511 Lexington Avenue at, E 48th St, New York, NY 10017, USA

4.0
I was traveling on business and had great expectations given the positive four star reviews. The lobby was remodeled and looked decent, however I was very disappointed in the quality of the rooms. I will say it did feel like a typical new york apartment, but not remotely luxurious. The room was small, but that’s to be expected. Upon walking in, it smelled like mildew. It looked like a really low effort renovation. The elevators mechanical noises were loud and would have made it near impossible to sleep if it weren’t for my noise canceling earphones.Service and Location were completely fine. - Aaron Lee

The Lexington Hotel, Autograph Collection Introduce

When considering a hotel stay in the heart of New York City, particularly for those looking to be at the nexus of business, culture, and iconic landmarks, The Lexington Hotel, Autograph Collection, presents itself as a notable option. Situated in the vibrant Midtown East neighborhood, this historic hotel has long been a part of the city's hospitality landscape, known for its classic facade and a prime address that places guests right in the thick of Manhattan's energy.

As part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, The Lexington Hotel aims to offer a unique and independent hotel experience, distinct from typical chain properties, while still benefiting from the Marriott loyalty program. For New Yorkers looking for a convenient staycation or visitors eager to experience the city's pulse, its location often makes it a practical choice. While its lobby has seen recent renovations, aiming for a refreshed appeal, recent customer feedback suggests that the guest experience can be varied, with some areas indicating room for improvement in living spaces and service consistency. As one business traveler noted, "The lobby was remodeled and looked decent, however I was very disappointed in the quality of the rooms. I will say it did feel like a typical new york apartment, but not remotely luxurious. The room was small, but that’s to be expected. Upon walking in, it smelled like mildew. It looked like a really low effort renovation." These insights provide a balanced perspective, acknowledging the hotel's strong location and updated public spaces, while also addressing areas highlighted by guests regarding room comfort and amenities.

The Lexington Hotel, Autograph Collection, boasts an undeniably excellent location in Midtown East, New York City, at 511 Lexington Avenue at E 48th St, New York, NY 10017, USA. This address places it in one of Manhattan's most dynamic and accessible neighborhoods, making it a highly desirable spot for both business and leisure travelers.

For New Yorkers and visitors alike, the hotel's accessibility is a significant advantage. It is just a few blocks away from Grand Central Terminal, a major transportation hub offering connections to the Metro-North Railroad, multiple subway lines (4, 5, 6, 7, S), and various bus routes. This proximity means seamless travel to virtually any part of Manhattan, the outer boroughs, and even the greater New York metropolitan area.

Subway stations within a very short walk include 51st Street (6 train) and Lexington Avenue-53rd Street (E, M trains), providing direct access to destinations like the Theater District, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, and the financial district. Bus stops are abundant right on Lexington Avenue and nearby cross streets, offering convenient surface transportation options. For those arriving from out of town, the hotel's location is also relatively convenient for airport transfers, with express buses and train services connecting to JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty International Airports via Grand Central or nearby transit points. The hotel's "Location completely fine" according to one reviewer, highlighting its practical placement for exploring the city on foot or via public transport. The vibrant surroundings mean guests are never far from dining, shopping, and entertainment options.

The Lexington Hotel, Autograph Collection, offers a range of services designed to cater to the needs of its guests, from business travelers to tourists.

  • 24-Hour Front Desk and Concierge Services: Providing assistance with check-in/check-out, local recommendations, transportation, and general inquiries around the clock.

  • Fitness Center: A facility for guests to maintain their workout routines during their stay.

  • Meeting and Event Spaces: Equipped to host business meetings, conferences, and social events, catering to corporate clients.

  • On-site Dining Options: The hotel typically features a restaurant or lounge where guests can enjoy meals and beverages. Information about specific current offerings should be checked directly with the hotel.

  • Luggage Storage: Available for guests to store their bags before check-in or after check-out. It is important to note, however, that recent customer feedback indicates a policy of a "dollar per bag to store your items with the bellman, payable only in cash," though status may exempt guests. This policy has been described as "off-putting" by some.

  • Guest Wi-Fi: Standard internet access is typically available for guests.

  • Accessibility Features: The hotel is generally equipped with features to ensure accessibility for guests with disabilities.

The Lexington Hotel, Autograph Collection, boasts several features and highlights that define its character and appeal, particularly given its history and location in Midtown East.

  • Prime Midtown East Location: This is arguably the hotel's strongest feature. Its address places guests within easy walking distance of major attractions like Grand Central Terminal, Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick's Cathedral, the United Nations Headquarters, and Fifth Avenue shopping. Its central location also makes it ideal for business travelers with meetings in Midtown. As one reviewer confirmed, "Service and Location were completely fine."

  • Historic Art Deco Architecture: The hotel is housed in a classic Art Deco building from the 1920s, which contributes to its unique charm and character. While some recent renovations have aimed to update the interior, the architectural heritage is a significant part of its identity. The renovated lobby was noted as "decent" by a recent guest.

  • Autograph Collection Brand: As part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, the hotel aims to offer a distinct, boutique experience with individualized character, differentiating itself from more standardized hotel brands. This can appeal to travelers seeking a unique stay.

  • Proximity to Major Transportation Hubs: Its closeness to Grand Central Terminal means guests have unparalleled access to subway lines, commuter rail, and bus routes, making navigating the city incredibly convenient.

However, it is important for prospective guests to be aware of certain aspects highlighted by recent customer reviews:

  • Room Quality Concerns: Reviews mention rooms that felt "small," "cramped and uncomfortable," with a "smell like mildew" and appearing to have a "low effort renovation." Issues with "barely functional" showers and loud "air conditioning unit" were also cited.

  • Limited In-Room Amenities: Guests reported "almost nonexistent" in-room amenities, including a lack of Q-tips, shower caps, and refrigerators, which is below expectations for a hotel of this caliber.

  • Service Consistency: Some guests found the staff to appear "exhausted and disengaged," noting a lack of customary welcomes or proactivity regarding elite status benefits, resulting in a "dismal than welcoming" atmosphere.

As a major hotel property, The Lexington Hotel, Autograph Collection, participates in the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program. This offers various promotions and special offers to members, which can include:

  • Member Rates: Marriott Bonvoy members typically receive exclusive lower rates when booking directly.

  • Points Earning: Members earn Marriott Bonvoy points on eligible stays, which can be redeemed for free nights, experiences, or transferred to airline miles.

  • Elite Status Benefits: Guests with Marriott Bonvoy Elite status (Silver, Gold, Platinum, Titanium, Ambassador) may be eligible for benefits such as complimentary room upgrades (subject to availability), late check-out, bonus points, and lounge access (if applicable). However, recent reviews indicate that "status means little here, as we were told none were available, nor did anyone seem inclined to look," suggesting that these benefits may not always be consistently honored.

  • Seasonal Promotions: Marriott frequently runs global and regional promotions, such as bonus points offers, discounted stays, or package deals, which would apply to stays at The Lexington Hotel.

  • Packages: The hotel may offer specific packages that combine accommodation with experiences like dining credits, attraction tickets, or spa treatments.

Prospective guests, especially Marriott Bonvoy members, are advised to check the official Marriott website or The Lexington Hotel's dedicated page for the most current and specific promotions available at the time of booking. It's also prudent to manage expectations regarding elite benefits, as some recent feedback suggests these may not always be fully realized.

For New Yorkers, The Lexington Hotel, Autograph Collection, presents a compelling option primarily due to its exceptional location in Midtown East. Whether planning a staycation, hosting out-of-town guests, or needing a convenient base for business within Manhattan, its proximity to Grand Central Terminal and major corporate offices is a significant advantage. This allows for unparalleled ease of access to the city's myriad attractions, from Broadway shows to world-class museums and shopping districts, without extensive travel. The hotel's historic Art Deco charm, evident in its renovated lobby, also offers a distinctly New York experience.

However, locals considering this hotel should weigh its prime location against recent guest feedback regarding room comfort, in-room amenities, and service consistency. While its address is a major draw, managing expectations regarding the "luxury" aspect of the rooms and certain service protocols (like the baggage storage fee) is advisable. For those prioritizing an unbeatable Midtown East location and a historic New York ambiance, and who are prepared for a potentially "typical New York apartment" sized room experience with a focus on functionality over lavish amenities, The Lexington Hotel could still serve as a practical and well-situated choice for exploring the city. It offers a convenient base from which to immerse oneself in the quintessential New York experience, right at the heart of the action.
