Gerard P. Dugan Playground has undergone a significant transformation, making it a standout recreational spot on Staten Island with several key features and highlights that enhance the visitor experience:
- Major Renovation and Modern Amenities: The park received a substantial $3.72 million renovation, completed in early 2023. This investment brought entirely new play equipment, fresh surfacing, and modern amenities, ensuring a safe and engaging environment for children. The renovation focused on providing high-quality, up-to-date facilities.
- Inclusive and Accessible Design: A critical highlight of the renovation is its commitment to accessibility. The park now features ADA-accessible seating areas, game tables, accessible swings, and ground-level and ramped play features. This thoughtful design ensures that children and adults of all abilities can fully enjoy the playground, promoting inclusive play. Sensory-friendly spaces and multi-sensory play experiences (auditory, tactile, visual) further enhance accessibility.
- Diverse Play Zones: The playground is well-structured with distinct play areas for different age groups (2-5 and 5-12), allowing children to engage with age-appropriate challenges and equipment. This thoughtful zoning helps manage different play styles and energy levels.
- Engaging Water Play: The sprinkler area, designed to look like a maze, is a major draw, especially during the hot New York summers. It provides a unique and fun way for children to cool off and engage in interactive water play.
- Multi-Sport Facilities: Beyond the playground, the park boasts robust sports facilities, including two baseball/softball fields, a basketball court, and two handball courts. This makes it a versatile destination for organized sports leagues, casual games, and active recreation for teens and adults.
- Strategic Shade Planting: Acknowledging the importance of comfort, the renovation included planting new trees and shrubs to provide more shade in the center of the playground, addressing a common concern in many urban parks.
- Cleanliness and Maintenance: NYC Parks inspections consistently rate the park's cleanliness and overall condition as "Acceptable," indicating a commitment to ongoing maintenance and a pleasant environment for visitors.
As a public park operated by NYC Parks, Gerard P. Dugan Playground does not typically offer commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the retail sense. Its primary value and "promotion" to the Staten Island community lie in the provision of free, high-quality recreational facilities and green space. However, residents can benefit from several aspects that might be considered ongoing offers:
- Free Access to Renovated Facilities: The significant $3.72 million renovation itself is a major "offer" to the community, providing brand-new, accessible, and engaging play equipment, sports courts, and amenities without any cost to the individual user at the point of entry. This capital investment ensures a superior experience.
- Seasonal Programs and Events: While Gerard P. Dugan Playground's specific event schedule might not always be posted directly on its individual page, NYC Parks often hosts free seasonal programs, workshops, and community events across its network of parks. Staten Islanders should regularly check the main NYC Parks website's "Events" section for upcoming activities, especially during summer months, which might include anything from fitness classes to nature programs or children's festivals held at local parks, potentially including Dugan Playground.
- Free Permits for Youth Leagues: NYC Parks offers free permits for organized youth leagues (for those under 18) to use athletic fields. This is a significant "special offer" for local sports organizations and parents looking to get their children involved in team sports without incurring high facility rental fees.
- Community Engagement Opportunities: The park serves as a free gathering space for community events, even if not explicitly promoted by the park itself. Residents can organize informal meet-ups, playdates, or group activities at no charge.
To maximize the benefits and be aware of any relevant activities, Staten Islanders should regularly visit the official NYC Parks website or subscribe to their newsletters for updates on citywide and local park programs. These resources are the best way to discover any free offerings or opportunities related to Gerard P. Dugan Playground and other NYC Parks facilities.

Gerard P. Dugan Playground Reviews
So happy they renovated this park and of course my toddler loved it. But for 3.7 million they could have added way more...a merry-go-round, see-saws and a larger new restroom.
Oct 23, 2023 · Yvonne SzackiGood playground for all ages, sprinkler, bathroom, swings, field, no shade, kids are a little rough.
May 02, 2024 · Jason PennacchioNew, clean, and a great assortment of swings, jungle gyms, & even a water fountain for the summer.
Apr 08, 2025 · Daveey CrockettI drive about 20 minutes to go here and it's worth it. The playground has 2 sections one for toddlers and another area for older kids. It has swings for big and little kids. It also has sprinkles, seating area and a public restroom. There is only street parking available. Behind the playground is a track and field area.
