Shadmoor State Park Introduce
For many New Yorkers, the allure of escaping the city's hustle and bustle for a dose of nature is a powerful draw. While destinations upstate often come to mind, Long Island's eastern end offers a coastal paradise that feels a world away. Shadmoor State Park, nestled in the picturesque hamlet of Montauk, is one such hidden gem. It's a place where the raw beauty of the Atlantic Ocean meets dramatic bluffs and serene natural landscapes, providing an unparalleled outdoor experience for locals and visitors alike.
Shadmoor State Park encompasses 99 acres of truly remarkable terrain. Named for its open, rolling geography and the plentiful shadbush that thrives here, the park is a testament to Montauk's untouched natural grandeur. Unlike some of the more manicured parks, Shadmoor offers a rugged, authentic feel, allowing visitors to truly immerse themselves in the wild coastal environment. From the moment you step onto its trails, you're greeted with the scent of the ocean, the sounds of birds, and the breathtaking vistas that unfold at every turn. It's a sanctuary for wildlife, a haven for photographers, and a perfect spot for anyone looking to reconnect with nature without straying too far from home.
Shadmoor State Park is conveniently located at 900 Montauk Highway, Montauk, NY 11954, USA. This prime address places it just a quarter-mile east of Montauk Village, making it easily accessible for anyone visiting or residing in the eastern end of Long Island. Its proximity to Montauk's vibrant village means you can easily combine a day of outdoor adventure with a visit to local shops, restaurants, or other attractions.
For New Yorkers making the journey from the city, Montauk is reachable by car, train, or bus. Driving from Manhattan typically takes around 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic, via the Long Island Expressway (I-495) to the Montauk Highway (Route 27). The scenic drive through the Hamptons culminates in the rugged beauty of Montauk, a journey that’s part of the adventure.
Alternatively, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) offers direct train service to Montauk, particularly popular during the warmer months. The Montauk station is a short taxi or ride-share away from Shadmoor State Park. For those who prefer bus travel, Hampton Jitney and Hampton Ambassador provide comfortable, reliable service from various points in NYC to Montauk. Once in Montauk, Shadmoor State Park is easily found by following Montauk Highway (Route 27) eastward from the village. The park offers a free parking lot at its entrance, a significant convenience that sets it apart from some other popular spots in the area that may charge parking fees or require resident permits. This ease of access ensures that a trip to Shadmoor is straightforward and hassle-free, allowing you to maximize your time enjoying the park's splendor.
While Shadmoor State Park is largely celebrated for its unspoiled natural environment, it does offer fundamental amenities and opportunities that enhance the visitor experience. It's important to note that, as a state park focused on preservation, its services are geared towards nature enjoyment rather than extensive recreational facilities. Key services and opportunities include:
- Hiking and Biking Trails: A network of well-maintained trails winds through the park, offering varying levels of difficulty and leading to spectacular viewpoints. These trails are suitable for both leisurely walks and more vigorous hikes. In winter, some trails can also be used for cross-country skiing.
- Beach Access: The park boasts over 2,400 feet of ocean beach, accessible via two stairways that lead down from the bluffs. This allows visitors to enjoy strolls along the shoreline, beachcombing, or simply relaxing by the waves.
- Picnic Areas: While not formally designated with tables, the park's open spaces and scenic overlooks provide ample opportunities for impromptu picnics amidst breathtaking natural scenery.
- Saltwater Fishing: Anglers with the appropriate permits can enjoy saltwater fishing from the park's ocean beach, offering a chance to cast a line in the beautiful Atlantic.
- Free Parking: A dedicated parking lot at the park's entrance provides convenient and free parking for visitors, a notable advantage in a region where parking can often be at a premium.
- Dog-Friendly (On Leash): For those with furry companions, Shadmoor State Park welcomes dogs, provided they are kept on a leash, making it a great spot for a walk with your pet.
Shadmoor State Park is renowned for its distinctive features and highlights that captivate visitors, making it a memorable destination on Long Island's East End.
- Panoramic Ocean Views: The most striking feature of Shadmoor is undoubtedly its unparalleled panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. From atop the dramatic 100-foot bluffs, visitors are treated to expansive vistas of the coastline, the horizon, and the endless sea. Reviewers consistently praise these incredible, sweeping views.
- Dramatic Coastal Bluffs and Sand Dunes: The park’s landscape is defined by its spectacular fluted sand and clay bluffs that plunge dramatically down to the Atlantic. These natural formations, combined with rolling sand dunes, create a rugged and picturesque environment that feels wild and untamed.
- Historic World War II Bunkers: Adding a fascinating historical layer to the natural beauty, two concrete observation bunkers from World War II remain on the property. These structures, once part of a coastal defense system, offer a glimpse into the past and serve as unique viewpoints for enjoying the scenery.
- Diverse Ecosystems and Wildlife: Shadmoor is a haven for nature lovers. It features freshwater wetlands, dense maritime heathland, black cherry trees, and clusters of the rare and federally-endangered sandplain gerardia plant. It's a paradise for birdwatchers, with elevated platforms ideal for observing migrating and nesting birds, as well as various other wild animals.
- Less Manicured, More Natural Experience: As noted by visitors, Shadmoor offers a more "less manicured" and "more dramatic landscape" compared to some other state parks. This preserves its wild charm and appeals to those seeking a truly natural and authentic outdoor adventure.
- Opportunities for Photography: The whimsical patterns of coastal cliffs, the vibrant flowering grasses, and the ever-changing light over the ocean provide endless opportunities for stunning photography, making it a favorite spot for artists and shutterbugs.
As a New York State Park, Shadmoor State Park primarily offers access to natural resources rather than commercial promotions. The park itself does not have an entrance fee for visitors or a parking fee, which is a significant "offer" in itself, especially in a region where parking costs can be substantial. This makes it an incredibly accessible and affordable option for a day out in nature.
While the park doesn't run its own promotions, New York State Parks often have programs like the Empire Pass, which offers unlimited day-use entry to most state parks and facilities for an annual fee. This could be considered a "special offer" for frequent park-goers across the state, including those who plan to visit many of Long Island's excellent state parks. For specific events or ranger-led programs that might be offered occasionally, it's always best to check the official New York State Parks website or contact the park directly.

Shadmoor State Park Reviews
Came here today with my husband and the sand dunes and view here is truly incredible. Even though it was a bit foggy today you can still get panoramic views here and even walk down to the beach (be careful walking down to the beach and choose an opening where the slope is a bit flatter). We enjoyed this place more than Montauk Point State Park as it’s less manicured and has more dramatic landscape.
Jun 25, 2023 · Melissa FergussonMontauk is incredibly beautiful in the surrounding landscape! If you like walking along forest paths, along the steep slopes of the ocean - this park is for you! The whimsical patterns of coastal cliffs, the smell of the ocean, flowering grasses, wild animals and birds will win your heart in general and will remain in your memory in beautiful pictures.
Jul 18, 2021 · Natalia GI loved it so much! The view is amazing, you won't regret it! About Two hours and 40 mins to get there and it was all worth it. I wouldnt say the same about food and restaurants in the area. If you have kids its better if you pack some lunch and snacks for them since there isnt much to choose from.
Jul 17, 2022 · ZEPLLovely hike but do NOT bring your dog, at least not right now (August 2024). There’s a serious tick problem, our dog got infested from a 20 minute walk on these trails. The deer ticks are super tiny be sure to check for them!
