NYS&W Railway Bicycle and Pedestrian Path Access

17 Harrison Rd, Pompton Plains, NJ 07444, USA

4.0
This is the northern trailhead for the multi use trail that follows the course of the New York Susquehanna and Western Railroad. There is a gravel parking area near by. From here the tracks extend to the north. There is a rough cut trail that follows the tracks but this will only take you a short distance before the tracks are active, rarely so to bring freight to warehouses, but active none the less. Hiking south from here one will find a whistle marker just north of Route 23. Someone should tell the folks who reset its location that it should be turned 90 degrees. The trail itself is wide level and paved, great for hiking, walking, biking, jogging, dog walking, and suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. - cdk007

Location and Accessibility

The primary access point for the NYS&W Railway Bicycle and Pedestrian Path, which serves as its northern trailhead, is conveniently located at 17 Harrison Rd, Pompton Plains, NJ 07444, USA. This address in Morris County, New Jersey, makes it a highly accessible destination for residents across Northern New Jersey. Pompton Plains benefits from its proximity to major routes, allowing for relatively easy travel to the trailhead from various parts of the state.

Accessibility at the trailhead is well-thought-out, with a "gravel parking area nearby," ensuring that visitors arriving by car have a convenient place to leave their vehicles before embarking on their journey. The trail itself is a marvel of accessibility, being "wide, level, and paved," which significantly enhances its appeal. This design makes it "great for hiking, walking, biking, jogging, dog walking, and suitable for wheelchairs and strollers." This inclusive design means that individuals of all ages and abilities can comfortably enjoy the path, from young families with strollers to seniors using mobility aids. One user even mentioned parking in a "small dirt lot off River Drive in Pompton Plains about 25 feet from the trailhead," highlighting various entry options. While the main path extends south for about 4.8 miles to the Mountain View (Wayne) trailhead, it's important to note that the tracks extending north from the 17 Harrison Rd trailhead are primarily active railway lines, so the developed multi-use path largely focuses on the southern direction. This commitment to wide, level, and paved surfaces, combined with dedicated parking, ensures the NYS&W Railway Path is an incredibly user-friendly and inviting outdoor space for New Jerseyans.

While restrooms are not directly on the trail, the proximity to commercial areas offers convenient access to food and facilities.
  • Community Activity Venue: The path serves as an excellent venue for personal fitness, family outings, and potentially organized community runs or walks, fostering a healthy and active lifestyle among New Jersey residents.

Features / Highlights

The NYS&W Railway Bicycle and Pedestrian Path is distinguished by several key features and highlights that make it a premier choice for outdoor recreation in New Jersey:

  • Smooth, Paved Surface: Unlike many unpaved hiking trails, the "wide, level, and paved" surface is a significant highlight. This makes it exceptionally comfortable and safe for all users, including those on bikes, with strollers, or in wheelchairs, and minimizes tripping hazards.
  • Extensive Length (4.8 miles): The ability to travel the "entire 4.8-mile stretch from end to end" provides a substantial distance for extended walks, runs, or bike rides, catering to those seeking a decent cardio workout or a long leisurely outing.
  • Diverse Scenery: The trail offers varied scenery as it progresses, passing through residential neighborhoods, downtown areas with potential eateries, industrial complexes, and serene wetlands. This changing landscape keeps the experience fresh and engaging.
  • Wildlife Sightings: The presence of "deer herds roaming along and across the path" and potential for insect sightings (especially in wetland areas) indicates a connection with local wildlife, adding an element of nature observation to the experience.
  • Historical Repurposing: Its origin as a former railway line gives the trail a unique character, repurposing historical infrastructure for modern recreational use.
  • Family and Dog-Friendly: Its gentle grade and wide path make it ideal for families with small children on bikes or in strollers, and it's explicitly suitable for dog walking, making it a favorite for New Jersey pet owners.
  • Accessibility and Parking: The convenient northern trailhead at 17 Harrison Rd with a nearby gravel parking area makes starting the journey straightforward and hassle-free.

While the trail offers excellent features, users should be mindful of road crossings and potential insects in wetland areas, as noted in customer reviews.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a public recreational trail managed by local authorities (likely involving collaboration between several municipalities like Pequannock and Wayne), the NYS&W Railway Bicycle and Pedestrian Path does not typically offer commercial "promotions" or "special offers." Its primary "offer" is its free and open access to the public for recreational use. However, the value it provides to the New Jersey community can be considered in terms of:

  • Free Public Access: The most significant "promotion" is that the trail is entirely free to use for all residents and visitors, providing an invaluable resource for health, fitness, and enjoyment without any cost.
  • Community Events: While not organized by the trail itself, local recreation departments or community groups in Pompton Plains, Pequannock, or Wayne may organize free or low-cost events on the trail, such as charity runs, nature walks, or family bike rides. These events would be advertised through local municipal channels.
  • Health and Wellness Resource: The trail offers a continuous "promotion" of health and wellness by providing a safe, accessible, and encouraging environment for physical activity for all ages and abilities.

To stay informed about any community-organized events that might take place on the NYS&W Railway Path, interested individuals should consult the official websites or recreation calendars of the Borough of Pompton Plains, Pequannock Township, and Wayne Township.
