Great Piece Meadows Introduce
For those of us living in New Jersey, the desire to connect with nature and find serene outdoor spaces is a constant pursuit. While our state is known for its bustling urban centers and vibrant shore towns, it also harbors hidden gems of natural beauty. One such treasure is Great Piece Meadows, a remarkable natural area located right here in Fairfield. It’s not your typical amusement park or historical landmark, but rather a sprawling expanse of wetlands, forests, and waterways that offers a truly immersive experience in the Garden State's wild side. This extensive preserve invites locals to explore its diverse ecosystems, engage in outdoor activities, and discover the abundant wildlife that thrives within its boundaries.
A "tourist attraction" often conjures images of crowded sites, but Great Piece Meadows redefines this term for the nature enthusiast. It stands as a significant wildlife management area (WMA), providing crucial habitat for a vast array of species and offering unparalleled opportunities for outdoor recreation. For New Jersey residents, this means having a vast natural playground in their backyard, a place where they can escape the everyday without traveling far. Whether you're an avid hiker, a keen kayaker, a birdwatching enthusiast, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Great Piece Meadows offers a dynamic and ever-changing landscape to explore. Its primary allure lies in its authentic natural state, providing a genuine connection to the wild heart of New Jersey and serving as a vital resource for both conservation and public enjoyment.
Great Piece Meadows is primarily located in Fairfield, NJ 07004, USA, although its extensive reach also extends into parts of Lincoln Park, Montville, and Wayne. This vast wildlife management area spans across portions of Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties, underscoring its significant ecological footprint in northern New Jersey.
Accessibility to Great Piece Meadows is a key advantage for New Jersey residents. While it covers a large geographical area, there are multiple well-known access points that facilitate entry. Customer reviews specifically mention access points like "2 Camp Lane in Fairfield" and "104 Hook Mountain Rd." These points often provide direct access to trails and river launches.
Fairfield is strategically located with excellent connections to major roadways. U.S. Route 46, Interstate 80, and New Jersey Route 23 are all within relatively close proximity, making it straightforward for visitors from various parts of northern and central New Jersey to reach the preserve. This ease of access ensures that a substantial natural escape is never too far away. While some access points might be less developed than others, as noted in a review, the fact that "multiple access points" exist and some trails are "well maintained" indicates a commitment to public access. This convenience allows New Jersey locals to easily plan hiking, kayaking, or photography excursions without the need for extensive travel, maximizing their time spent enjoying nature.
Great Piece Meadows, as a Wildlife Management Area (WMA) managed by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish and Wildlife, offers a range of services primarily focused on outdoor recreation, conservation, and public access to natural resources. These services include:

- Wildlife Viewing and Birdwatching: The diverse wetland and forest habitats are ideal for observing a wide array of wildlife, including various bird species, making it a prime location for birdwatchers and nature photographers.

- Natural Preservation: The fundamental service is the ongoing preservation and management of the vast wetlands and forests, crucial for flood control, water quality, and biodiversity in the Passaic River basin.
Great Piece Meadows boasts several prominent features and highlights that make it a compelling destination for New Jersey's nature enthusiasts:
- Extensive Wetland Ecosystem: A defining feature is its vast expanse of wetlands, including swamps, marshes, and floodplains, which are critical for regional ecology and biodiversity. This creates a unique landscape, especially during different seasons.
- Passaic River Access: Direct access to the Passaic River is a major highlight, allowing for popular activities like kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. This river connection provides a vital waterway for exploration.
- Diverse Wildlife Habitat: The varied habitats support a rich array of wildlife, including numerous bird species (making it a hotspot for birdwatching), amphibians, reptiles, and mammals, offering excellent opportunities for nature observation.

- Photographic Opportunities: The scenic beauty of the wetlands, river, and forests, particularly during different seasons, offers ample opportunities for nature photography.
- Significant Conservation Area: As one of the largest undeveloped tracts in the Passaic River basin, it plays a critical role in flood mitigation and water quality protection, making it an ecologically significant area.
- Undeveloped and Natural Feel: Unlike manicured parks, Great Piece Meadows retains a wild, untamed feel, which is a major draw for those seeking a true wilderness experience within the state.
As a Wildlife Management Area (WMA) managed by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Division of Fish and Wildlife, Great Piece Meadows does not offer commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the retail sense. Access to the area for general recreational activities like hiking, kayaking, and wildlife viewing is typically free and open to the public.
However, "special offers" might refer to public programs, regulatory changes, or informational resources that enhance the visitor experience or promote engagement with the WMA. These could include:
- Free Fishing Days: Periodically, the NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife designates "Free Fishing Days" where a fishing license is not required, allowing more people to try fishing in areas like Great Piece Meadows.
- Educational Workshops/Events: The NJDEP or local conservation groups might offer free or low-cost workshops on birdwatching, wildlife identification, or outdoor skills that could take place in or focus on WMAs.
- Hunting/Fishing License Information: While not a "promotion," information on licenses and permits for regulated activities is readily available, allowing those interested to legally participate.
- Trail Maps & Information: The "offer" of detailed, free maps and informational brochures (often available online or at kiosks) helps visitors navigate and appreciate the preserve.

Great Piece Meadows Reviews
Went here to take photos and hike during the winter. It is very nice even at this time of year and I found a few trails and hiked. There were multiple access points that I entered through, some did have better trails then others but they were all well maintained. Easy river access, so planning to come back and kayak in the spring.
Jan 01, 2025 · Henry EddyThis is a great kayaking spot. You can launch from 2 Camp Lane in Fairfield, and I have tried to add that spot to google maps. You can also launch from 104 Hook Mountain Rd.
May 11, 2025 · Sarah RiggsAs per some of the other reviews, there's no real/marked hiking trails here, just an old shooting range behind a children's playground and a big area of mixed swamp, trees & overgrown brush. If you want a walk, take a short drive to the Pyramid mountain parking lot & visit Bear Rock & Tripod Rock.
