4.0
Great part of NYC, and on a Sunday morning it was quite peaceful jogging along the waterfront and near Castle Clinton. Very lovely park, but as others have mentioned the south end is blocked off for construction.Plenty to do and eat, one of the best areas of the city to visit imo. Recommended. - FFKDTP1

The Battery Introduce

New York City is a vibrant tapestry of sights and sounds, a constant hum of energy that defines the metropolitan experience. Amidst this exhilarating chaos, finding a tranquil retreat can feel like discovering a hidden treasure. For locals and visitors alike, The Battery, formerly known as Battery Park, stands as just such a gem – a sprawling 25-acre public park at the very southern tip of Manhattan Island. It’s more than just a park; it's a historical landmark, a recreational hub, and a gateway to some of the city's most iconic views and destinations. Whether you're seeking a peaceful stroll, a dose of history, or a fun outing with the family, The Battery offers a diverse and enriching experience right in the heart of Lower Manhattan.

From its strategic beginnings as a defensive point for the nascent New Amsterdam settlement, The Battery has evolved over centuries into a cherished green space. It’s a place where the city's past and present seamlessly merge, where the whispers of history mingle with the laughter of children and the gentle lapping of waves against the shore. The park's carefully cultivated gardens, scenic walking paths, and breathtaking waterfront promenade offer a refreshing escape from the urban grind. It’s a testament to urban planning that a space so central to New York City’s bustling financial district can simultaneously provide such a profound sense of calm and natural beauty. The Battery truly embodies the spirit of a world-class city that embraces both its historical roots and its natural landscapes.

Location and Accessibility

The Battery is exceptionally well-located at the southernmost tip of Manhattan, making it a highly accessible destination for anyone in New York City. It is bordered by Battery Place to the north, State Street to the east, the expansive New York Harbor to the south, and the scenic Hudson River to the west. This prime waterfront position grants the park unparalleled views and breezes, especially welcome during the warmer months.

Getting to The Battery is straightforward, thanks to New York City's extensive public transportation network. For those utilizing the subway, the South Ferry/Whitehall Street station (1, R, W lines) provides direct access. The Bowling Green station (4, 5 lines) is also a short walk away. Several bus lines, including the M5, M15 SBS, and M20, have stops conveniently located near the park. For those arriving via the Staten Island Ferry, Whitehall Terminal is practically at The Battery's doorstep, offering a free and scenic ride across the harbor before you even step foot in the park. While street parking can be challenging in Lower Manhattan, there are various parking garages in the vicinity for those who prefer to drive. The park’s central location in Lower Manhattan also means it's within walking distance of many other significant downtown attractions, making it an ideal starting point or a peaceful interlude in a day of exploring.
