Riverside Park South Introduce
For those of us who call New York City home, green spaces are more than just parks; they are vital lungs of the city, offering essential breathing room, recreational opportunities, and a connection to nature. While Central Park often takes the spotlight, the city is dotted with numerous other incredible parks, each with its own unique charm and offerings. One such celebrated gem, particularly for residents of the Upper West Side and beyond, is Riverside Park South. Located along Riverside Blvd, New York, NY 10069, USA, this thin, yet remarkably rich, strip of greenery along the Hudson River is a true waterfront oasis.
Riverside Park South represents a remarkable transformation of former rail yards and industrial land into a vibrant public park. This multi-phase project, which began decades ago, has beautifully reclaimed the waterfront, turning it into a dynamic space for recreation, relaxation, and stunning scenic views. It’s a testament to New York City’s continuous evolution and commitment to expanding its green infrastructure. For locals, this park offers a unique vantage point to experience the Hudson River, observe wildlife, and engage in a wide array of activities without ever leaving Manhattan.
What makes Riverside Park South so suitable for New Yorkers? It’s the sheer diversity of amenities packed into its linear layout. As reviews frequently highlight, it "has everything to keep the whole family and pet dogs entertained." From playgrounds for the kids to dog runs for our furry friends, and from peaceful picnic spots to active sports areas, there's truly something for everyone. And, of course, the consistently praised "beautiful scenery of the river, especially during sunset," provides a daily, free spectacle that residents cherish. Despite its proximity to the highway, the park maintains a remarkable ability to provide a sense of escape and tranquility, making it a beloved destination for daily life and special moments alike.
Location and Accessibility
Riverside Park South is strategically located along Riverside Blvd, New York, NY 10069, USA, stretching along the Hudson River on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. This unique linear park extends roughly from 59th Street up to 72nd Street, connecting directly to the broader Riverside Park system further north. Its waterfront position provides an unparalleled natural boundary against the urban landscape.
The park's direct adjacency to the Hudson River Greenway is a significant advantage. This extensive, paved multi-use path runs continuously for miles along Manhattan’s western shore, making Riverside Park South an ideal destination for cyclists, runners, walkers, and rollerbladers. Whether you're heading downtown towards Battery Park and the Financial District, or north towards the George Washington Bridge, the Greenway offers a scenic and dedicated route for outdoor activity. Reviews consistently praise the "tons of great paths for runners, walkers, and dogs."
Public transportation access to Riverside Park South is excellent, making it convenient for New Yorkers from various neighborhoods. The 1 train serves multiple stops along Broadway, including 59th Street-Columbus Circle, 66th Street-Lincoln Center, and 72nd Street, all of which are within a reasonable walking distance to different sections of the park. Additionally, numerous bus lines traverse the Upper West Side, with stops along Riverside Drive, Broadway, and other avenues, providing easy access to the park's entrances. While the park is indeed close to the Joe DiMaggio Highway (West Side Highway), which provides road access, its integration with pedestrian bridges and underpasses ensures safe and seamless access from the residential areas to the east. This blend of waterfront beauty and urban accessibility makes Riverside Park South a highly desirable and frequently visited destination for both active recreation and peaceful escapes.

Riverside Park South Reviews
Riverside Park South is a thin little strip of greenery along the Hudson River. For such a thin park, it has a decent amount of amenities. There are some picnic areas, various fenced in sports areas, etc. The scenery of the river, especially during sunset can be quite beautiful too.I would give it another star, but the proximity to the highway detracts from the tranquility you might expect from a decent sized park.
