For those of us living in and around New York, the desire to escape the urban buzz and immerse ourselves in nature is a common one. Fortunately, Long Island is home to some truly remarkable natural treasures, and Heckscher State Park in East Islip stands out as a prime example. This expansive state park, nestled along the serene Great South Bay, offers a refreshing retreat for individuals, families, and groups seeking a wide array of outdoor activities and a genuine connection with the natural world. Known for its picturesque landscapes, abundant wildlife, and diverse recreational opportunities, Heckscher State Park has earned its reputation as a beloved local gem, a place where you can truly unwind and recharge without venturing far from home.
Heckscher State Park spans over 1,600 acres, a vast expanse of woodlands, open fields, and picturesque bayfront. Its history dates back to the early 20th century when it was acquired by the State of New York, thanks in part to a significant donation from philanthropist August Heckscher. This acquisition was a pivotal moment in ensuring public access to Long Island’s stunning natural coastline, and the park has since evolved into a well-maintained and highly utilized recreational area. Visitors frequently praise its clean environment, peaceful atmosphere, and the sheer variety of activities available, making it a perfect destination for a relaxing day outdoors or an adventurous weekend getaway.
Heckscher State Park is conveniently situated at 1 Heckscher State Parkway, East Islip, NY 11730, USA. Its location on the south shore of Long Island, within Suffolk County, makes it easily reachable for residents across the tri-state area. The park sits at the southern terminus of the Heckscher State Parkway, providing direct and straightforward access for drivers. This parkway connects seamlessly with other major Long Island thoroughfares, including the Southern State Parkway, ensuring a smooth journey from various points on Long Island, as well as from New York City and its northern suburbs.
Upon arrival, visitors will find ample parking spread across different fields within the park, typically accommodating a large number of vehicles, even on busier days. While there is a vehicle use fee during peak seasons and certain hours, the ease of access and the extensive parking facilities contribute significantly to the park's appeal. Its proximity to towns like Islip, Great River, and Bay Shore means that a refreshing natural escape is just a short drive away for countless Long Islanders, making spontaneous trips to the park a real possibility.

Historic Significance: The park’s origins are tied to a significant effort to preserve public access to Long Island’s waterfront, a testament to the vision of early conservationists like August Heckscher and Robert Moses.
While Heckscher State Park doesn't typically offer flash promotions like retail businesses, there are several ways locals can make the most of their visits and manage costs. The most common "offer" is the New York State Parks Empire Pass, which provides unlimited day-use vehicle entry to most New York State Parks and facilities for an annual fee. This pass is an excellent investment for frequent visitors, as it quickly pays for itself, especially considering the per-car entry fees at Heckscher State Park ($8-$10 per car during various seasons and times). Additionally, specific events, which are often listed on the New York State Parks website or local community calendars, might have associated fees or special registration requirements. For those interested in camping or cottage rentals, it's advisable to check the ReserveAmerica website or contact the park directly for current rates, availability, and any potential off-peak discounts or seasonal packages.

May 31, 2025 · Alamin hossainGreat place to have a church picnic or family gathering. Shout out to One Hope Church family for introducing us to this gem. 😍
May 26, 2025 · E GQuiet, small beach near playground, bathroom & close parking ($10 access fee unless you get $80 Empire Pass, which gives you unlimited entry and parking to all NY State parks). The swimming areas are a bit limited, but the set up of the beach makes it great for watching children - great sand for building. There's also park trails, etc. and all the typical state park amenities.
Jul 04, 2024 · LisaRoxanne WaltersBeautiful state park right on the water. The park has a small entrance fee, but if you’re there for the day it is more than worth it. There are several different beach areas and today we had it almost to ourselves, with very few people on the beach. On the east side of the park are cottages for rent but we did not see inside them so have no clue on the condition of the cabins. To the north end of the park, is a heavily wooded campground area, but we did not go inside there today. The park is quite large with many different camping, picnic and beach areas for someone to choose from as well as a boat launch area. It was a great day today to enjoy this peaceful park away from the noise of the city. We even saw this baby osprey, who was screaming at the top of her lungs for her mom and dad to come feed her.
Sep 11, 2024 · Thomas BVery clean well maintained State park. Surprisingly few visitors at the park today in spite of the perfect weather. But I guess that will change with Memorial Day and the beach opening.Only one suggestion many picnic tables look like they have tree bark like fungus growing on them. Maybe they could be sanded down and stained or treated to prevent regrowth.
