STUDIOPLUS - JGSTAY Introduce
For anyone seeking short-term accommodation in the vibrant heart of New York City, understanding the nuances of different lodging options is crucial. STUDIOPLUS - JGSTAY, located at 38 W 31st St, New York, NY 10001, USA, appears to operate as a provider of apartment-style or studio accommodations, likely catering to travelers looking for an alternative to traditional hotels. Given its address, it occupies a prime spot in Midtown Manhattan, offering immediate access to some of the city’s most iconic attractions and transportation hubs. However, based on available public feedback, it's important for potential guests to approach this option with a clear understanding of what to expect from their stay.
The concept of apartment buildings offering short-term stays, often managed by entities like JGSTAY, has become increasingly popular in New York City. These types of accommodations can appeal to guests seeking more space, a kitchen, or a more "local" living experience compared to a standard hotel room. Located in a bustling area, STUDIOPLUS - JGSTAY aims to leverage its excellent geographical position to attract visitors to the city. Its presence signifies the growing demand for flexible lodging solutions in high-traffic tourist and business districts.
However, it is imperative for potential guests to be aware of the experiences shared by previous customers. Reviews consistently highlight significant concerns regarding room conditions, cleanliness, maintenance, and staff responsiveness. Phrases such as "absolutely terrible," "extremely small," "filthy and unpleasant," "suffocating mildew smell," "stained yellow pillows," and "black mold in the bathtub" appear frequently. There are also reports of broken fixtures, lack of basic supplies like toilet paper and trash bags, and difficulties in reaching staff, with "reception area office" often being "dark" or having "a post it note taped on the door with a phone number for you to call" that goes unanswered. These detailed accounts suggest that while the location is undeniably convenient, the operational standards and guest experience at STUDIOPLOPLUS - JGSTAY might not meet the expectations of many travelers.
The location of STUDIOPLUS - JGSTAY at 38 W 31st St, New York, NY 10001, USA, is arguably its most significant asset. This address places it squarely in Midtown Manhattan, a highly desirable and strategically important area for anyone visiting New York City.
For those arriving by air, the property is well-connected to all major New York City airports: Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). Travelers can easily access the AirTrain and subway/train connections to Penn Station, which is just a short walk from 38 W 31st Street. This convenience significantly reduces travel time upon arrival and departure.
The immediate vicinity of 38 W 31st Street offers unparalleled access to major transportation hubs. Penn Station, a nexus for Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), and New Jersey Transit, is only a block away. This proximity is a huge advantage for commuters and inter-city travelers. The Port Authority Bus Terminal, serving regional and national bus lines, is also within a comfortable walking distance.
Furthermore, the location provides excellent access to numerous subway lines. The 1, 2, 3, A, C, and E subway lines are all accessible within a few blocks, allowing for swift and direct travel to nearly every corner of Manhattan and beyond. This connectivity is invaluable for exploring New York City's diverse neighborhoods and attractions.
In terms of proximity to attractions, guests are within walking distance of iconic landmarks such as the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, Herald Square (home to Macy's flagship store), and Koreatown, known for its vibrant dining scene. This central and highly accessible location means guests can spend less time commuting and more time experiencing the energy of New York City, which is a major draw for any accommodation in Manhattan.
Services Offered:
- Short-term accommodation in apartment/studio-style units.
- Self-check-in options (implied by lack of consistent staff presence).
- Bedding and basic towels provided (though quantity and cleanliness are noted issues).
Features / Highlights:
- Prime Midtown Manhattan Location: This is by far the most significant highlight. Situated at 38 W 31st St, the property offers unparalleled access to Penn Station, Moynihan Train Hall, Madison Square Garden, the Empire State Building, Herald Square, and numerous subway lines. This central location makes it incredibly convenient for exploring New York City's major attractions and transportation hubs.
- Apartment-Style Accommodation: Unlike a traditional hotel, STUDIOPLUS - JGSTAY appears to offer studio or apartment-style units. While details are limited, this typically implies more space and potentially kitchen facilities, which can be a draw for longer stays or guests who prefer to prepare some of their own meals.
- Self-Sufficiency Potential: For independent travelers who prefer minimal interaction with staff, the reported lack of consistent on-site presence might align with a preference for self-service or remote assistance.
Promotions or Special Offers:
Based on the nature of the provided information and customer reviews, STUDIOPLUS - JGSTAY does not appear to publicly advertise traditional "promotions or special offers" in the way a hotel might. The reviews suggest operational challenges rather than marketing incentives.
However, as a property that likely lists on online travel agencies (OTAs) such as Expedia (as mentioned in a review) or Booking.com, any potential "promotions" would typically be managed through these platforms. These might include:
- Seasonal discounts applied by the listing agent.
- Last-minute deals for unsold inventory.
- Discounts for longer stays (e.g., weekly or monthly rates, if offered).
- "Genius" or loyalty program discounts specific to the OTA.
Potential guests interested in staying at STUDIOPLUS - JGSTAY should search for listings on major online travel agencies and compare prices and terms there. It is crucial to read the most recent reviews on these platforms before booking, as any promotional pricing would need to be weighed against the reported conditions and service. There are no direct promotions from the property itself currently available in public data.

Conclusion: Why This Place is Suitable for Locals
For New Yorkers, understanding the landscape of short-term accommodations like STUDIOPLUS - JGSTAY is important, particularly when considering options for visiting friends and family or even for a local staycation. The property's location at 38 W 31st St is undeniably its strongest asset, offering unparalleled access to major transportation hubs like Penn Station and Moynihan Train Hall, as well as iconic Manhattan attractions. For guests whose primary concern is being centrally located with easy access to transit, this aspect of STUDIOPLUS - JGSTAY is appealing.
However, based on consistent and detailed public reviews, it is crucial for locals to be fully aware of the reported conditions. The recurring themes of "extremely small" rooms, "filthy and unpleasant" conditions including mold and stained pillows, "broken" fixtures, "suffocating mildew smell," and a significant lack of responsive staff for basic supplies and assistance, paint a concerning picture. While the allure of an apartment-style stay in a prime location might seem attractive, the widespread negative feedback regarding cleanliness, maintenance, and customer service suggests that the actual guest experience might fall far short of expectations. For locals considering this for themselves or recommending it to others, it would be wise to prioritize properties with established reputations for cleanliness, maintenance, and reliable guest support, even if it means sacrificing some of the convenience offered by this specific location. The reviews strongly indicate that the issues extend beyond minor inconveniences, suggesting that potential cost savings might not be worth the considerable drawbacks in comfort and service.

STUDIOPLUS - JGSTAY Reviews
The hotel’s location is convenient, but everything else...building, staff, and room conditions were absolutely terrible. We checked in the day before New Years Eve, only to find that the room looked nothing like what was advertised. It was extremely small, with barely enough space for the beds and nothing else. The only airflow came from a window without a screen. The room was filthy and unpleasant. The bathroom sink was cracked and we had to have someone fix the broken stopper so we could use the sink without it clogging. We had to beg for toilet paper and trash bags if and when we could actually find someone from our "reception" area in the office. I finally gave up and purchased enough supplies to last until we checked out. They provided one towel for each guest the day we checked in. No wash cloths or hand towels. I had to use the laundromat just to have clean towels for us to use during our stay. Most of the areas were simply unacceptable in terms of cleanliness and maintenance. Anytime we went to the “reception area office” it was dark or there was a post it note taped on the door with a phone number for you to call. When you call the number no one answers. You leave a message and no call back either. And don't think about asking the front desk for any assistance. They were rude and unhelpful. Very underwhelming experience.I strongly discourage anyone from staying at this property. We loved our time in New York with the exception of this place.
Jan 12, 2025 · T PeckThe hotel’s location is convenient, but everything else—building, staff, and room conditions—was absolutely terrible. We checked in on Christmas Eve, only to find that the room looked nothing like what was advertised. It was extremely small, with barely enough space for the beds, and had a suffocating mildew smell due to the lack of ventilation. The only airflow came from a window without a screen. The room was filthy and unpleasant. Pillows were stained yellow, the bathroom lacked a fan and had black mold in the bathtub, and several cabinets were broken. Many areas were simply unacceptable in terms of cleanliness and maintenance. After discovering these issues, I contacted Expedia to report the situation, and they reached out to the host. When I went to the “office” to follow up, it was dark, and it seemed like they were deliberately avoiding me.We ultimately left and booked a different hotel instead. I strongly discourage anyone from staying at this property.
Dec 29, 2024 · ray rayLocation is good. Sadly, we visited in winter and water run cold for half of our stay. Nothing like freezing 🥶 on the other hand, our check in time was at four, but our check out time was at eleven and they only storage our bags if we payed for it. The toilet seat was cracked smelly and fake leather fome, so we didn’t use it at all. Over all, it could be way better than it is. Location is good. But if you travel with a lot of luggage be prepared to not having space for it in the room.
May 03, 2023 · Nadia MavricI had the real New York experience. The pipes made noises all through the night. The room was tiny and everyone was on top of each other. The bathroom also tiny couldn’t even breath without touching the walls. The shower faucet popped off every-time we tried to turn it and we’d have to put it back to turn it. It even popped off in its own while in the middle of showering. There were roaches and bugs flying on our body as we tried to sleep. Key word tried because even in the dead of the night you heard the clacking of the pipes so loud we thought the building was going to explode. I honest didn’t have much hope for living conditions in New York and this place just topped the experience. Over all I had a good trip just couldn’t wait to get back to Houston. 1/10 only recommend if you want to have the typical New York experience. Don’t try the Grimaldi by this location. Worst pizza hands down.
Nov 16, 2022 · Nikita UzohSince the day we were there until we checked out nobody came to come and clean and also the place was too small it was very difficult for us to enter the bathroom because it was very small, what i was told and what i saw was different if not because there was no refundable we would have left i was very disappointed and don't think we come back or refer it to anyone thanks.
