The Hotel Elysee Introduce
In the bustling heart of Midtown Manhattan, where sleek skyscrapers often dominate the skyline, Hotel Elysee stands as a charming and inviting counterpoint. This isn't your typical ultra-modern, minimalist hotel; instead, it offers a warm, comfortable, and distinctly classic New York experience that many locals and visitors alike truly appreciate. As New Yorkers, we know the value of finding a place that feels like a true retreat amidst the city's relentless energy, and Hotel Elysee, part of the esteemed Library Hotel Collection, delivers just that. Since its establishment in 1926, it has been a beloved institution, known for its elegant, European-inspired ambiance and its commitment to personalized service. Imagine stepping into a refined setting that evokes a bygone era of glamour, yet provides all the contemporary comforts you desire. Whether you're planning a special staycation to explore your own city, welcoming out-of-town guests, or simply seeking a sophisticated yet cozy base for business or leisure, Hotel Elysee offers a unique and memorable alternative. It’s a place where the staff remembers your preferences, and the atmosphere feels more like a grand private residence than a large, impersonal hotel. This article will guide you through what makes Hotel Elysee a standout choice for those who value classic charm, excellent location, and a truly hospitable experience in New York City.
Hotel Elysee boasts an exceptional location at 60 East 54th Street, New York, NY 10022, USA. This places it perfectly in Midtown Manhattan, nestled between the high-end shopping of Fifth and Madison Avenues and the refined residential feel of Park Avenue. It’s an address that strikes a perfect balance: central enough to be at the pulse of the city, yet slightly removed from the overwhelming crowds of Times Square, offering a more serene environment.
From this prime spot, guests are within easy walking distance of countless New York City landmarks and attractions. Luxury shopping on Fifth Avenue, including iconic stores like Bergdorf Goodman and Tiffany & Co., is just a stone's throw away. Cultural institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the grand St. Patrick's Cathedral are also a leisurely stroll from the hotel. For those interested in entertainment, Rockefeller Center, with its famous Christmas tree (in season), ice skating rink, Top of the Rock Observation Deck, and Radio City Music Hall, is comfortably accessible on foot.
Nature lovers will appreciate the proximity to Central Park, just a few blocks north, offering expansive green spaces for walks, jogs, or simply unwinding amidst nature. While not directly in the Theater District, Broadway theaters are typically a pleasant 15-20 minute walk away, making it convenient for pre-show dinners and enjoying world-class performances without being in the absolute "hubbub."
Accessibility to and from Hotel Elysee is a significant advantage for both locals and visitors. The hotel is exceptionally well-served by New York City's subway system. The E and M subway lines have a station at 5th Avenue/53rd Street, which is only 4 direct stops from Penn Station and just a few minutes' walk from the hotel. This makes it incredibly convenient for travelers arriving by train or needing quick access to other parts of Manhattan. The N, R, W, and Q lines are also easily accessible at the 57th Street-7th Avenue station, and the 6 train is available at the 51st Street station. This excellent network ensures seamless travel throughout Manhattan and to other boroughs like Queens and South Manhattan, as noted by guests. For those arriving by car, valet parking is available at a nearby garage. Taxis and ride-share services are readily available in this bustling area, providing effortless transportation options for any destination in the city.

Hotel Elysee stands out with several distinctive features and highlights that contribute to its unique charm and consistently positive guest experiences. These elements differentiate it from more generic hotel offerings in New York City.
- Classic European-Inspired Elegance: The hotel's decor, which some describe as "still stuck in the 90s or earlier," is actually a deliberate part of its charm. It's not about being sleek and modern, but rather exuding an "Old World elegance" and a "cozy, warm, homey feeling." With silk-furbished walls, period pieces, classic European art, and glittering crystal chandeliers, it transports guests to a glamorous country inn, offering a refreshing contrast to contemporary hotel aesthetics. This unique ambiance creates an intimate and refined atmosphere.
- The Famous Monkey Bar: Located directly in the lobby, the Monkey Bar is a historic and iconic part of the hotel, and New York City itself. Once a playground for the rich and famous, it's known for its effervescent atmosphere, commissioned caricature murals, and history dating back to the Prohibition era. It serves as a perfect spot for a pre-theater dinner or cocktails, offering an exquisite selection of American favorites.
- Spacious Rooms for NYC Standards: A recurring highlight from guest reviews is the surprisingly generous size of the rooms. In a city where space is a premium, Hotel Elysee's rooms and suites are noted for being "quite large for NYC standards," providing a comfortable retreat. Rooms are distinctly decorated, with unique antiques and original art, ensuring no two rooms are alike.
- Exceptional and Attentive Staff: The hotel consistently receives high praise for its staff's kindness, professionalism, and attentiveness. Guests highlight their willingness to go above and beyond, such as bringing multiple pillow options upon request or efficiently handling ice delivery to rooms. This level of personalized service significantly enhances the guest experience.
- Complimentary Refreshments and Evening Reception: The 24/7 snack room (Club Room) with pastries, snacks, fruit, coffee, and tea, along with the complimentary evening wine and hors d'oeuvres reception, are highly valued. These offerings not only add significant value but also contribute to the "homey" and welcoming atmosphere, fostering a sense of community among guests.
- Quiet Rooms in an Older Building: Despite being in Midtown, guests often report that rooms are "pretty quiet," with minimal noise from neighbors. This is attributed to the older building's construction, which can be a distinct advantage over newer hotels that sometimes have "paper thin" walls. While street noise can be present, the overall tranquility indoors is a notable feature.
- Literary and Artistic History: The hotel has a rich past, having been home to literary giants like Tennessee Williams (who died in the "Sunset" suite) and artists and movie stars, adding a layer of historical intrigue and character that appeals to those interested in New York's cultural legacy. The themed Presidential Suites, dedicated to famous former guests, are a nod to this heritage.
- Flexible Check-out Time: A generous 1:00 PM check-out time allows guests more leisure on their departure day, a thoughtful amenity that adds to the overall comfort and convenience of the stay.

The Hotel Elysee Reviews
The best place to stay in NYC. It's not modern and sleek, and but it's convenient, comfortable, and clean. The location is amazing--nearby subway station is only 4 direct stops from Penn Station (perfect for taking the train to Boston after...), it's near Central Park...lots of shopping...and out of the crazy hubbub of Times Square, yet close enough to walk to the Broadway theaters if you don't mind a 15 - 20 min walk. The staff was very kind, and the snack room was amazing. The rooms are quite large for NYC standards. We called housekeeping to see if they had any other pillow options and they brought us some great choices, so we slept well every night of our stay. (I would highly recommend earplugs, though. The HVAC system is noisy, as is the street noise.) There was just a cozy, warm, homey feeling here that I loved.
May 21, 2025 · M VillaPretty good hotel. One elevator. Breakfast is pastries(which were good) and some snack type things like nutrigrain bars, and fruit. but they have the snacks and drinks out all the time for people to have so that was a surprise.Bed was good, pillow kinda flat but I'm a stomach sleeper so that's a good thing in my case. The decor of the entire place is Def still stuck in the 90s or earlier. It's close to most trains too so it was easy to get to south Manhattan and Queens from here. There's no ice machine, they had to bring it to my room which I'm not used to. The service overall was very good.Room was pretty quiet, I couldn't hear neighbors. Older building probably helps that. Newer hotels are like paper thin sometimes.
Jun 02, 2025 · Alan HThe only way I can honestly start this review is by saying, we will never stay anywhere else in Midtown. Our room was not only comfortable but much larger than expected. The second floor sitting room was cozy and quaint with breakfast, and snacks and drinks. I could easily sit for hours with coffee and a book and be happy. What made our experience absolutely perfect was the staff and the service. Everyone was kind and eager to help. They made our anniversary stay nothing short of wonderful.Looking forward to staying again, hopefully soon.
Apr 06, 2025 · Giovanna MazzarielloWe’ve stayed here quite a number of times. Love it. Rooms are big, clean, beds very comfortable. Old fashioned charm with excellent service. The complimentary club floor has a nice array of snacks, drinks and plenty of charm. Great location. Walk to theater, museums, Central Park. We received a complimentary upgrade to a suite this time. Can I win the lottery and live here?
Mar 30, 2025 · Liz FarishianMy favourite hotel that I’ve stayed in during my time in the states! It is so beautifully decorated and the staff were very helpful and polite. The snacks and drinks room on the 2nd floor is a nice touch and the variety is great. Had a lovely stay, would definitely return, only downside was the bed was rather hard!
