Carlton Arms Hotel Introduce
New York City, a vibrant metropolis of endless possibilities, offers a myriad of accommodation options, from luxury high-rises to quaint boutique stays. For those seeking an authentic and uniquely New York experience without breaking the bank, the Carlton Arms Hotel stands out as a genuine hidden gem. Nestled in the heart of the Flatiron District, this hotel isn't just a place to sleep; it's a living art gallery, a testament to New York's enduring bohemian spirit, and a welcoming haven for travelers and locals alike.
The Carlton Arms Hotel has a rich and storied history, evolving from a turn-of-the-century working-class hotel into the distinctive establishment it is today. In the 1980s, facing a need for rejuvenation, the hotel's then-manager, Ed Ryan, began inviting local and international artists to transform its interiors. What started as an innovative idea blossomed into an ongoing artist-in-residence program, turning every wall, hallway, and room into a unique canvas. This creative endeavor has fostered an eclectic and ever-changing atmosphere, earning the hotel the affectionate moniker "Artbreak Hotel." It's a place where every corner tells a story, offering a truly immersive artistic experience that sets it apart from conventional hotels.
For New Yorkers, or those visiting who want to feel like a local, the Carlton Arms Hotel offers a refreshing alternative to standard hotel chains. It embodies a certain independent spirit that defines much of the city's charm. Its commitment to art and community provides a different kind of hospitality, one that values creativity and personal connection. Whether you're looking for a short-term stay, a unique spot for visiting friends or family, or simply curious to experience a slice of authentic NYC culture, the Carlton Arms provides an inviting and memorable option.

The Carlton Arms Hotel distinguishes itself with a unique set of features that contribute to its memorable character and appeal:
The "Artbreak Hotel" Concept: This is arguably the hotel's most defining feature. Every inch of the hotel, from the lobby and hallways to individual guest rooms, is adorned with original murals, paintings, and other artistic installations. These works are created by local and international artists participating in the hotel's ongoing artist-in-residence program, making the Carlton Arms a living, evolving art exhibition. Each room offers a different, often quirky and eccentric, artistic experience, making every stay a visually engaging one.
Affordable Rates: In a city known for its high accommodation costs, the Carlton Arms Hotel consistently offers some of the most budget-friendly rates in a prime Manhattan location. This makes it an attractive option for travelers who prioritize experience and location over luxury amenities, and a great value for locals looking for an affordable staycation or place for guests.
Friendly Lobby Cat: A truly beloved feature, the hotel's friendly resident cat in the lobby is a highlight for many guests, adding a warm, homely, and quirky touch to the overall experience. Petting the cat often provides a delightful and unexpected interaction.
Unique Room Diversity: The hotel offers a variety of room types, including options with shared bathrooms and private bathrooms. While some rooms are described as basic and small, they are generally clean, and the beds are noted for being comfortable. This diversity allows guests to choose an option that best fits their budget and comfort preferences, often providing a more authentic "New York apartment" feel.
Historical Charm: Housed in an old building from the 1860s, the Carlton Arms exudes historical charm. While this means some elements like tiny rooms and hallways are to be expected, it also contributes to the hotel's unique character and a sense of stepping back in time in a positive way. The building's history, including its past as a speakeasy and a single-room occupancy hotel, adds layers to its allure.
While the Carlton Arms Hotel is celebrated for its consistently affordable rates in a high-demand city, specific, ongoing promotions or special offers are not widely advertised directly on the hotel's independent channels in the way larger hotel chains might. Its core appeal lies in its inherent value and unique experience rather than fluctuating discount campaigns.
However, like many hotels, potential savings can often be found through the following avenues:
Online Travel Agencies (OTAs): Websites like Kayak, Priceline, Booking.com, and MakeMyTrip frequently feature deals and discounts for the Carlton Arms Hotel. These platforms often run their own promotions, and by comparing prices across multiple sites, you might find the best available rate for your desired dates.
Seasonal Bookings: Like most travel accommodations, rates for the Carlton Arms Hotel can vary based on demand and seasonality. Booking during off-peak times in New York City (typically January-February or parts of late summer) might yield slightly lower prices compared to peak tourist seasons.
Direct Booking Advantages: While not a promotional "offer" in the traditional sense, booking directly with the hotel via phone or their official (if available) website might occasionally provide access to the best available rates or specific room types not widely advertised elsewhere. It's always worth checking directly with the hotel for availability and pricing.
Given the hotel's budget-friendly nature, the primary "special offer" is often the excellent value it provides for its unique artistic experience and prime Manhattan location. It consistently aims to be an affordable option without the need for frequent, large-scale discounts. Guests seeking the best possible price are encouraged to compare rates across reputable booking platforms and consider their travel dates.

Carlton Arms Hotel Reviews
Decent rooms but definition of basic. Very cheap rates and there isn't a security deposit which is very handy. Heating was on in the entire building and the room we got was literally a sauna when we entered. Almost couldn't breathe.Cat in lobby is cute. Location is convenient but a 30-40 minute walk from port authority if you're visiting. Staff are friendly. Shared bathroom we used was well kept. Old building from 1860 or something so prepare yourself for the tiny rooms and hallways. Overall, a good budget place to stay.
Apr 08, 2025 · Pearse HillockIt's great for what it is, an affordable place to sleep in Flatiron. There are a lot of stairs. The rooms are very small and basic, but the beds are comfortable. Most rooms use shared bathrooms. There is street art on every wall, and there is an extremely friendly cat that hangs out in the lobby so you can pet him.
Apr 18, 2025 · Nathan StullerAbsolutely lovely hotel to stay at! All of the rooms in the hotel are individually painted by different artists, so you are sure to have a one of a kind, memorable experience. You get to choose your room to a certain degree, so you can pick the kind of vibe you are comfy with. The hotel is situated in the Kips Bay area, which is full of great sights, small parks and square, amazing food places and deli’s. Plus, it is very close to many touristy spots (we’re talking less than 20 minutes to get to the Empire State Building)The staff are super lovely and helpful. Depending on the time of year, you can even get a tour of the other rooms in the hotel. Highly recommend a stay here if you’re an open-minded, artsy individual
Feb 06, 2025 · Robertas SkipitisVery vintage! Has a cool vibe to the place. Every floor has a well defined theme. Rooms are great for the price you pay. It’s centrally located close to Madison square park. Has a water fountain and coffee in the lobby. Tidy rooms and good mattresses. No elevators. Friendly kitty in the lobby also adds to its charm!
Feb 20, 2025 · Rajeswari DasWould definitely recommend staying here when visiting NYC (Manhattan). Location is great and staff is very helpful (we asked for a different room because of the noisy street side, was no problem at all). Has a great artsy vibe, but could do with some maintenance and refreshing.
