Great neighborhood playground. It has a splash pad in the Summertime. Highly recommend! Was able to relax and do a little painting with our travel watercolor pebble paint kit while the kiddos played. The kids had a blast at the playground and splash pad. Playground was more geared toward older kids but regardless our 1 year old was able to enjoy with supervision. Unfortunately no restroom. - Off to see the World

DeSalvio Playground Introduce

Nestled in the vibrant neighborhood of Nolita, New York City, DeSalvio Playground stands as a true community gem. More than just a patch of green, this well-loved park offers a crucial respite from the urban hustle, providing a safe, engaging, and enjoyable space for residents of all ages. For those of us living in or visiting Lower Manhattan, DeSalvio Playground is a go-to spot for family fun, quiet contemplation, and a connection to the rich history of the area.

DeSalvio Playground is proudly named in honor of John DeSalvio (1881–1948) and his son Louis DeSalvio (1910–2004), prominent figures in New York City's Italian-American community. John DeSalvio, a first-generation American, was a significant district leader in the Second Assembly District (West) and a notable Italian-American member of the Tammany Hall political organization. Louis DeSalvio followed in his father's footsteps, serving as a New York State Assemblyman for the Second District and playing a key role in the playground's creation. The city acquired the property in 1954, and the playground officially opened its gates on December 15, 1955. This historical connection is subtly woven into the park's design, with its modular play equipment often featuring the colors of the Italian flag – red, white, and green – a thoughtful nod to the neighborhood's heritage.

This beloved neighborhood playground is a testament to thoughtful urban planning, providing essential green space and recreational opportunities in a densely populated area. It’s a place where childhood memories are made, neighbors connect, and the pulse of New York City life finds a moment of calm. Whether you’re a parent looking for a safe and stimulating environment for your children, or simply seeking a peaceful spot to unwind, DeSalvio Playground offers a welcoming embrace. Its design and amenities cater to a wide range of needs, making it a truly inclusive community asset. The park’s commitment to providing a refreshing escape, particularly during warmer months with its popular splash pad, makes it an indispensable part of the Nolita landscape. It's more than just a playground; it's a vibrant hub where the community can gather, play, and relax.

This area, just above Little Italy, is known for its unique blend of trendy boutiques, diverse eateries, and rich cultural heritage. Its central location makes it easily accessible for residents and visitors alike, whether you're coming from nearby Soho, Little Italy, or other parts of Lower Manhattan.

Getting to DeSalvio Playground is remarkably convenient thanks to New York City's extensive public transportation network. For subway riders, the park is a short walk from several key lines. For those who prefer bus travel, the M21 bus route serves Spring Street in the eastbound direction, with stops that make access to the playground straightforward. The M21 bus runs from Washington Street to 6th Avenue, beginning service at Greenwich Street. While direct parking at the playground itself is not available, as is common with many urban parks in New York City, there are often metered street parking spots and commercial parking garages in the surrounding Nolita and Little Italy areas. However, for most New Yorkers, public transit remains the most convenient and efficient way to reach DeSalvio Playground. The park is also fully fenced, making it a secure and contained environment for children to play, giving parents an added layer of peace of mind.

The splash pad in the summertime is a seasonal highlight, offering a refreshing and complimentary way to cool down. Furthermore, the NYC Parks Department occasionally hosts free community events and programs at various parks across the city, and DeSalvio Playground, given its community focus, may be a venue for such initiatives.
