31 Street Broadway Hotel Introduce
For us New Yorkers, navigating the diverse landscape of accommodations in our city often comes down to balancing location, budget, and the kind of experience we're looking for. The 31 Street Broadway Hotel, situated at 38 W 31st St #110, New York, NY 10001, USA, positions itself in the very heart of Midtown Manhattan, a location that is undeniably one of its strongest assets. This hotel appears to cater to individuals and groups who prioritize being in the thick of the action and having easy access to everything New York City has to offer.
However, it is important to address customer feedback directly and factually. Recent reviews highlight significant concerns regarding customer service, management, and the handling of refundable deposits. One customer reported a "terrible experience" with "aggressive and hostile" staff concerning a booking cancellation and refund, stating they were ultimately "denied everything" by the property manager. Another detailed issues with a refused "$175 Damage Deposit" refund, despite website promises of it being "Refundable." This customer also noted a cold room with insufficient heating and shared washroom facilities for "50 rooms on the same floor." While these experiences are critical and require careful consideration, it is also noted that the hotel's "location is excellent, cleanliness was very good, and fire safety excellent (I used to be a fire inspector)." For those of us living in New York, understanding these contrasting points is key to determining if this hotel aligns with personal priorities, particularly if proximity and a functional base are paramount.
The address 38 W 31st St #110, New York, NY 10001, USA, places the 31 Street Broadway Hotel in an incredibly central and highly sought-after area of Midtown Manhattan. This location is one of its strongest features, offering exceptional convenience and accessibility to virtually everything New York City has to offer for both locals and visitors.
Stepping out of the hotel, you are immediately immersed in the vibrant pulse of the city. The iconic Empire State Building is just a few blocks north, a very short walk of typically 5 to 10 minutes, offering breathtaking panoramic views. Herald Square, home to the flagship Macy's department store, is also incredibly close by, providing access to world-class shopping. Madison Square Garden, a major venue for sports and concerts, is within easy walking distance, usually less than 10 minutes away, making it highly convenient for attending events. Madison Square Park, a beautiful green oasis, is also just a short stroll away, offering a pleasant spot for relaxation amidst the urban bustle. The bustling Koreatown (K-Town) with its vibrant restaurants and shops is also right around the corner. The bright lights of Times Square and the heart of the Broadway Theatre District are easily reachable, either on foot or with a very quick subway ride.
The accessibility of this location via public transportation is unparalleled. The 31 Street Broadway Hotel is strategically situated near multiple major subway lines, ensuring seamless travel across the entire city. The 34th Street - Herald Square subway station, a significant interchange serving the B, D, F, M, N, Q, R, and W lines, is just a stone's throw away. This extensive network provides direct connections to nearly all parts of Manhattan, as well as Brooklyn and Queens. Furthermore, Penn Station, a critical hub for Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), and New Jersey Transit, is also within very easy walking distance. This makes arrivals and departures from outside Manhattan exceptionally smooth. For New Yorkers, this level of transit connectivity means effortless commutes, easy exploration of new neighborhoods, and convenient access to all the city's myriad attractions, truly highlighting the convenience of the 31 Street Broadway Hotel's location.
Based on common practices for hotels in such a central New York City location, particularly those with a focus on practicality and budget-friendliness, the 31 Street Broadway Hotel would typically offer a range of essential services to ensure a functional stay. However, it's crucial to acknowledge that customer reviews have raised significant concerns about the quality and delivery of some of these services. While the presence of certain amenities might be expected, the actual guest experience, particularly concerning customer service and financial transactions, has been flagged as problematic.
Assuming a baseline for hotels in this category, and considering direct customer feedback:
- Front Desk Service: A front desk would be available for check-in and check-out. However, as noted in reviews, interactions with front desk personnel can be "aggressive and hostile" and may lead to difficulties with inquiries or refunds.
- Booking Management: While the hotel handles bookings, customer feedback indicates issues with communication and accuracy regarding cancellations and refunds, with disputes arising over confirmed booking statuses.
- Room Access: Guests would be provided with room keys (though one review mentioned a dispute over the return of a key after check-out).
- Cleanliness: A positive point highlighted by a reviewer was that "cleanliness was very good." This suggests a commitment to maintaining hygienic common areas and rooms.
- Fire Safety: A reviewer, identifying as a former fire inspector, explicitly stated, "fire safety excellent." This is a significant positive highlight for guest security.
- Heating: While heating is an expected service, a direct review mentioned "my room was cold (no heating) and only one blanket provided." This indicates a potential issue with the functionality or provision of heating in rooms.
- Washroom Facilities: Rooms may feature "shared washroom" facilities, meaning washrooms are located on the floor and shared among "50 rooms" as per a review. This is a key detail for potential guests.
- Refundable Deposit Policy: The hotel's website reportedly states a "$175 'Refundable Deposit'," but customer reviews detail significant difficulty in obtaining refunds, with calls being met with "runaround" and unresponsiveness.
- Basic In-Room Amenities: Typically, rooms would include a bed, and potentially a TV. The lack of adequate blankets in one review suggests a minimalist approach to comfort items.
It is imperative for potential guests to consider these reported service delivery issues when evaluating their stay at 31 Street Broadway Hotel.
The 31 Street Broadway Hotel, located at 38 W 31st St #110, New York, NY 10001, USA, has specific features and highlights that are either inherent to its structure and location or have been directly noted by customer feedback. It's crucial to present these facts while also acknowledging the varying guest experiences.
- Exceptional Central Location: This is arguably the strongest and most consistently positive feature. Situated in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, the hotel offers unparalleled access to iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building, Macy's Herald Square, Madison Square Garden, and Broadway theaters. Its proximity to major subway lines and Penn Station makes navigating the city effortless.
- Very Good Cleanliness: A direct customer review positively noted that "cleanliness was very good." This indicates that the hotel maintains a high standard of hygiene in its facilities, which is a crucial aspect for any accommodation.
- Excellent Fire Safety: Another significant highlight, especially from the perspective of a former fire inspector, is that "fire safety excellent." This provides reassurance regarding guest security and compliance with essential safety regulations.
- Value Proposition for Location: For those prioritizing a central Manhattan location above all else and seeking a budget-friendly option, the hotel's placement offers access to major attractions and transit at a potentially lower price point than luxury hotels.
- Shared Washroom Facilities: This is a distinctive feature, as noted by a reviewer who stated that "50 rooms shared the same washroom" on their floor. This indicates a different style of accommodation than private en-suite bathrooms, which can be a highlight for budget travelers or a point of consideration for others.
- Basic Room Essentials: The hotel provides fundamental lodging; while one review noted a lack of heating and only one blanket, the core function of providing a bed and shelter in a prime location is met.
- Building Structure in Midtown: The hotel is housed within a multi-story building typical of the dense Midtown landscape, contributing to its urban character.
These highlights collectively paint a picture of a hotel that, despite its documented service challenges, offers a clean, safe, and incredibly well-located base for exploring New York City, particularly for those whose primary concern is accessibility to attractions and transit.
Information regarding specific, actively advertised promotions or special offers for 31 Street Broadway Hotel is not readily available in public data. However, for a hotel of this nature and in this high-demand New York City location, common practices for attracting guests, particularly those seeking value, might include:
- Competitive Pricing for Location: The primary "offer" often lies in providing a highly central Manhattan address at a more accessible price point compared to luxury or mid-range hotels in the immediate vicinity.
- Refundable Deposit (with documented issues): As per customer reviews, the website mentions a "$175 Refundable Deposit." While this is presented as a refundable term, it has been a source of significant negative customer feedback due to reported difficulties in processing refunds. Potential guests should be aware of these reported issues and consider them as part of their evaluation of any "offer" related to deposits.
- Potential for Off-Peak Season Rates: Like many accommodations in New York City, rates may fluctuate seasonally. Booking during less busy periods (e.g., late winter, early spring before major holidays) could potentially result in slightly lower prices, though this isn't a guaranteed "promotion."
- Last-Minute Deals: Some properties might offer reduced rates for very last-minute bookings if they have availability, but this is highly variable in a central NYC location.
Given the reported customer service issues, particularly concerning refunds and booking processes, it is highly advisable for any potential guest to thoroughly review all booking terms and conditions, and perhaps consider contacting the hotel directly via phone to confirm details regarding any deposits or cancellation policies before making a reservation. This proactive approach could help mitigate potential misunderstandings or issues.

For us New Yorkers, evaluating a place like the 31 Street Broadway Hotel requires a nuanced understanding, balancing its undeniable advantages with the significant concerns raised by past guests. Its suitability for locals primarily hinges on prioritizing an unparalleled location and extreme budget-consciousness, even in the face of reported service challenges.
The most compelling reason for a local to consider this hotel is its truly central address in Midtown Manhattan. If you need a hyper-convenient base for a very specific purpose – perhaps attending an event at Madison Square Garden, a Broadway show, or needing a crash pad after a late night in the city without the hassle of a long commute back home – its location at 38 W 31st St is exceptional. It’s ideal for hosting out-of-town guests who are solely focused on sightseeing and want to be right in the thick of it, particularly if they are budget-conscious travelers who prioritize being steps away from major subway lines (like the 34th Street - Herald Square hub) and iconic landmarks such as the Empire State Building and Macy's. The easy access to Penn Station is also a significant plus for anyone arriving from or departing to other parts of the region.
Furthermore, the reported "very good cleanliness" and "excellent fire safety" are crucial positive aspects that contribute to a fundamental level of comfort and security. For locals, these are non-negotiables, ensuring that at a basic level, the environment is safe and hygienic.
However, it is paramount for any local considering this hotel to be fully aware of the highly critical feedback regarding customer service, management responsiveness, and the handling of refundable deposits, as well as potential issues with room heating and shared washroom facilities. If your priority is a warm, attentive service experience, seamless financial transactions, or guaranteed private amenities, these reviews indicate that this hotel may not meet those expectations.
In conclusion, the 31 Street Broadway Hotel is most suitable for locals or their guests who place ultimate priority on a hyper-central, accessible Manhattan location and are prepared for a very basic, potentially challenging service experience, viewing the accommodation purely as a cost-effective place to sleep while maximizing time exploring the city's immediate surroundings.

31 Street Broadway Hotel Reviews
TL;DR: Terrible service, terrible management, even terrible people.Terrible experience. We were looking into cancellation policies with the virtual agent, but turns out Expedia had emailed them saying we wanted to cancel. So we called them up asking if our booking had been cancelled. The person on the other side (a woman) was very aggressive and hostile and said, and I paraphrase, I cannot answer your question I'm not your slave I'm tired of people calling me up about refunds and that our booking was canceled (we never even mentioned a refund). We were like you cannot cancel without confirmation, she said that she didn't touch the booking but the booking has been cancelled and she cannot do anything about it. When we escalated that to Expedia (so unhelpful btw), they got in touch with the property manager who denied everything. After spending 5-6 hours of our boring life on this issue, we decided to cut our losses and go someplace else.
May 22, 2025 · Tanisa SamaddarThey refused to refund the $175 "Damage Deposit" for my stay in October 2024. Their website states this is a "Refundable Deposit" but I called four times to see if I could get it back and got the runaround every time "It is too late", "the accounting office is closed". Finally the rude person I talked to hung up on me. If you check the other major booking sites, there are many complaints about not returning the "damage deposit" (people use "deposit" but they mean damage deposit). Their web site says the deposit is refundable but this was not on the booking site I used and I only saw it when I got my booking confirmation. My room was cold (no heating) and only one blanket provided so I slept with my clothes on. "Shared washroom" means on the floor I was on, 50 rooms shared the same washroom. I would never stay here again, even if it was free. December 14, 2024- with the tremendous help of Booking.com, I got my money back. The hotel claimed to Booking that I did not return the room key ( news to me, they are wrong). If you see they have processed the $175 US on your credit card statement, call your credit card company right away and tell them not to pay it.Positives about this place- location is excellent, cleanliness was very good, and fire safety excellent ( I used to be a fire inspector).
Dec 14, 2024 · Paul JacksonThis hotel is an absolute scam. They scammed a 1000$ out of me. I requested for refund multiple times. The manager claimed she didn't have enough reservation to refund my money. Absolutely not recommended. The behavior of the staff is terrible. The manager especially. She kept cutting my calls when we called for a refund saying she has a meeting. The staff is downright terrible.
Apr 20, 2025 · Puranjani DasThis place is a SCAM... I definitely don't recommend this place. Before booking I called to make sure the accepted cash deposits the manager Eliza confirmed they do accept cash. Once I arrived the security guard at the front desk said they don't take cash did let him know that we had already spoke with Eliza that said we could he then proceeded to call her and I have proof recording where he spoke with her and confirmed upon checking out we would be getting our deposit back. Once we checked out they didn't have money to give us the deposit back. The lady working the front desk then just told us we would have to call Eliza and see what she could do. This lady is so rude and unprofessional she said she didn't know when her employees cleaned the rooms and that the lady working the front desk couldn't leave her desk to check our room. She then told me I would have to wait for Monday after 12:30 to come pick up my money or for me to leave my Cashapp or Zelle so she could return refund. I told her I was going to call the police and she started getting rude and told me we were really not getting our money back then hung up the call and blocked my number. I have been calling the hotel and they say she isn't available and I need to call back when shes there. I have disputed my stay with Expedia they have been help and haven't been able to get in contact with Eliza. I would just STAY FAR AWAY from this business. I have also put a complaint in with the BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU. This place deserves 0 STARS.....
Mar 04, 2025 · Prisila MedinaIf you're going to pay for positive reviews, at least get them to write a different one each time. I sorted the reviews to see the most recent and 50+ reviews say:"A fascinating step back in time! The estate is beautifully maintained, and the Potomac views are stunning. The guided tour is a must!"
