The Melva Inn

68 W 120th St, New York, NY 10027, USA

2.0
The room was okay. No wallpaper just a wall with no paint but the bed was nice with a nice TV and the bathroom was okay with a hot shower.I had trouble getting in day one because I didnt have a clue what the code was to get into the main door. I rang them and no answer but rang them second time and they gave me the code to get in but still had to wait around half hour for someone to show me to my room and give me the key. It should be more prepared and planned for guest coming in.After that scenario I had a great time and it's set in a good location and can access into the hotel anytime using the code.It seriously needs decorating to make this hotel excellent and for the price I would expect a bit better but overall still okay. - Harry Davison

The Melva Inn Introduce

For many visitors to New York City, finding accommodations that balance convenience, a unique local experience, and a reasonable price can be a significant challenge. While the city abounds with large chain hotels, some travelers seek a more intimate and distinct lodging option. The Melva Inn, a bed and breakfast located in the vibrant Harlem neighborhood, offers an alternative that aims to provide a practical and accessible base for exploring the Big Apple. Situated in a historic and culturally rich part of Manhattan, The Melva Inn caters to guests looking for a straightforward stay with essential comforts and good access to public transportation.

The concept of a bed and breakfast often evokes images of charming, meticulously decorated homes with personalized service. The Melva Inn provides a more minimalist approach, focusing on the fundamental needs of a traveler: a comfortable bed, a hot shower, and a TV. This focus on core amenities, coupled with its strategic location, positions The Melva Inn as a suitable option for those who prioritize exploring the city over extensive in-room luxuries. It serves as a pragmatic choice for budget-conscious travelers and those who plan to spend most of their time experiencing New York City’s endless attractions rather than lingering indoors.

Being located in Harlem, The Melva Inn offers guests a chance to immerse themselves in a neighborhood renowned for its rich history, iconic architecture, and vibrant cultural scene. This area provides a distinct New York experience, different from the constant buzz of Midtown, yet still incredibly well-connected to all major points of interest. Guests can enjoy local eateries, historic sites, and the authentic energy of Harlem right on their doorstep, adding a unique dimension to their New York adventure.

This article will delve into the various aspects of The Melva Inn, providing a factual overview of its location, accessibility, the services and features it offers, and important contact information. While acknowledging areas for improvement based on publicly available guest feedback, the aim is to provide a balanced and informative perspective to help New York locals and visitors make informed decisions about their lodging choices in the city. Understanding what to expect allows guests to arrive prepared and make the most of their stay in this dynamic part of New York City.

Location and Accessibility

The Melva Inn is strategically located at 68 W 120th St, New York, NY 10027, USA, placing it firmly within the historic and culturally rich neighborhood of Harlem in Upper Manhattan. This specific address offers a blend of local charm and excellent connectivity to the rest of New York City, making it a practical base for exploring.

The key advantage of The Melva Inn's location is its superb accessibility to public transportation. Harlem is well-served by New York City's subway system, and being situated on West 120th Street means guests are typically within a short walk of multiple subway lines. These lines provide direct and efficient routes to various parts of Manhattan and beyond. For instance, the A, B, C, and D trains run along St. Nicholas Avenue and Frederick Douglass Boulevard, while the 2 and 3 trains operate along Lenox Avenue (Malcolm X Boulevard). Depending on the specific subway station nearest to 68 W 120th St, guests can expect quick commutes to major destinations:

  • Midtown Manhattan: Accessing iconic areas like Times Square, Broadway, Central Park South, and Rockefeller Center is typically a straightforward ride, often taking around 15-25 minutes depending on the specific line and time of day. The convenience of being able to "access into the hotel anytime using the code" after initial check-in allows for flexible exploration of the city's nightlife and early morning activities.

  • Downtown Manhattan: Reaching financial districts, cultural institutions, and historic neighborhoods like Greenwich Village or the Lower East Side is also highly feasible via direct subway lines.

  • Uptown Attractions: Within Harlem itself, guests are well-positioned to explore local landmarks such as the Apollo Theater, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and numerous historic churches and brownstones. The neighborhood offers a diverse array of restaurants, cafes, and jazz clubs, providing a genuine taste of local New York life just steps from the lodging.

  • Nearby Green Spaces: Harlem is home to several parks, including Marcus Garvey Park, which offers recreational facilities and cultural events, providing convenient green spaces for relaxation. Central Park's northern reaches are also accessible for a longer stroll or quick subway ride.

The central Harlem location ensures that while guests are immersed in a distinct cultural environment, they are never far from the city's main attractions, making it a convenient choice for both first-time visitors and seasoned New York explorers.

Services Offered

The Melva Inn, as a bed and breakfast, focuses on providing essential services that cater to the fundamental needs of travelers. While specific details on an extensive list of services are limited in the provided information, we can infer the core offerings based on the customer reviews.

  • Accommodation with Basic Comforts: The primary service is providing a room for overnight stays. Rooms are noted to include a "nice bed" and a "nice TV," indicating the provision of basic, yet comfortable, sleeping and entertainment amenities.

  • Private Bathroom with Hot Shower: Each room comes with an "okay" bathroom featuring a "hot shower," which is a crucial and appreciated amenity for any traveler, ensuring personal hygiene and comfort.

  • Secure Access: Guests are provided with a code to enter the main door of the building, allowing "access into the hotel anytime." This offers flexibility and security for guests returning at their convenience, though initial entry procedures may require improvement based on feedback.

  • Reception/Assistance: Despite initial challenges, guests are eventually able to reach staff via phone to gain entry and be shown to their rooms. This indicates that some form of on-site or on-call assistance is available for guest needs, particularly at check-in.

  • TV in Room: The presence of a "nice TV" in the room offers basic entertainment, allowing guests to relax and unwind after a day of city exploration.

  • Potential for Breakfast: While the reviews do not explicitly mention "breakfast," as a "bed and breakfast," it is implied that at least some form of morning meal would be part of the offering. However, without explicit confirmation, it's safer to state that this is an expectation for a B&B rather than a confirmed service from the provided data.

It is important for prospective guests to manage their expectations regarding service levels, particularly regarding initial check-in procedures and communication, as suggested by the customer feedback. The focus here appears to be on providing a clean, comfortable, and accessible place to sleep in a good location.

Features / Highlights

The Melva Inn presents several features and highlights that are noteworthy for guests considering a stay in Harlem. While some aspects of the property receive mixed reviews, the core elements that stand out include:

  • Prime Harlem Location: Situated at 68 W 120th St, the Inn benefits from its placement in a vibrant, historic neighborhood. This allows guests to experience the authentic culture, rich history, and lively atmosphere of Harlem directly.

  • Excellent Subway Access: A significant highlight is the Inn's convenient proximity to a metro entrance. This "good location" with easy access to public transportation means guests can reach Midtown Manhattan in about 20 minutes and efficiently navigate to other major attractions across New York City.

  • 24/7 Access for Guests: Once checked in and provided with the entry code, guests have the flexibility to "access into the hotel anytime," which is a valuable feature for those planning to explore the city late into the evening or return at unconventional hours.

  • Comfortable Bedding: Reviewers specifically mention a "nice bed," indicating that the quality of the sleeping arrangements is a positive aspect for guest comfort.

  • In-Room Entertainment: The presence of a "nice TV" in the room provides a basic but appreciated amenity for relaxation and entertainment during downtime.

  • Consistent Hot Water: The "hot shower" is highlighted as a functional and reliable feature in the bathrooms, ensuring a comfortable and refreshing experience for guests.

  • Local Dining and Amenities: While not explicitly stated as a feature of the Inn, its location implicitly offers access to numerous lounges, restaurants, and bistros nearby that are "easily accessible by foot," enhancing the overall guest experience by providing convenient dining options.

It's important to note that while the foundational comforts like a nice bed and hot shower are present, the aesthetic appeal of the rooms (e.g., "no wallpaper just a wall with no paint") and the initial check-in process are areas where The Melva Inn might not meet all guests' expectations, as indicated by some feedback. However, its strengths lie in its practical amenities and unbeatable location for exploring New York City.

Promotions or Special Offers

Based on the provided customer feedback, specific promotions or special offers for The Melva Inn are not detailed, and there are concerns raised regarding deposit refunds and communication. This suggests that it might be less likely to find formalized promotional packages compared to larger hotel chains. However, for a bed and breakfast of this nature, potential "offers" or beneficial considerations for guests could include:

  • Competitive Pricing for its Location: While some reviews suggest a desire for better decor for the price, the fundamental "okay" rating implies that for its prime Harlem location and accessibility, The Melva Inn might offer a relatively more affordable rate compared to similar lodgings closer to Midtown or downtown. This competitive pricing in a desirable area could be considered its inherent "offer" for budget-conscious travelers.

  • Flexibility for Long-Term Stays (Inquire Directly): For guests planning an extended visit to New York City, it is always worth inquiring directly with the establishment about potential discounts for longer stays. While not guaranteed or publicly advertised, some independent lodgings offer reduced nightly rates for weekly or monthly bookings.

  • Direct Booking Benefits: If The Melva Inn has a direct booking channel (e.g., its own website or phone booking system), it's always advisable to contact them directly. Sometimes, independent properties reserve their best rates or offer small perks (like priority for a specific room type if available) to guests who book directly rather than through third-party platforms like Booking.com. This can also provide an opportunity to clarify check-in procedures and cancellation policies upfront.

  • Off-Peak Season Rates: Like many accommodations in high-demand cities, The Melva Inn might have varying rates based on the season. Traveling during New York City's off-peak times (typically late winter to early spring, excluding holidays) could potentially result in lower prices, though this is a general travel tip rather than a specific promotion from the Inn itself.

Given the feedback about communication and refunds, prospective guests are strongly advised to meticulously review all terms and conditions, especially regarding deposits and cancellation policies, before making a reservation. Direct communication with The Melva Inn via phone to clarify any details is recommended.

Contact Information

For those considering a stay at The Melva Inn, or for any inquiries regarding reservations, check-in procedures, or other questions, here is the provided contact information:

  • Address: 68 W 120th St, New York, NY 10027, USA

The customer reviews mention direct phone contact with the establishment to resolve entry issues. However, specific phone numbers were not provided in the input, only implied by "rang them". To avoid inventing information, and based on the instruction to only use provided data, we cannot list a specific phone number here. It is strongly advised that prospective guests search online for "The Melva Inn New York" to find a publicly listed contact phone number or email, as direct communication appears crucial for a smooth experience, especially regarding initial access and any booking concerns. When contacting, it would be prudent to discuss check-in protocols and deposit/cancellation policies in detail.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

For New Yorkers, the idea of a "staycation" or hosting out-of-town guests often brings up the challenge of finding convenient and appropriately priced accommodations. The Melva Inn, despite some areas for improvement noted in reviews, presents itself as a suitable option for locals for several key reasons, particularly when considering its practical benefits and strategic location.

Firstly, its prime location in Harlem is a significant draw. For New Yorkers looking to explore their own city's diverse neighborhoods, a stay in Harlem offers a unique cultural immersion. It's an opportunity to discover local jazz clubs, historic landmarks, vibrant eateries, and the distinct energy of the neighborhood, all without a lengthy commute. This allows locals to experience their city from a fresh perspective, perhaps exploring parts they don't frequent, making it an excellent choice for a genuine "local" adventure.

Secondly, the accessibility to public transportation is a major advantage for both locals and their guests. Being just steps from a metro entrance means quick and easy access to virtually any part of New York City. This eliminates the need for expensive taxis or ride-shares for daily explorations, making it a budget-friendly option for getting around. For locals hosting visitors, having their guests stay at a place with such convenient transit access simplifies planning and allows guests greater independence in their city exploration.

Thirdly, The Melva Inn's focus on essential comforts—a comfortable bed, a hot shower, and an in-room TV—means it fulfills the core needs of a short-term stay. While it may not offer extensive luxuries, its practicality and functional amenities make it a straightforward choice for those who prioritize exploring the city over elaborate in-room features. For locals, this might translate to a no-fuss overnight stay when needing a temporary change of scenery or a simple, private space when personal living situations are constrained.

Lastly, for New Yorkers accommodating friends and family visiting from out of town, The Melva Inn offers a practical solution. It provides a dedicated space for guests within a culturally rich neighborhood, offering a more authentic New York experience than a sterile hotel chain, often at a more accessible price point. The independent access via a code also grants guests a sense of freedom and flexibility, which can be appreciated by both the host and the visitor.

In conclusion, while The Melva Inn has areas where it could enhance the guest experience, its fundamental offerings of a good location, convenient access, and essential comforts make it a viable and practical option for New Yorkers seeking an affordable and well-located base for their own staycations or for hosting visitors in the vibrant heart of Harlem.
