St. Vartan Park Introduce
For us New Yorkers, finding a patch of serene greenery amidst the vibrant, ceaseless energy of the city is like discovering a hidden treasure. While Central Park is iconic, sometimes you need a local, neighborhood park that offers a quick, convenient escape right in your backyard. Today, we're shining a spotlight on St. Vartan Park, a true gem nestled in the heart of Murray Hill that serves as a vital community hub for recreation, relaxation, and family fun.
St. Vartan Park isn't just a patch of grass; it's a thoughtfully designed urban oasis that caters to a diverse range of needs, from active play for children to quiet contemplation for adults. Spanning an entire city block, it provides a much-needed breath of fresh air and a dedicated space for outdoor enjoyment in a densely populated area of Manhattan. It’s a testament to New York City’s commitment to providing quality public spaces for its residents, proving that you don't have to venture far to find a refreshing break from the concrete.
As locals, we appreciate spaces that are clean, accessible, and genuinely useful, and St. Vartan Park consistently delivers on these fronts. It’s a place where young families can connect, where adults can stay active, and where anyone can simply sit back, relax, and observe the unique rhythm of city life unfold. Let’s explore what makes St. Vartan Park a highly recommended destination for New Yorkers seeking a fun and enjoyable time outdoors.
St. Vartan Park boasts an excellent and highly accessible location in Manhattan: 1st Avenue & E 35th St, New York, NY 10016, USA. This places it firmly within the desirable Murray Hill neighborhood, providing a convenient green space for residents and visitors alike.
The park impressively spans an entire city block, stretching between First and Second Avenues and East 35th and East 36th Streets. This generous footprint allows for diverse recreational zones within the park. Its position near the East River waterfront further enhances its appeal, offering a more open feel than some other interior Manhattan parks.
For New Yorkers, accessibility to St. Vartan Park is superb, primarily via various modes of public transportation:
- Subway: While not directly on top of a subway station, the park is within reasonable walking distance (typically 10-15 minutes) of several subway lines. The 6 train at 33rd Street & Park Avenue South, and the 4, 5, 6, 7, and S trains at Grand Central Terminal (a slightly longer but pleasant walk or short bus ride) provide excellent connectivity to other parts of Manhattan and the outer boroughs.
- Buses: Numerous MTA bus lines run along 1st Avenue, 2nd Avenue, and 34th Street, offering very convenient stops right at or very near the park. This makes it easily reachable for those living or working throughout Midtown and beyond.
- Ferry: A significant highlight for accessibility is its "proximity to the ferry port and the East River sidewalk." The NYC Ferry landing at East 34th Street is just a short walk away, offering scenic and efficient travel to destinations along the East River, including Brooklyn, Queens, and other parts of Manhattan. This provides a unique and enjoyable way to reach the park.
- Walking/Cycling: Given its central location, St. Vartan Park is easily accessible by walking or cycling from surrounding neighborhoods like Kips Bay, Gramercy, and Midtown East. The East River Esplanade, ideal for walking and biking, is also very close by.
The park's strategic location ensures that whether you're coming from work, home, or another city adventure, reaching St. Vartan Park is convenient and straightforward, making it a truly accessible urban oasis.

- Children's Play Areas: The park features a "lush green play area for kids on the east side" and a "spacious playground for baseball and more on the west side." This division allows for varied play experiences, with equipment suitable for different age groups. The presence of "a variety of swings, including the rare big red tire swings" is a particular highlight for children.
- Water Fountains/Splash Pads: There are "a couple of fountains too for kids to play around and enjoy," and specifically, a "charming water fountain in the center, a favorite cooling spot for little ones on hot days." These provide refreshing relief during warmer months.
- Sports Courts: For adults and older kids, the park offers "pickleball and basketball court." This provides dedicated spaces for popular sports, encouraging active recreation.

- Open to the Public: The park is "always open for the public," ensuring consistent access for recreation and relaxation (though specific hours for fenced areas might apply).
- Pet Restrictions: There's a clear "No pets allowed" sign in the kids' play area, indicating a policy to maintain cleanliness and safety in specific zones, which is a service to parents and children.
These services collectively make St. Vartan Park a well-rounded and highly functional urban park, serving the recreational and relaxation needs of its community effectively.
St. Vartan Park stands out in the dense urban fabric of Manhattan due to several distinctive features and highlights that contribute to its popularity and suitability for a wide range of visitors, especially locals.

This generous size allows for diverse areas and amenities without feeling cramped, providing ample room for various activities simultaneously.
- Versatile Play Areas for Children: The park is cleverly divided into distinct zones, including a "lush green play area for kids on the east side" and a "spacious playground for baseball and more on the west side." This caters to different age groups and types of play. The inclusion of "rare big red tire swings" is a particularly beloved feature for children.

- Proximity to East River and Ferry: Its close location to the "ferry port and the East River sidewalk" is a significant highlight. This provides easy access to scenic waterfront paths for walking, jogging, or cycling, and convenient transportation options via the NYC Ferry.

These features collectively define St. Vartan Park as a well-rounded, well-maintained, and highly functional urban park that effectively serves the recreational, social, and relaxation needs of its community.
As a public park managed by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, St. Vartan Park does not typically offer commercial "promotions or special offers" in the way a business would. Its primary "offer" is its consistent availability as a free, accessible, and well-maintained public space for the enjoyment of all New Yorkers.
However, the "promotions" for such a park come in the form of its ongoing public services and potential community-led activities. These could be considered its inherent "special offers" to the local community:
- Free Public Access: The most significant "promotion" is that the park, its playgrounds, sports courts, and green spaces are freely accessible to the public, requiring no admission fee. This provides an invaluable resource for recreation and relaxation at no cost.
- Seasonal Programming (unconfirmed): While not explicitly stated for St. Vartan Park, many NYC parks host free seasonal events, such as outdoor fitness classes, concerts, family-friendly festivals, or holiday celebrations. It would be advisable to check the NYC Parks Department website or local community boards for any such scheduled events at St. Vartan Park.
- Year-Round Amenities: The continuous availability of its features – including play areas, sports courts, benches, and restrooms – throughout the year (subject to weather and maintenance) is a consistent benefit offered to the community.
- Community Building: The park serves as a hub for local families, couples, and grandparents, fostering a sense of community and providing a free space for social interaction. This social benefit could be seen as an ongoing "offer" to enhance local well-being.
Therefore, the "special offers" of St. Vartan Park are embedded in its mission as a public green space: providing continuous, free, and diverse recreational opportunities and a peaceful urban escape for all residents and visitors. For the most up-to-date information on any potential community events, checking the official NYC Parks website or local Murray Hill community calendars would be recommended.

Jun 15, 2024 · PhilYouInKnown to me as St. GABRIEL'S Park before it was renamed. I grew up in this Murray Hill Park. We played Basketball with Knicks legend Dick Barnett here when he lived on 33rd street.
May 26, 2025 · Blair BoyerAwesome park for kids: plenty of space and good climbing frames, swing sets, and slides. There are also plenty of benches for parents, a large open area for ball games or scooting. Not to mention the impressive view of the Empire State Building.
