California Hill State Forest

170 Waywayanda Ct, Carmel Hamlet, NY 10512, USA

4.0
We picked up the trail off of Waywayanda Road, unpaved & windy with lots of potholes. We followed til the end & had to cross a stream to get to the trail. Recent rains washed out trail in sections. The payoff, seeing the King's Chamber! Wow, an impressive man-made cave. So much mystery surrounding this chamber and others in the area. Some say they were used as root cellars by early colonists, others say they date back much further, perhaps to extinct Native American Tribes. Worth the hike! - JoAnn Norris

Checking the NYSDEC Region 3 website is recommended for such announcements.
  • Seasonal Hunting and Fishing Opportunities: For those with appropriate licenses, the specific hunting and fishing seasons in the forest and Waywayanda Lake can be viewed as seasonal "offers." These regulated periods provide a chance to engage in these traditional outdoor pursuits within a managed natural setting.
  • Volunteer Stewardship Events: Local environmental groups or the NYSDEC may organize volunteer days for trail maintenance, invasive species removal, or habitat improvement (like the past "Duck Box Installation Day" at Waywayanda Lake). While requiring effort, these are "special offers" for locals to actively contribute to the preservation of their natural spaces and gain hands-on conservation experience.
  • Community Events: Occasionally, local communities or non-profit organizations might host events (e.g., nature photography contests, interpretive hikes) that utilize the forest. These events would be promoted through local town websites, community calendars, or social media.
