regular gathering spot for local dog owners to connect, share tips, and build neighborhood camaraderie.
The Murray Playground Dog Run offers several key features and highlights that make it a valued space for Long Island City's canine community:
- Dedicated Off-Leash Area: Its primary and most important feature is being a designated, fenced space where dogs can legally and safely enjoy off-leash exercise. This freedom is crucial for a dog's physical and mental well-being in an urban environment.
- Prime Long Island City Location: Situated in the vibrant Court Square area, the dog run is incredibly convenient for local residents and easily accessible via multiple subway lines, making it a practical choice for daily visits.
- Community Hub: The dog run fosters a strong sense of community among local dog owners. It's a regular meeting point where friendships are forged, advice is shared, and dogs (and their humans) socialize, enriching the neighborhood's social fabric.
- Ongoing Improvements: As evidenced by recent reviews, there's a clear commitment to improving the dog run. The mention of "rubble clearing and fresh mulch" indicates that the NYC Parks Department and local community are actively working to enhance the play surface, addressing past concerns about rocks and dirt. This responsiveness to community feedback is a significant highlight.
- Part of a Larger Park: Being integrated within Murray Playground means dog owners have access to the broader park's amenities, including general seating and a pleasant environment, before or after their dog's off-leash time.
- Essential Exercise Space: For city dogs who may not have large backyards, the dog run provides a vital space for high-energy play, running, and burning off steam, which is critical for their health and behavior.
As a public dog run operated by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, the Murray Playground Dog Run does not offer commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the traditional business sense. Its primary "promotion" is the provision of a free and accessible space for dog owners and their pets, a vital amenity in a dense urban environment.
However, the community surrounding Murray Playground Dog Run and the NYC Parks Department often facilitate "special offers" in the form of free community events or initiatives that enhance the dog park experience for locals:
- Community Clean-Up Days: Local volunteer groups or the NYC Parks Department may organize periodic clean-up days where dog owners can participate in maintaining the dog run. While not a direct "offer," it's a way to give back and ensure the space remains enjoyable.
- Meet-Up Groups: Dog-owning communities in Long Island City often organize informal meet-up groups at the dog run, providing opportunities for themed playdates, breed-specific gatherings, or simply social gatherings for owners. These are often advertised through local social media groups or bulletin boards.
- Pet-Related Events: Occasionally, local pet stores, veterinary clinics, or rescue organizations might host free events at or near the dog run, such as adoption events, free microchipping clinics, or pet training demonstrations. These are typically announced through local channels.
- Park Improvement Updates: While not a promotion, regular updates from NYC Parks or local community organizations about ongoing improvements (like the "fresh mulch" mentioned in reviews) serve as an incentive, assuring users that the space is being actively maintained and improved for their pets' safety and enjoyment.
To stay informed about any community-driven events or important updates regarding the Murray Playground Dog Run, it's best to check the official NYC Parks website for Murray Playground, and engage with local Long Island City dog owner social media groups or community boards, as these are often the primary channels for such announcements.

For New Yorkers, particularly those in the vibrant and pet-loving community of Long Island City, the Murray Playground Dog Run is an indispensable local asset. Its suitability for residents stems from its fundamental role in promoting canine well-being, fostering community connections, and offering a crucial amenity in a dense urban setting.
Firstly, it provides a vital dedicated space for off-leash exercise. In a city where open spaces are at a premium and leash laws are strictly enforced, having a secure, fenced area where dogs can run freely, chase balls, and burn off energy is paramount for their physical health and mental stimulation. This freedom to play off-leash is a luxury for city dogs and directly contributes to happier, better-behaved pets.
Secondly, the dog run acts as a natural gathering point for local dog owners. It's more than just a park for dogs; it's a social hub for their human companions. Here, neighbors connect, share stories, exchange tips on local vets or pet services, and build a sense of community. This aspect is invaluable in a large city like New York, where opportunities for spontaneous neighborly interaction can sometimes be limited. The shared experience of being a dog owner creates an instant bond, making the dog run a place of camaraderie and support.
Furthermore, its accessible location within Long Island City, easily reachable by multiple subway lines, ensures that it's a practical daily destination for many. This convenience is crucial for busy New Yorkers, allowing them to integrate regular exercise for their pets into their daily routines without extensive travel. The ongoing efforts by the community and NYC Parks to improve the run's surface and amenities, as evidenced by the "fresh mulch" and "rubble clearing," demonstrate a commitment to providing a safe and enjoyable environment, which resonates deeply with local users who care about their pets' well-being.
In conclusion, the Murray Playground Dog Run is an essential piece of Long Island City's urban fabric. It’s a place where dogs can thrive, owners can connect, and the community can come together, making it an undoubtedly suitable and cherished resource for New Yorkers and their beloved canine companions.

Murray Playground Dog Run Reviews
Finally, a transformation of this dog park! With rubble clearing and fresh mulch. Looking forward to using it more often and to finally having a defend dog run in the Court Square neighborhood.
Apr 30, 2022 · Ekaterina PugachevaDirt park with a lot of rocks which is not ideal for dogs especially when they want to run around. My pup’s paw pads were injured.
Aug 04, 2021 · GHIt should be a beautiful park, but NYC Park and the city do nothing to keep the park clean and safe. As a result, dogs are regularly injured, there are rocks and metal sticking out of the ground, it's so dirty that you come out covered in a layer of earth and dust every time you go out there
Feb 19, 2024 · Vasily DanilenkoUpdate: it's amazing how quickly all the mulch got destroyed at this park. It's now dirt and exposed rocks. Not a good place to bring your dog anymore, they are likely to hurt themselves in all the rocks. They should really update this park with pavement or turfThis dog park has become great with the upgrades. We live much closer to the Vernon Blvd Park and we come here anyway. Hopefully the Vernon Blvd Park takes the same path and replaces the disgusting gravel and mud with mulch
