Norvin Green State Forest Otter Hole Parking Lot Introduce
For those in New Jersey seeking an invigorating escape into nature, Norvin Green State Forest stands as a beacon of wilderness, and its Otter Hole Parking Lot serves as a crucial starting point for many adventures. Nestled in the heart of Bloomingdale, NJ, this location is not just a parking spot, but the gateway to some of the state's most beautiful and challenging trails, including the popular trek to Chikahoki Falls. As a local, understanding the nuances of this specific access point can significantly enhance your outdoor experience, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey into the verdant landscapes of Norvin Green.
Norvin Green State Forest itself is a sprawling expanse of nearly 5,417 acres within the New Jersey Highlands. It's renowned for its rugged terrain, dense forests, and picturesque waterfalls, making it a favorite among hikers, birdwatchers, and nature enthusiasts. The Otter Hole Parking Lot is strategically positioned to provide direct access to a network of trails that wind through this stunning natural preserve. While the forest offers a sense of remote wilderness, its accessibility from various parts of New Jersey makes it an ideal destination for a day trip or a longer exploration.
Navigating to the Otter Hole Parking Lot is straightforward for New Jersey residents. It is located at 582 Glenwild Ave, Bloomingdale, NJ 07403, USA. This address places it conveniently within reach for those in northern New Jersey, and accessible via major roadways. However, one crucial aspect to note, as highlighted by fellow hikers, is the limited parking availability at the immediate trailhead. The main lot is relatively small, accommodating approximately 10 to 12 cars. This scarcity means that arriving early, especially on weekends or during peak hiking seasons, is highly recommended to secure a spot.
Fortunately, for those who find the main lot full, there is an overflow parking area located just a couple of minutes further down the same road. While this provides a solution to the limited space, it's important to remember that utilizing the overflow lot means you will need to walk back to the primary Otter Hole Parking Lot to access the official trailhead. This short walk, however, is a minor inconvenience when considering the rewarding trails that await. The road leading to the parking lot and the surrounding area appear to be well-maintained and prepared to accommodate hiker traffic, which is a positive sign for frequent visitors.
While the Otter Hole Parking Lot primarily serves as a starting point for hikes, its utility is defined by the experiences it unlocks within Norvin Green State Forest.

One of the most popular destinations from the Otter Hole Parking Lot is Chikahoki Falls. The journey to the falls is an experience in itself, offering a true taste of New Jersey's natural beauty. According to recent trekkers, the trail from the closest parking to the falls is approximately 1.5 miles, despite some signage indicating it as 1 mile. This minor discrepancy in distance is a good reminder for hikers to always be prepared for a slightly longer journey than anticipated.
The elevation gain to Chikahoki Falls is another point of note for local hikers. While some resources might list the elevation at around 350 feet, actual tracking by experienced hikers using devices like Garmin watches has shown it to be closer to 512 feet between Chikahoki Falls and the parking lot. This significant elevation gain, combined with sections requiring bouldering, categorizes the trail as more moderate than easy. For locals considering this hike, it's wise to come prepared with appropriate footwear and, if you have them, trekking poles, as they can provide invaluable support on the uneven and rocky terrain.
The trail to Chikahoki Falls involves navigating several turns and unmarked forks. Hikers generally follow the Double Blue Trail until it forks to white. It's important to be vigilant for an unmarked fork to the right just before the mile mark, which leads to a small cascade but is not the path to the main falls. Passing turn-offs to yellow and then taking the fork with white is the correct route to Chikahoki Falls. The journey also includes three water crossings, which are generally manageable due to easily navigated rock steps. The falls themselves are best viewed from below, offering a magnificent spectacle, particularly after periods of rain when the water flow is robust.

Norvin Green State Forest Otter Hole Parking Lot Reviews
So we set off today for Chikahoki Falls from the Otter Hole Parking area at Norvin Green State Forest. Parking is very limited so arrive early. There is an overflow parking just up the road and the road seems well prepared to also accomodate hiker parking. The trail is about 1.5 miles from closest parking to the falls. The sign reads 1 mile. This is not accurate...short by .25. The NJ hiking website (In Your State) also had the elevation listed at 350 ft of elevation and by our Garmin watch tracking it was actually 512 ft between Chikahoki and the parking lot. We walked double blue trail until it forked to white. Theres an unmarked fork to the right a little before the mile point, it leads to a small cascade but this is not it. A sign at this intersection would be really helpful. You will pass turn off to yellow and then a fork with white which is what you want to take to the falls itself. Trail involves a lot of bouldering and with elevation, I would call it more moderate than easy. I would also enourage trekking poles if you have them. Tons of poison ivy so be prepared! You have to cross water three times but rock steps are easily navigated. Fall is best viewed from below. Was flowing nicely on 5-25-24.
May 25, 2024 · Ingrid HillSmall lot for about 10 to 12 cars. There is an overflow lot 2 minutes down in the same side of the road. But then you have to walk back to the first lot to hit the trailhead.
Aug 03, 2024 · John LambdaWARNING: The local township is now ticketing people who cant find space to park in the TINY parking lots. DO NOT park along the roadway or you will get a $55 ticket. They are clearly trying to make money on this because there is a single sign for the entire stretch of road and it is turned sideways so you can't see it. The cop was also posted at the bottom of the hill just waiting for more people to park. There are 100's of other great hikes in the area. Skip this one and find one where they actually want people to visit and enjoy it.
Jan 20, 2021 · Aaron StricklerI really like this forest. Really nice trails with amazing views of the surrounding area and many times also NYC. Sometimes it can be crowded though
