Belmont Lake State Park Introduce
Belmont Lake State Park, located at 625 Belmont Ave, West Babylon, NY 11704, USA, is a cornerstone of outdoor recreation and natural beauty on Long Island. Established in 1926 on land that was once part of August Belmont's "Nursery Stud Farm," a Thoroughbred horse farm, this 463-acre state park has evolved into a full-service scenic spot and serves as the official headquarters for the Long Island State Park Region. Its strategic location, just off the Southern State Parkway, makes it easily accessible for local users and visitors from across the region, offering a diverse array of activities and facilities that cater to all ages and interests.
The environment of Belmont Lake State Park is a harmonious blend of manicured recreational spaces and picturesque natural landscapes. The park's namesake, the 42-acre Belmont Lake, is a central feature, offering expansive open water views that transition into wooded areas and open fields. This mixed terrain provides a varied and engaging experience for visitors. Carll's Creek, which stretches 4.2 miles south to the Great South Bay, also runs through the park, adding to its ecological diversity and providing additional scenic beauty. The presence of mature trees provides ample shade in many areas, particularly around picnic spots and playgrounds, enhancing comfort during warmer days. The park is meticulously maintained, with clearly marked trails and clean facilities, reflecting its status as a premier state park. Visitors often praise the peaceful atmosphere, despite its accessibility, noting the blend of tranquility and vibrant activity.
As a "Scenic Spot" that provides corresponding services and goods, Belmont Lake State Park offers an extensive range of features and amenities. For water enthusiasts, the lake is a hub of activity. Pedal boats, rowboats, and kayaks are available for rent, providing a fun and accessible way to explore the calm waters. Rentals are typically available from May through Columbus Day, with specific hours varying by season (e.g., weekends and holidays from 11 AM to 5 PM during peak summer). Patrons must be 18 years or older to rent a boat and all must wear safety vests provided by park staff. While personal kayaks and canoes (hard-bottomed, non-inflatable, no motors, no surfboards or wakeboards, no paddleboards) are permitted to be launched from the boat dock when open, inflatable boats are not allowed. Fishing is a popular activity, with the lake stocked with trout by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, as well as being home to largemouth bass and sunfish. Fishing is permitted year-round following DEC guidelines, and from rowboats only on weekdays during certain summer months.
The park is a haven for land-based recreation. A network of multi-use trails, totaling 7.6 miles, encircles the lake and extends along Carll's Creek, accommodating hikers, joggers, and cyclists. These trails offer a variety of scenery, from open lake views to shaded, wooded paths, making each walk or ride a unique experience. For those looking for a more structured workout, the park features an exercise trail with various fitness stations. Picnic areas are abundant throughout the park, offering numerous tables and grills. For larger gatherings or special events, Belmont Lake State Park has four pavilions (Birch, Maple, Oak, Pine) available for rent, accommodating up to 200 people. These pavilions can be reserved via ReserveAmerica.com, with prices ranging from $200 to $250. It's important to note that dogs are generally not permitted in picnic areas or playgrounds. The park also features modern children's playgrounds, providing safe and engaging play spaces for younger visitors. Playing fields for various sports, including softball, are available, with softball fields often requiring reservations on weekends.
Additional services and features at Belmont Lake State Park enhance the visitor experience. Horseback riding is available through the nearby Babylon Riding Center, offering equestrian enthusiasts a unique way to explore the park's trails. During winter months, when conditions permit, activities like cross-country skiing and ice skating are also popular. The park offers general amenities such as ample parking, restrooms, and security provided by the New York State Park Police. There is a vehicle entrance fee, typically $8 per car during peak seasons (roughly April to October, with varying hours on weekdays, weekends, and holidays). An Empire Pass, available for purchase at ny.gov, offers unlimited vehicle entry to most New York State Parks and DEC facilities, providing excellent value for frequent visitors. Picnicking for groups under 50 people is free without a permit if a pavilion isn't rented and no bus or alcohol is involved. Alcohol permits for beer or wine are available for a fee. Park Use Permits are required for organized events or activities, with applications needed at least 10 business days prior.
Promotional information for Belmont Lake State Park emphasizes its versatility as a year-round destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts. The park is frequently highlighted for its "beautiful day to take a walk in the park" atmosphere, diverse scenery, and wide range of activities. Customer reviews consistently praise the "mixed terrain and scenery" and "plenty of parking, clearly marked trails, and scenic views." Belmont Lake State Park Reviews
What a beautiful day to take a walk in the park. Mixed terrain and scenery. From wooded areas to wide open lake views. Ok there were cannons from a British warship which justifies extra points. Plenty of parking, clearly marked trails, and scenic views. No fee until April 1st. Located right off the southern state parkway.
Mar 29, 2025 · JOSEPH P.I came here the Sunday before Memorial Day 2025.A Park Police car was on the grounds, so I felt safe.Park goers were enjoying themselves, BBQg, biking, canoeing, paddle boating, picnicking, etc.Bring insect spray and deer tick repellent!Buy an Empire Pass at ny.gov for unlimited vehicle entries.
May 26, 2025 · Valerie MaeLove the trails here….. love that the fixed the lighting under the bridge at Sunrise Hwy to make it safer , but could level the ground underneath. A little dicey for runners and cyclists alike since it is so uneven. Otherwise a beautiful park
May 12, 2025 · L IslandAmazing place lots of playgrounds for children to play a large beautiful lake with swans and Ducks to feed very organized very spacious very clean lots of vendors there's not enough good things to say about this place. Great place to throw an impromptu party for your children
May 13, 2025 · Kenny MillerThe trail here is truly a nice stroll half woods around the lake. Pups on leash welcome . Kids can drop a line, family Bbq, bikes, paddle boating. My only concern is sometimes the clientele so don’t go at dusk or later
