Features / Highlights:
- Intermediate to Advanced Level Skatepark: The skatepark at Callahan-Kelly Playground is a significant highlight, renowned for its diverse array of features designed to challenge and engage intermediate to advanced skaters. It's not just a flat slab of concrete; it’s a meticulously designed space that encourages skill development.
- Numerous Banks with Coping: Skaters will appreciate the abundance of banks, many equipped with coping. This is ideal for practicing stalls and grinds, offering varying heights (approximately 3 feet and higher) to cater to different skill levels. The presence of deep pockets within these banks provides excellent opportunities for carving practice.
- Advanced Bank with Steep Drop-in: For the truly daring, there's an advanced level bank featuring a very steep drop-in. While it presents a significant challenge due to an uneven surface towards the mid-end and an approximate height of 8 feet, it’s a feature that seasoned skaters look forward to conquering.
- Three Varied Ledges: The skatepark includes three distinct ledges, categorized as beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The advanced ledge is strategically attached to a ramp near the L train entrance, providing exciting opportunities for jumping on and off into the ramp. Measurements of some ledges are also provided within the park, aiding skaters in their practice.
- Beginner-Friendly Volcano Feature: A two-foot tall volcano, with a gentle slope, is perfect for practicing fakies and other stunts. Its low height and shallow incline allow for quick resets and multiple trick attempts, making it ideal for those looking to refine their technique.
- Wide Circular Disc: A unique feature is a wide circular disc, approximately one foot in height, excellent for working on curved edges. Its large diameter allows multiple skaters to utilize it simultaneously, promoting a communal practice environment.
- Rectangular Block for Grinding: A rectangular block is incorporated into the design, positioned to allow skaters to drop down from the tallest bank and then jump onto the block for grinding, offering a dynamic sequence of maneuvers.
- Community-Oriented Vibe: Beyond the physical features, the park is consistently praised for its cool and welcoming vibe. The presence of friendly staff and fellow park-goers creates a supportive atmosphere, enhancing the overall experience for visitors.
While Callahan-Kelly Playground doesn't typically run ongoing, formal "promotions" in the commercial sense, its greatest offer to the community is its freely accessible and well-maintained facilities. Unlike many private recreational centers, this public park provides a fantastic space for recreation without any entry fees or membership costs. This accessibility itself is a significant advantage for New York residents, offering a high-value resource for family outings and individual pursuits. The park's commitment to providing a safe and engaging environment for both children and skaters is a continuous "special offer" to the community. Furthermore, the strong positive reviews highlight an unadvertised, yet consistently present, "special offer": the friendly and supportive atmosphere. Skaters often mention the positive interactions with staff, like Tyler, and other park users, fostering a sense of camaraderie that is invaluable. This informal, yet deeply impactful, promotion of community spirit makes every visit to Callahan-Kelly Playground a pleasant and enriching experience. For families, the sheer joy and physical activity provided by the two playgrounds and open field are free benefits that support healthy child development. Callahan-Kelly Playground Reviews
Very cute and fun park. It’s big and felt safe. No adults allowed unless accompanying children. There are two playgrounds, 2 sets of swings and a field. Also a skatepark!
Nov 02, 2024 · BreezeBig shout out to Tyler 🤜🏾🤛🏻who addressed me with the coolest vibes! And to the two other homies who helped me manage my stuff and had a brief conversation 🗣️with me.🛼Ranking Level of skate park: Intermediate - AdvancedBanks -There are a lot of banks with coping but a few without coping. Great to work on stalls, & grinds! There are banks that are as low as approximately 3 feet and then some that are higher. Each has at least one deep pocket which is great to work on carving.⚠️There is one advanced level bank that has a very steep drop in with a rectangular metal edge but has an UNeven surface towards the mid-end of it. It’s probably a good 8 feet in height. Upon my next visit, I will try it out! (Check photo)Ledges - There are 3 ledges there each ranking from beginner, intermediate and advanced. The advanced ledge is attached to the ramp closer to the L train entrance/exit. (Measurements of some of the ledges are posted.) Great for jumping on and off into the ramp.🌋Volcano - There is one volcano and it is about 2 feet in height and not very sloped so it is perfect for practicing fakies and doing other stunts. The low height and not so deep slope leaves great room for a quick reset into multiple tricks.🔘Circular disc - Great to work on curved edges. Since the diameter is very wide and large, multiple folks can work on it all at once. It is probably only a foot in height. Not sure how else to use it. 🤷🏾♀️🧱Rectangular block - There is a rectangular block where one can work on dropping down from the tallest bank and then jumping on the block to grind.Overall - IF you’re working on grinds, stalls and carves on an early intermediate level this is a great park to get your practice in and take your level up to advance. However, if you’re a beginner there are not many beginner friendly obstacles here. Nevertheless, beginners should still check out the park and and challenge themselves.Vibes are are very cool there btw. But I highly recommend you have someone to keep their eyes on your bags 🧳 or any stuff that you bring. Either that or leave it in your car. Not necessarily due to the skaters but to the many passer-byers heading to and fro from the train station.
Sep 02, 2023 · Roxanne LouisWhen my daughter and I moved here a year ago this park was TERRIBLE!!! So they closed it down and build a new one. The pictures don't do justice. Now my daughter asks to go almost everyday. They just reopened it about 2 months ago. It has an outdoor gym, soccer field, huge basketball court, skate park, picnic lounge are, the kiddy park is a nice size. I just hope these people keep it clean. Smh
Aug 31, 2023 · Jamila MilhouseThe play ground was just reopened with beautiful outdoor space. The only thing missing is there is no bathroom facility. The park also has skateboarding. Chess tables basketball and plenty of outdoor seating.
