Willowbrook Parkway Introduce
Hello, New Yorkers! When you think of city parks, your mind might immediately go to the sprawling landscapes of Manhattan or Brooklyn. But for those of us on Staten Island, or looking for a refreshing escape from the urban hustle, Willowbrook Parkway, more commonly known as Willowbrook Park, stands out as a true gem. This isn't just a patch of grass; it's a vital part of Staten Island's magnificent Greenbelt, offering a diverse array of recreational opportunities and a welcome immersion into nature right here in our borough.
Willowbrook Park is a multifaceted recreational area, celebrated by locals for its blend of natural beauty and engaging activities. As one visitor noted, it's "Very nice to go through here and take breaks from my bike rides," highlighting its appeal for active pursuits. Another enthusiastic review perfectly captures its diverse offerings: "A nice little park, fishing small play ground archery, and trails to explore." This combination of passive and active recreation makes it a unique and valuable asset for Staten Island residents.
What truly makes Willowbrook Park special, and a favorite among New Yorkers, is its ability to cater to a wide range of interests. From serene spots for reflection to vibrant areas for play, the park is designed for enjoyment. The mention of the "carousel" immediately brings to mind the Carousel for All Children, a beloved feature that adds a touch of whimsical fun for families. While some practical advice about "bringing tick spray" and that "parking can be tough when it's busy" are helpful insights from fellow locals, they only underscore the park's popularity and the vibrant life it hosts. Its well-maintained facilities and diverse activities solidify its status as a must-visit destination for anyone looking to enjoy the great outdoors on Staten Island.
Willowbrook Parkway, which leads into Willowbrook Park, is primarily accessed via Richmond Road in Staten Island, NY 10306, USA. The park itself is a significant component of the Staten Island Greenbelt, situated in the central part of the borough. Its specific boundaries are generally between Victory Boulevard and Richmond Avenue, and its eastern boundary abuts the campus of the College of Staten Island. This central location makes it a relatively accessible destination for many Staten Island residents.
For those traveling by car, there are parking areas available within or adjacent to Willowbrook Park. However, as noted by local reviews, "Parking can be tough when it's busy," especially during peak usage times such as pleasant weather weekends or when special events are taking place. Visitors are advised to arrive early, especially if planning to use popular amenities like picnic tables, to secure a spot. The park's design along a parkway means that various entry points might offer different parking opportunities, so exploring different entrances can sometimes yield better results.
Public transportation to Willowbrook Park is feasible, as Staten Island is served by numerous MTA bus lines. Bus stops are located on major thoroughfares surrounding the park, such as Victory Boulevard and Richmond Avenue. For example, several bus lines (like the S62, S89, S93, SIM33C, and SIM4C) have stops within walking distance of various park entrances or features. Visitors can utilize the MTA's website or transit apps like Moovit to plan their routes, identifying the most convenient bus stops to reach specific areas of the park, such as the Carousel for All Children or the main recreational facilities. While there isn't a direct subway connection on Staten Island, the extensive bus network provides reliable access to this popular Greenbelt destination for New Yorkers relying on public transit.

Willowbrook Park is celebrated for numerous "features" and "highlights" that contribute to its popularity and make it a standout destination within New York City's park system, particularly on Staten Island.
Part of the Staten Island Greenbelt: This is a major highlight. Willowbrook Park is a vital component of the Staten Island Greenbelt, the largest Parks sub-system. This connection ensures its preservation and links it to a continuous band of green space across the island.
Carousel for All Children: A truly unique and beloved feature, this fully-accessible, Victorian-style merry-go-round is a major attraction, delighting visitors with its hand-carved animals and intricate Staten Island scenes. Its accessibility ensures enjoyment for everyone.
Diverse Ecosystems and Wildlife: The park boasts a "unique patch of greenery" with "protected space for wildlife," including a large tract of lowland forest, swamps, and a five-acre lake that serves as a bird sanctuary. This makes it a fantastic spot for nature observation, bird watching, and appreciating local flora and fauna.
Archery Range with Programs: Unlike many city parks, Willowbrook offers an archery range, often with free programs provided by the Urban Park Rangers. This provides a rare opportunity for New Yorkers to try an engaging and historical sport.
Extensive Trail Network: Its well-maintained "trails to explore" are perfect for "bike rides" and hiking, offering a chance to "escape into a more peaceful setting" away from urban noise. An asphalt pedestrian walkway also provides handicapped access to the lake, emphasizing inclusivity.
Historical Significance: The Willowbrook area has a rich history, with colonial records dating back to 1683, and was even a site for secret sessions by patriots during the American Revolution. The nearby former Willowbrook State School, now part of the College of Staten Island, also carries significant historical weight.
Family-Friendly Amenities: Beyond the carousel, the park includes playgrounds, ballfields, and barbecuing areas, creating an ideal environment for family picnics and outings, allowing families to "spend the whole day there."
Catch and Release Fishing: The opportunity for catch and release fishing in Willowbrook Lake adds another layer of recreational appeal for all ages.
These features collectively make Willowbrook Park a truly special and invaluable asset for the Staten Island community and beyond.
As a public park managed by NYC Parks, Willowbrook Park does not typically offer commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the retail sense. Its primary and continuous "promotion" is its open and free access to its vast array of facilities and natural beauty for all New Yorkers.
However, the NYC Parks Department and the Greenbelt Conservancy, which helps preserve and manage the Greenbelt system Willowbrook Park is part of, frequently organize a variety of free or low-cost community programs and events that serve as valuable "special offers" for residents. These activities are designed to encourage engagement with nature, promote healthy living, and foster community spirit. Examples of such opportunities that might be available at or related to Willowbrook Park include:
Free Archery Programs: As noted by a local review, the Urban Park Rangers often host free archery sessions at the park's range, providing equipment and instruction for participants.
Environmental Education Programs: Given its status as a Greenbelt park and bird sanctuary, there are often free nature walks, birdwatching tours, or ecological workshops organized by NYC Parks or the Greenbelt Conservancy.
Outdoor Fitness Classes: Periodically, free or donation-based yoga, tai chi, or other fitness classes might be held in scenic areas of the park.
Youth and Family Activities: Events specifically tailored for children, such as nature scavenger hunts, storytelling sessions, or hands-on environmental projects, are common throughout the park system.
"It's My Park" Day Events: NYC Parks hosts citywide "It's My Park" events, often involving volunteer clean-ups, planting activities, or community celebrations at various parks, including Willowbrook.
Free Carousel Rides: While the Carousel for All Children typically has a small fee ($1 a ride, as noted in some sources), there might be specific days or events where rides are offered for free as part of a larger celebration.
To stay informed about these exciting "promotions" and "special offers," New Yorkers are strongly encouraged to:
Visit the official NYC Parks website (nycgovparks.org) and specifically search for events at Willowbrook Park.
Check the Greenbelt Conservancy website (sigreenbelt.org) for their schedule of events and programs.
Subscribe to newsletters or follow the social media channels of NYC Parks and the Greenbelt Conservancy.
Look for flyers or announcements at the park itself or at local community centers.
The consistent availability of these enriching and often free activities is a testament to the value Willowbrook Park brings to the Staten Island community.

Willowbrook Parkway Reviews
Very nice to go through here and take breaks from my bike rides. I would say though to bring tick spray as theres lots of them! Also look out for tweakers.
Jun 12, 2023 · Johannes HershewitzA nice little park, fishing small play ground archery, and trails to explore. It can be crowded, especially if you plan to use the picnic tables so get there early. Parking can be tough when it's busy. And they have the carousel, restrooms are right across the street and are acceptable.
Jul 20, 2019 · Andrew LeyBeautiful grounds with pond, trails, parking and bathroom facilities! there were a ton of turtles sunning themselves when I visited and I saw a snowy egret! Amazing.
Jul 07, 2020 · TamarI stopped here early in the morning and was pleasantly surprised. I walked around the small lake and found it to be really nice way to start the day. I'd definitely come back.
May 16, 2018 · David GThe Willowbrook Parkway is not for vehicles. It is a hiking trail that leads to Moses Mountain (named after Robert Moses). The area was created because of excavation that was being done for the proposed Richmond Parkway which was eventually aborted for conservation reasons. From this spot you can see the Atlantic Highlands of New Jersey and the entire Greenbelt of Staten Island
