Septuagesimo Uno Introduce
In the vibrant and often bustling landscape of New York City's Upper West Side, amidst the grand pre-war buildings and lively streetscapes, lies a hidden gem of tranquility: Septuagesimo Uno. While its name, Latin for "seventy-first," might hint at its location, this charming pocket park is much more than just a numerical marker. It represents a quintessential New York urban oasis, a small yet perfectly formed green space that offers a delightful pause from the city's ceaseless energy. For New Yorkers, particularly those residing or working in the Upper West Side, Septuagesimo Uno is a cherished local secret, providing an intimate connection to nature right in their neighborhood.
Unlike the sprawling expanse of Central Park, Septuagesimo Uno embraces its small scale, creating a sense of intimacy and seclusion. It’s designed to be a contemplative space, nestled gracefully between historic brownstones and apartment buildings. The park is characterized by its thoughtful landscaping, featuring a mix of trees, shrubs, and seasonal plantings that bring color and life to the urban environment. Its modest size is precisely its strength, fostering a quietude that can be hard to find in larger, more active parks.
For those in the know, Septuagesimo Uno is a beloved spot for a quick break, a moment of reflection, or simply to enjoy a cup of coffee on a sunny day. It embodies the concept of a true neighborhood park – accessible, welcoming, and perfectly scaled for local use. It's a testament to New York City's commitment to integrating green spaces, no matter how small, into its dense urban fabric, enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
Septuagesimo Uno is idyllically situated on the Upper West Side, specifically at the intersection of W. 71st Street and West End Avenue, New York, NY 10023, USA. This location is a prime spot within one of Manhattan's most desirable residential neighborhoods, making it easily accessible for locals and those exploring the area.
The park's precise coordinates place it conveniently for public transportation. While not directly adjacent to a major subway hub, several subway lines are within a reasonable walking distance, allowing for easy access from various parts of Manhattan and other boroughs. The 1, 2, and 3 subway lines have stations at 72nd Street and Broadway, just a few blocks east of the park. These express and local trains provide quick connections south to Midtown, downtown, and north to other Upper West Side and Harlem neighborhoods.
Additionally, numerous bus routes traverse Broadway, Amsterdam Avenue, and Columbus Avenue, all within a short walk of West End Avenue. This extensive bus network provides further accessibility for those who prefer surface transit. The park's location on West End Avenue, known for its elegant residential buildings and tree-lined streets, makes for a pleasant stroll to and from the park. Its embeddedness within a residential area also means it is a safe and welcoming space for neighborhood residents seeking a moment of peace.
As a small, intimate pocket park, Septuagesimo Uno provides essential, rather than extensive, "services" that are characteristic of urban green spaces. Its primary function is to offer a peaceful, publicly accessible outdoor environment for relaxation and enjoyment.

Quiet Urban Retreat: Its design and location between brownstones create a relatively quiet and secluded atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for reading, reflection, or a peaceful conversation, away from the noisier thoroughfares.
Public Access: Septuagesimo Uno is a publicly accessible park, meaning it is open to all members of the community during designated park hours, providing a free amenity for local residents.
It is important to note that, as a pocket park, it does not offer facilities such as restrooms, playgrounds, or extensive recreational fields. Its charm lies in its simplicity and its dedication to providing a tranquil, green seating area.
Intimate Pocket Park Design: Its small, thoughtful design is a significant feature, creating a cozy and secluded atmosphere that sets it apart from larger, more active parks.
Architectural Integration: The park is seamlessly integrated into the historic Upper West Side streetscape, nestled between elegant brownstones and residential buildings, enhancing its charm.

Strategic UWS Location: Positioned conveniently on West 71st Street near West End Avenue, it's easily accessible to residents and those exploring the Upper West Side.
As a public park managed by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, Septuagesimo Uno does not offer "promotions" or "special offers" in the commercial sense. Access to the park is free for all members of the public during its operating hours. Its "offer" is the inherent value of a free, peaceful, and beautiful green space in a dense urban environment.
Any "special events" or community-led activities would be organized by local neighborhood groups in conjunction with the Parks Department, rather than originating as commercial promotions from the park itself. New Yorkers can simply enjoy the serene environment and the amenities it provides without any cost. For information regarding park rules, hours, or any potential community-organized events, consulting the NYC Parks website or local Upper West Side community boards would be the best approach.
For general inquiries about Septuagesimo Uno, or for information regarding New York City parks in general, the best contact is the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. While there isn't a direct phone line for such a small pocket park, the main departmental contacts would be relevant.

Septuagesimo Uno Reviews
Cute park with a couple of benches between brownstones.
Feb 01, 2025 · Kai YenCool place to visit in the heart of the Upper West Side. Definitely check it out if you are in the area.
Oct 12, 2021 · Benjamin SommerA great place for a long time until ruined by teenagers who smoke, vape, and leave their paraphernalias all over the place. Those kids make the park look like the Tenderloin. It sometimes smells like a bathroom. But the park has its good days, especially after the Parks Dept clean it.
